I picked up a set of rears off an 87 4runner today and a set of rears off a 94 T-100... I was gonna pull a set off a Tacoma but they were the exact same pack as the T-100.

The rears off the 87' are 48" and the T-100's are 54"... i'm going to add the T-100 leafs as needed to stiffin the springs as neccessary because the leafs are much thicker.

Plan on taking them down to bare metal tomorrow and giving 'em a fresh coat of paint. Then i'll start assembling the pack...

So i'm trying to figure out where exactly I should put the T-100 leafs for stiffness.

Calling MINISIMP, I hear you have some expertise in this area?

I had originally planned on just using my 3 leaf stock rears and sandwiching them together with the 3 top leafs on the 87' pack. If I need the spring to be a bit more stiff (what if) then where's the best place to put the T-100 leafs?

The T-100's are only a two leaf pack w/ an overload so i've got two to work with... i'm sure i'll only need one though.. if that.

I would try this first. What I did was take the leafs with the most arc from both packs to make one pack. Then later removed one spring. It's trial and error.

How many leafs did you end up with total?  you running a 5 leaf pack?  because you've only got 3 on a stock rear to work with.

4 thin leafs, plus 1 thick short leaf (bottom leaf maybe?).

gotcha!

Here's what i'm working with, I snapped a few shots and took a few measurements. Looks like the stock rears have about 7 3/4" arch. I'm going to clean them up this weekend and cut a few down to size. The truck has stock rears on it now which is where i'll be getting the other pack from. Now i've gotta find some 63" Chevys for the rear.

I think i'm going to make mock up shackles w/ flat bar to figure out what size shackle i'll need to get the truck level then purchase 'em. Instead of just guessing and end up buying the wrong size.

I have some 63's if pick pull wants to much, not sure what they charge there but mine are cheaper   If you are around today I can bring them by on my way home from work since I will be passing your neighborhood anyways, I drove the rig to work today.

I also have some shackles you should try, they are offset and I ran them on mine at first then went shorter but these can be modified, make ya a deal  ;)

So couple questions. what kinda shackle angle should I be looking for in the front?

Also when you build the front pack do you layer *like* leafs together or just stack the two on top of each other just the way they are?

Example:

1. Main leaf w/ wrap
2. Main leaf off 2nd pack w/ wrap cut off
3. Middle leaf from pack
4. Middle leaf from 2nd pack
5. Bottom leaf from pack
6. Bottom leaf from 2nd pack

? ? ?

Or would you go

1. Main leaf w/ wrap
2. Middle leaf from pack
3. Bottom leaf from pack
4. Main leaf cut down from 2nd pack
5. Middle leaf from 2nd pack
6. Bottom leaf from 2nd pack

? ? ?

Definitely, intermix them so the leaf lengths progress from longest to shortest and try to keep the difference in length between leafs about the same throughout each pack as you build them. :yesnod:

ordered some parts for the rear springs today, gonna go hunt down some 63" Chevy's tomorrow.

only thing i'll need to buy after that is shocks, drivelines (once I put the duals in)  and a new set of tires... so far i've kept the cost down quite a bit. I'll tally everything up when it's all said and done.

rear shackle through the frame
http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=8233.0;attach=105872;image

how did you determine where to put the holes?  i'd imagine i'm going to have to tac/cut the shackle mounts a couple times to get the correct shackle angle.

AutoCAD.
I wanted to keep the same shackle angle so I put it in CAD to come up with the measurements.
From front spring eye to shackle eye (centers) it is 62.25" sitting on a 5.5" :turtle: shackle and a 5 leaf + 1 cut down overload leaf Chevy pack on pivot blocks.
If you need any other measurements for anything else let me know. Truck is sitting in the driveway.

Just read that entire page, very cool. If i'm not happy w/ the ride height and plan on going this direction I may be hitting you up for more questions Minisimp.

I'd imagine if you had them mounted on the frame in a certain spot and just rotated the shackle mounts up inside the frame you could put them in the same location and keep the same shackle angle you had before putting them through the frame.

I can't remember if the back of the frame's open or not, if it is i'd do what you did so I have more surface area to weld on.... otherwise if the frames boxed in i'd just do the same thing on the rear that i'd do w/ the front shackles.

Btw did that limit flex at all when you mounted the shackles in the frame?

I'm taking this from Minisimp's build, might do mine the same way. I'm not gonna cut anything first and adjust as needed.

Quote
Yes, each of my leaves is 6" shorter in overall length than the leaf above it. (3" each side)
1 - 48"
2 - 48" (wrapped leaf)
3 - 42"
4 - 36"
5 - 30"

Those are estimates, but should be pretty close to reality.

Chris i'm always around Thursday,Friday and Saturdays. Hit me up!

Btw do you know the guy out in Wheatland that has a primer/sanded 4Runner?  other than needing a paint job the 4runner's sick..i'm trying to get ahold of the guy so I can ask him some ?'s about his suspension setup.

I think you've got it right for the front combo but it would benefit you to see what you get with 63's on a family friendly rig. My buddy's 4runner is full bodied, has a full interior, front cage, and a swing out tire carrier w/ a 35 on it. Heavy. It's the price you pay when you're hauling kids and trying to stay street friendly.  He's also got a body lift and blocks. The body lift was put on to clear the 4.3 but the blocks are there because the 63's like to lay down under that kind of load. Especially after camping gear and coolers. I had the same problem when I had 63's. This is just my experience with 63's. I'm not trying to start an argument or anything like that but I have a fair idea(I think) of what you're trying to accomplish.
I don't think I know the guy in Wheatland. Curtis is there so for all I know it could be him. He's not really a 4runner guy though if I remember correctly. Lots of new rigs in Yuba City though. Been meaning to make an introduction, just hardly ever the right time.

not much progress this week been tired.. work taking it's toll... i'm off for the next three days and plan on rebuilding the front end on Friday. I'll be taking off four days starting on Aug 24th and five days starting Sept 1st. My five day "vacation" I plan on having the suspension, front/rear end and steering completely done. All I will need to do at that point is purchase and mount shocks and then start on installing my duals and drivelines. Depending on how long it takes to finish the suspension I may have time to install the duals as well. Just won't have the cash for drivelines yet.

I'll post pic's on Friday of the front end rebuild

got the passenger size tore down and cleaned. just gotta pull the seal out of the axle housing and i'm planning on cleaning the knuckle a little more. majority of the time today was taken up by just cleaning 26 years worth of grease and dirt mess... the bearings actually still look like their in good condition but i'm going to replace them anyways.

tomorrow i'll be tearing the other side down and cleaning, that'll probably be it.. then the following weekend i'll start assembling everything back together.

a few pic's for motivation
