For all of you guys that are running 63's and saying how great they ride. Can you post a picture of what the shackle angle looks like and how far forward you welded the tab to the frame?

I used to have 63's on my 82' Toyota and it was literally like riding on a board!  (stock 3 leaf pack w/ no overload)  you would have thought the ride would be soft but it was horrible. Just wondering what the difference is...

TIA!

Btw I recieved my U bolt flip kit and extended brake lines in the mail today, keep those box's coming!   :)

Yeller, any idea on what your shackle angle is? My current shackles are almost perfectly 90 deg to the frame which I know is not good. Just trying to figure every thing out for my next project.

subscribed- I just read the whole thread and i like where this build is going. here is some input i have.

I have ruf/f150 combo on my 81 and love it. 6 leaf ruf and 3 leaf+overload f150's, this puts my frame height at 24-25 on brand new 35 km2's which measure out at 34.8 on my 8inch wide wheels. I could lower it but I want the extra uptravel. I run 12 inch shocks up front(into engine bay with custom hoops) and use all of them. 10 inch out back angled slightly in. Im keeping az desert wheeling in mind on my build so i wanted to keep them vertical and use as much shock travel i could. Earlier you mentioned a 2x2 rear top shock mount, i built one from 2x2 as well. I have it up against the bottom of the bed and i got my 10's pretty close to verticle. There was no way to get a longer shock in without going through the bed or having them triangled to where they touch in center. which would actually use less shock travel then having them mounted more vertical. This is all personally experience with building my truck, which will have a very similar drivetrain as your runner.

hopefully my babbling will help you or someone reading lol. goodluck with the rest of the build and getting it on the trail. I know what its like to have a build drag out, I have been building mine with slow progress for almost 2 years with little wheeling in between. i have some pictures posted in the 37 and smaller thread if you want to look them up.

i will def. check out the pictures. thanks for all the input!  so if I end up goind 63's or F150's in the back and RUF then i'll be selling my 4" marlin springs soon. there's currently a set of NWOR springs on the front that'll be going in the for sale section.  i'll post pic's of the front bumper this weekend.

Took the new front Marlin bumper down to bare metal and gave it a coat of primer (almost... ran out half way through)  I also pulled all the rust off the U bolt flip plates and hit them with some primer that I found laying around. Still need a few more can's for the bumper. One of the corners had a nice sized dent, I thought about plating it... but it wasn't a big enough dent so I filled it in w/ the welder. Turned out pretty good..

Still need the rebuild kit and front springs...         research continues.

lol, so i'm looking at the RUF FAQ on PBB right now...

Which do you guys prefer, 51" rears from an 89-95' toyota or the 48" rears?

I'll take suggestions for leaf pack configuration's as well :)

48" rears require less modification, but 51" rears should flex more.

I went with 48" rears myself. Took the top 3 leaves from 2 packs and stacked them together.

x2 i took two packs removed overloads. I cut my leafs in a chop saw to stager them. also the spring pin location is different between year ranges something to consider when choosing which pack for the main top leafs.

you bring up an interesting point 81yotalove, wasn't sure how to go about cutting the springs since they're tempered. I was told your not suppose to get 'em out or else you'll have issues.

True/False?

Here's another configuration that I got off the the RUF FAQ that sounds like it would work well.

Pasted from the rears up front FAQ on pirate4x4.com originally posted by  GRMhick these are a spin off of Roger Browns front RUF setup.

"Anyway, my springs are made from a 84 rear pack, and an 83 rear pack. My top leaf is an antiwrap leaf (its only supposed to be on the front half of the spring...) made from the main leaf of an 84 rear pack. Main leaf is the main leaf from a 83 rear pack, second leaf is the mil. wrap off the 83 pack, 3rd leaf is the stock 83 3rd leaf, 4th leaf is the military wrap leaf off the 84 cut down 3.5" shorter than the 3rd leaf on each side, the 5th leaf is the 3rd leaf off the 84 pack cut down so its 3.5" shorter on each side than the 4th leaf."

He's got some great pictures as well.

i'm debating going this direction if I can find the correct year spring packs.

im using first gen rears as my top 3 and 2nd gen rears as my bottom 3 leafs which i cut. Using the chop saw method it cut them quick so not much heat was generated. im running this setup in the stock hanger with 5inch shackle with no death wobble issues from the increased camber. I do plan on doing a drop hanger eventually to move the axle one more inch forward for firewall clearance/pinion angle advantages, but everything functions well now.

Is the suspension super soft on the road?  I was chatting w/ GRMhick on PBB and he said that the pack he made was way too soft for street driving. When you hit the brakes the truck would hit the bumpstops!

I'll be finishing the front bumper today and mounting it. I'll try and post pic's later.

You coming by today still? I forgot I have a chiro appt at 5 in YC but will be back shortly. If you need to look at shackles angles mine are good on my 63's, let me know if your rolling out.

Shamb

kdub I tossed you a PM, I came by but you weren't home. I'll try and swing by tomorrow.

Got my front bumper installed, have some clearance issues that i'll have to address but all in all looks good. I'll try and get a better picture tomorrow.

I had to pull the corner lights off just to get it in there and it's rubbing against the fender on both sides. I'm planning on heating it up around the bend and using a long breaker bar to bend it out a little so the light will clear.

I'm also not done painting it, just primed so it doesnt rust

my pack is not too soft at all. when i first got the suspension/ hysteer done i drove it without shocks front or rear and it was not too soft. I could feel the difference from the stock springs but it didnt make it unsafe if that makes sense, just bounced up and down after bumps on the road(no shocks). Seems like his pack is way to soft but depending on the type of wheeling it might be perfect for him. Shock valving plays a factor too. My advice would be try a 6 leaf pack then add or remove from there, this was my plan and I got lucky with my first pack.

81yotalove, do you have any pictures of the front? and what size tire are you running?

I think i'll give your idea a shot, it sounds like it'll work. I'm planning on running a 5" shackle as well... I'd like to see the clearance on that setup.
