I think you'd be just fine with 4:88's glen

i'm leaning towards 5.29's

ok  my trailer / s  are 1000 lb  tandem axle 5 x 12  thats built for a firewood trailer  high clearance  4 inch steel channel construction

last load i hauled  on this one was a ford minivan that weighed 2600 lbs  so  thats 3600  behind the truck

my longer trailer is 14 foot with a 6 foot tongue, (makes tight turns better)  it actually only weighs 950   but i intend to haul  anything up to another toyota truck in weight,  i think with 5.29's  i could tow  this without a problem  :psss:  the 14 footer has electric brakes

...... well i towed around 3000ibls on 33 with i think stock gears and a tired 22r and it was ok.  so what ever U decide you will be fine i think.

ive done it with my 437's  and does fine but i just stay slow,  and the temperature guage is my speedometer,  i figure with  proper gears  i could actually go faster  since the motor doesnt have to work as hard

I tow my 3500# camp trailer.  Get all the gearing you can.  I run through stock low range in town or stops with 4.375 and 37's.

And if you ever went to 35" tires?   Then what, regear again.

Hey Glenny, I tow a 2.5K tent trailer all over.

4:88's with 33's works just fine.
some time I do tow heaver things (like a U-cart with a yard of cement)

and it does pull it.

4:88's with 33"s is a bit lower than stock (my speedo reads about 5 mph fast @ 60)

givin all the work you've gone to to get your hiway revs down I think if you put 5:whatever in you'll just be right back where you were. :twocents:

At 70 mph, the difference would be about 250 rpm's.  That's between 4.88 and 5.29.

4.88's in 5th would be a little taller geared than 4.375's in 4th for reference.

Lower diff gearing will give the effect of a close ratio transmission which aids in towing.

With my 84 I towed 2 Sea Doo's and I had a cabover slide in camper, I ran 4.88's and 33" tires. It didn't go fast and I could average 55mph but I was pushing it a little hard. I think 5.29's would have made pulling that much around easier and less strain on my lil 22r motor.

Voting is not helping seems it is a dead heat, I think what it will boil down to is fuel economy, 4.88's will get better mileage but the 5.29's will be the power champs at the high rpm's.

i woud diffently go for the 5.29's. evan if your top speed is lower pulling hills is going to be much better for your motor. and later dowm the road some stupid girl on a cell phone is going to run into you and then you can make it into a trailered rig with 37's and you dont have to buy gears agin.

GOOD POINT! got to love those girls with cell phones!

I too have a cab-over slid in camper and don't have much trouble going 60, unless I'm going into a good head wind.

Didn't you put oil in it when you changed it? What are you doing taking it to Wally World anyway? Mark says put some 90 wt. in it and it'll quiet up. It's not like it wasn't lubed at all.
