We went out to the Greenhorn Cleanup day hosted by the Friends of Greenhorn today. Pretty good turn out and a lot of great news to hear from Bebe. She has been working her butt off trying to help save the area for OHV use. What a kick ass lady

Sounds like things might work out in the end for Greenhorn, the FOG are planning to purchase a 40 acre piece of land with one of the most challenging GH trails on it as well as continuing  to fight to regain lost territory. All hope is not lost for the area...

I was amazed at how clean the place really was, in fact for about 4 hours worth of trash clean up my group of 4 only managed to fill one large size trash bag and two house sized trash bags. We also found several big chunks of rusty scrap steel and some old car parts and trim pieces but that was about it. People are finally getting the clue by not trashing the place and packing out more then they come in with. Really nice to see. The place used to be a mess. Anyway on to the pics. Didn't take that many but had to get a few of the runner in there :gap:

Turnout (give or take rigs out and about collecting trash)

My buddy Ryan mashing on the stocker, soon to get a Downey long travel front suspension, 33s and some rear deaver springs

No its a very rare straight axle 4x4 version of the Corolla, only a few were ever produced, not to be mistaken with a 4runner which looks very similar :gap:

My guess is that it is what's left over from a hydraulic water line from when they hydro mined the area.

Thanks man I appreciate it!! I love my 63s in the rear. Ride really nice on the road and flex awesome. Only thing I MIGHT have done different would be to have bought 1.5" or 2" lifted chevy 63 springs to make the rear sit a little more even. With the stock front spring hanger though and the 63s in the rear it sat perfectly. it was when I did the drop box that it got the baja rake. Just lack of foresight on my part. Im just going to run a longer shackle in the rear and maybe a slight drop shackle hanger to get it even with my front hanger and waggoneer springs. Otherwise I think they are one of my favorite mods to my truck. My suspension has changed a lot in the front over the years but my rear suspension has remained practically unchanged since the day I did it.

hey I want some specs on your 63's!

All I have are some standard 4 pack 63s out of a 1988-1998 1/2 ton Chevy or GMC truck. I am running them with a 1" add a leaf and a dual shackle set up with the stock chevy 4x4 shackle and a 6" toyota shackle. Probably going to go to 4x4 Labs tomorrow and have Luke make me up a set of 8" shackles to try and even my rear out a little more.

Its a pretty simple swap, just involves a little cutting and welding. Didn't take us very long to bust out.

If replacing stock 48" springs, mount the front spring hanger 11" forward of the stock spring hanger, center hole to center hole. This keeps the axle in the stock location. You can also use a string or something and hang it down from the frame to the center pin of the stock springs and adjust your 63s accordingly if you want; I just went with the 11" on my 85 4runner and it was PERFECT. 3rd gen trucks you have to mount the front hanger 9" to 9.5" forward of the stock hanger. Run a stock shackle or a double shackle from the stock hanger. Thats about it.

hey Nick, since we both have 85 4Runners, when I set up 63s, 11" forward on  the front hanger.... whats the rear hanger? I see you have a dual shackle setup..... If i went single shackle.... what's the difference in hanger placement?\

also how's that dual setup on the city and highway? seem to unload?

Rear hanger stays where it is if you place the front hanger 11" forward of stock and run dual shackles. You can run either a single shackle or a double shackle from the stock rear hanger but your shackle angle would probably suck if you ran just a single shackle from the stock rear hanger. If running a single you would probably want to mount the shackle hanger where my IFS bumpstop is located. Personally, I think doing 63s with a stock chevy shackle (or equivilent length) and a 6" inch or so "standard" shackle is the way to go. It makes mounting the 63s a breeze plus the the double shackle kicks ass IMO.

I get no unloading, rides great down the road. Honestly I forget I have dual shackles until I am flexed as hell and rear axle just keeps going down. There is enough pressure against the chevy shackle that the second shackle works just like a normal single shackle until you need that EXTRA bit of flex, where the chevy shackle drops down. Even hammering down on the trail or on the street I have never noticed any kind of unloading. A lot of people always mention this in regards to 63s, but I think people who have problems with chevy springs and dual shackles unloading or inverting did not mount them right. Going with the specs I used (from 63 spring swap on PBB) centers the axle perfectly just like stock and gives a PERFECT shackle angle. I also have yet to invert a shackle, which I see the most when people have mounted the springs differently then the Pirate FAQ recommends.

IMO if you mount them per pirate specs you will be VERY satisfied with the 63s and dual shackles. Aside from tweaking my rear end to gain another 1" or 2" of lift via shackles, I do not have any plans to change my rear suspension. I love it. People are always amazed at how much it flexes, especially considering that excluding rear shocks, I have about $60 bucks into my rear suspension :gap:

EDIT: I added a picture above of the shackles "closed" for reference

Also for some  :stopit: news I got pulled over on the way to work this morning and apparently Officer richard Licker wasn't satisfied with my giant ass mudflaps and wrote me a ticket for "No Mudguards" which apparently is CHP talk for fender flares. So in speaking with one of my coworkers who used to have an off road fab shop, he claims that as long as 2/3s of your tire is inside your fender and you have mudflaps you are legal. I am not sure if this is the case so I am going to research some CA vehicle code laws. Also my mechanic has been wheeling Toyotas for 20 or so years and I know he has dealt with this crap so I am going to talk to him to see if maybe I can fight it. My front tires only stick out like 1 inch (stock front axle, 15x10 wheels, 35x12.50 tires, no wheel spacers) and my rear sticks out 1.5" wider on each side because I have an IFS rear axle. My rear can't be more than 2" out from the fender though. So if there is a way to fight it I am going to. freakin' CHP :moon:, the SECOND he turned in behind me he lit me up. Made me 20 minutes late for work

Probably just started his shift and hadn't had his coffee and doughnuts yet....  :shake:

I will run the dual shackle setup!

Probably going to try an 8" shackle instead of a 6". It just sags a little bit in the rear, but my rear chevys were also on a buggy with 44s before I got them so they were very WELL broken in by the time I put them on. With the top off my truck sits perfectly level right now how it is.
