Went and picked up some tools/parts today. I've got a set of doors that i'll be turning into half doors. If anyone needs any of the interior parts/glass for the doors PM me because I won't need it. Got a bench grinder, drill press, some 100 watt lights to mount on the front bumper and a ton of random tools.

Planning on cleaning up/painting the sliders and rear bumper that I pulled off today along with cleaning up the frame on the truck.

I need some persuasion, I want the truck as low as I can get it without removing too much of the fenders/cab. It needs to flex well offroad but also have good/decent road manners.

What kind of spring setup would you run?  pro's/con's of each would be appreciated.

how's the road manners on those setup's?

I recall the 63's being really bumpy on my 82', id imagine the added weight on the 4runner will help...

Just read the entire thread. Looking good, don't know how I missed it before now.  now i'm caught up.  :D

I'm curious, with 3" front springs, what length shock will you be running?

Edit: i'm the only one who voted 3" Alcans up front.  lol.

On Marlincrawler.com (and i'm sure alot of other places like PBB)  It tell's you the collapsed and fully extended length of the Bilstein shocks so once I get the springs under the truck i'll measure the distance between the top of the axle housing and roughly where the top of the shock hoop will be, that'll give me a rough idea as to what size i'll need. With a small lift i'd imagine they'll be 12's.. maybe 14's if I wanted to mount the top of the hoops up into the engine bay. i'll figure all that out after the new springs get mounted (one of the reason's the polls up)  so i can figure out which direction i'm going.

my main objective is to keep it as low as possible without major modifications and also keep the onroad/offroad ride as comfortable as possible.

Cool thanks.  Since I haven't lifted one yet, I have a ton of new questions now that I'm getting parts for my lift.  I'm trying to keep mine low as well, yet some flex on the rocks.  I also plan on the Bilsteins.

Well I voted Bacon :D  After all we already discussed what I have. I do think you can save a little $ by running RUF and fords or chevys. I would run fords so they dont hang out the back end to much though.

Yeller, what was your frame height?

Might be taking the 4runner into my buddies shop this coming up week to pull the front end apart. I could do everything from my garage but he's got alot more accessable tools.

Bought a fire extinguisher today, nothing big... still awaiting parts in the mail.

brain storming, instead of the typical square tube front hanger.. this is what i'm thinking.. cut off the stock mounts and run a piece of 1/2" across the bottom and down where the bolts will go through from the springs, gusset. Ta-Da!

It'll keep the front lift down. Input?

btw get used to my crappy pictures, i don't put much effort into them. just get the point across

It would defiantly keep the lift down. I have no clue about the strength though. If you did do that what I would suggest, get a hold of a press break and bend 90's at the red circles. For the inner parts of each spring hanger use separately bent 90's welded to the 1st piece then gusset the inner corner.

After all that get a piece of say 1/4" and make your own http://www.addictedoffroad.com/images/Products/FrameRefKit.jpg that ties into your new hanger.

May seem like alot of work and I may be over thinking it but I would rather it be to strong then not strong enough.

in the first picture, the red circles your saying just make that all one piece, start with a longer piece of flat bar and bend 90's so it's all one piece no welds then just weld/gusset the inner mount?

that would work.. much stronger as well... i would enclose everything I could just for strength, i like to over do things most of the time.

Correct. I drew another fancy pic to better show it, this time with more color.

3 pieces of steel
-1 long with 2 90 degree bends (the black piece)
-2 short pieces each with a 90 making an L (blue) which would be welded to the 1st and be the inside portion of the spring hanger supporting the bolt and leaf springs.

That would make for a strong front hanger with no extra lift from stock height.

In my previous post I linked a product from addicted offroad. I highly recommend it. It reenforces your front bumper mounts. My 1st trip out with my new bumper and winch I had to get pulled up a last section of a trail and turn around and do the same for a buddy. Well from those 2 pulls my stock bumper mounts were already tearing at the welds.

I have 2nd gen rear mains on my all pro 5in in the front and F 150 with 1 in blocks in the back, it is absolutely great on and off road, I can flex real good and it handles like a civic on the road.  Doesnt' feel like my truck is going to fall over.

If you have the skills and desire, I'd cut out the crossmember with the current spring perches and weld in a standard square tube spring hanger.

http://www.datinfab.com/toyotafrontspringhanger.aspx

Or, make your own custom hanger.

http://www.datinfab.com/frontspringhangerpockets.aspx

Problem may be where the body mounts tie in at the core support.

Thanks for the links, I like how they mounted the brackets flush w/ the square tubing. I've contemplated cutting it out and replacing it w/ something similar but my big concern was the body mounts... dunno if I really want to go that far or not. I've never messed with any of that....

I looked at doing that when I swap to full-widths. The body mounts would need to be addressed, and that's as far as I got  :-\

Little late here but I run the 63s and stock waggy springs and I love it. My runner sits almost identical to Yellers. Road manners are great, rides like a Caddy. :gap:
