We haven't planned anything yet. I am about to start the work season so I will be working a lot on weekends which sucks but you do what you gotta do. Wade also has some work to do on his truck but he will probably want to go pretty soon. I will definitely post dates when we figure it out. Just kinda recovering from Rubicon and going from there.

Haha no I invested a lot of money in this trip and I am trying to get a car right now so I cant spend any money on my truck or wheeling ATM. As far as I know its always at the Con. My friends and I are trying to make MCR a yearly event.

I am in Thomas' (1985efiyota) boat, but I need a trailer and a truck. I could barrow my Dads truck and use my uncles trailer but I really dont like barrowing :pokinit:. I guess we will see. I really dont want to drive my truck that far, then be a puss on the trail cause I have to drive it back home ya know? I want to go to fordyce hella bad too.
i wouldnt worry about getting it home, we always risk it and our rigs our are DD's. its a built yota just take it out and wheel it and i can almost guarantee it will get you home. we have had some messed up stuff happen and ever time we have gotten home. in other words no excuses, go with us, plus you have to experience a good trail without duals before you can get em in my opinion.

yota_krawler

well I think I am going to put duals in pretty soon because I am moving my axle forward 2 inches and my DL will not be long enough. So I am going to run without one for a while, get duals, get a new DL and run it. Why buy a DL twice. I really do not want to run a square front DL either. When I go I will not use the second case. How bout that?

-Matt-

well if you have duals then use em im just saying don't let not having them hold ya back. it held me back till i said screw it and just went and realized it was actually really good for me.

Okay, so I have been having strange problems.... for some reason, when I first start the truck, the RPM gauge just bounces around like crazy, though the RPMs themselves are normal, just the gauge reads really strange. After about 2-3 minutes of the gauge bouncing around, it normalizes and works fine. Any ideas what is going on??

bad cable/wire....?

i dont remember if the tach is cable or wire.

wire, it could be frayed or cracked somewhere and its being dumb when its cold.

and same with the cable, could be cold and sticking?
just my guesses.

46&2

Okay, well that was my first instinct, but this morning on the way to work, it was doing the same thing but it was also bogging down and and stuttering, acting like it wanted to die. When I first fired it up, it ran for about 10 seconds then lugged out and died. While bogging out it would flash the check engine light. The second time I fired it up it acted like it wanted to die, but I revved it out and it stayed running, but I could hear it wasn't running quite right. The check engine light would flash on and off with the lugging of the engine. Then, after I started driving I made it about a mile before the engine started lugging and jerking again, but as long as I gave it gas it would keep going. This happened for about 2 minutes of driving. Then the engine had warmed up and it all stopped. Randomly during the 20 minute drive to work the RPM gauge would bounce but the engine would not bog. by the last 10 or so minutes of the drive everything seemed normal. It was a warm day so after work the truck warmed up pretty quick but it did act like it did this morning, bouncing RPMs and a brief stint of lugging. After I started driving it stopped, as the truck was warm. So it seems that the RPM cable/wire is being affected by the cold temps (the weather has been really cold the last 3-4 days in the morning, when these problems arose) but why does the engine bogging seem to correlate? To me I can't see how the two could be related. I was thinking maybe my fuel filter might be bad, but I just replaced it no more than a year, year and a half ago. When my girlfriend gets home I am going to check the diagnostic codes and see if anything comes up...

So to sum it up for those who might not want to read a paragraph:
when cold, it stutters, bogs out and the rpm gauge bounces around erratically without following the actual rpms. once the truck is warm all problems seem to dissapear, aside from occasional RPM gauge bouncyness. any input greatly appreciated :gap:

soudns like similar problems (besides the tack) that i have had, in my case i got jsut a little bit of water in my distributor. if you have driven in the rain or been puddle mashin and your cap seal is bad it could easily be that. might not be but its worth a check. i would also check out your other major sensors like MAF and TPS pull the plugs and make sure they look good and dry. and if it does it again diagnose the check engine while you have it since it would probably help pinpoint the problem. i know when i have had damp distributor problems it would do the same at start up but i could power through it and it would usually work itself out. someone else correct me if im wrong but i dont think it would be cold start. i couldnt immagine it effecting your engine that much especially with whats going on. i would say fuel filter (like you stated) would be a good idea. iv also had problems similar to that but the big intake hose that goes into the throttle body had cracked on the bottom where you couldn't see and it was throwing off the computer since it was pulling in air after the mass air flow sensor. you can easily check that by letting it run and then moving around the intake portion from the air box to the throttle body and see if the rps change or wants to die.

Jordan7118

Just a guess on the cold start injector. I swapped mine and it made a big difference. However, our engine woes aren't the same.

So... Good luck!  :hammerhead:

i didnt read all of matts post i would also check out the TPS... mine did that a time or two when it was going out... something to look into

THK Matt

I'm STILL fighting why my engine is running like junk, im bout to just send it to the shop and have them fix it.

my buddy just came to me with the same problem, his motor was idling super rough and at a lower rpm than usual, bogging out ready to die.... I found that his intake pipe had a small hole worn into it from rubbing a pulley, i busted out the duct tape for a quick fix and it instantly cured all....... definatley inspect any possible intake leaks (manifold and tube) and vacuum hoses, good luck partna!

OKAY, so I think I figured out where all my electrical and starting problem was coming from. I was poking around today trying to figure out why my truck would start, idle for a couple seconds, then die. I could not get it to run the past two days. So going through all my electrical I came across one set of 3 wires that connected to my ignition. It had come un-zip tied and was sitting closer to the header than it should have. Upon feeling it it was very dry and the heat shield crumbled in my hand, and inside the 3 wires were practically melted together. So I cut out the bad section and patched it all up and it seems to work fine now. And some of my other strange electrical problems like random interior lights not working and the buzzer that disappeared seem to all work now, so it must have just been screwing with the whole system. Hopefully that was also the cause of my truck acting so strange a week or two ago.

Tried to smog the 4runner, didn't pass. I couldn't get the idle down any lower than 1,150 RPMs warm and one of the numbers (forgot the name) was at 200 where as its supposed to be at 50. the lower my idle went the higher it got. Gotta go mess with it today see if I can't get it to pass. This is the first time I have ever had a vehicle fail smog. Pretty gay, last two times my truck passed with flying colors... I hate CA.... freakin' hippies and their smog laws

Got the 4runner to smog a week or so ago, ended up having to retard the hell out of it, and mess with the MAF. Luckily my mechanic has a smog machine at his shop so we just plugged it into that and messed with it until it passed. Re-tuned it up the other day even better than before and she is running like a champ now, now it has some balls.  :driving:

I also decided to clean up this thread a little bit and since I have been doing a lot with my Axial I decided to make my own build page for that on the RC forum. So here is the link to my Axial AX-10 RTR build

Haha they can kiss my :moon:. The irony of CA smog laws are that I had to make my truck run like :pokinit: to pass, it had no power and I was getting less than 10 MPG. So technically, to pass emissions laws you have make your truck waste more gas and run poorly which seems almost like it defeats the point in the first place. Now my truck has tons of power and is getting 15+ Mpg. Smog :shakehead:

Same thing with my 4Runner, to get it to pass smog it ran like crap no power, couldn't even out race it's own shadow down the street.
