So for anyone using the 3RZ doner body harness in an early 4Runner...  No one does this but me I guess, anyway:

The passenger turn signal wire comes off the passenger side of the body harness right by the ECU plugs, not on the driver side like the older models.  No big deal except for I hunted for that sucker for like an hour and a half.  All the other rear lights for both sides hook to the drivers side wire mess by the fuse block, so they had me fooled into looking for it there.

First road trip last weekend we got 24.5 miles per gallon loaded with kids and saddles with 35" tires and 5.29s!

im finishing up a 99 2.7 into an 87 turbo 4runner, got the motor running with just 5 wires off the motor harness, and made the t100 pan work with the ifs($600+ for an oil pan is a ripoff) and i built a set of bolt in motor mounts that use the stock toyota motor mounts.
its gonna be a beast comparred to the 22rte with a worn out turbo that was in there.

Are you keeping the digital dash or swapping it out?  If you are keeping it, how is that working out?

boggerunner

we already swapped in a 22re sr5 cluster, the digital one didnt work when we got the 4runner.

What MPH?  I've got 33s and stock 4.10s and I haven't seen better than 20mpg...  I do have an EGR insufficient flow code and I run around 75-80mph though. Think this would hurt my mileage?  And why?

That's crazy... I am only getting 15.5 mpg (87 Runner, 5.29's, 37" mtr's)

From what I read on TTORA forum it looks like 19 is average "stock" gas mileage..

Must be cause your truck is really light... or your speedo is off!

H8PVMNT

I was going about 70 mph in 4th and 5th gear with about half the trip varied elecation with ups and down and half fairly level. That trip was pretty much all highway.

We just did another similar road trip for work with about 140 miles of highway at about 75 mph and about an hour of around town, an hour of farm roads and steep fire roads mixed in and still got almost 22 mpg.

Another trip I was puching a big headwind an going 80 mph and got about 17.5 mpg, so the speed we are going has a pretty drastic effect.  If we stay under 75 it makes a big difference.

My speedo reads about 7% slow but I am accounting for the 7% in all this calculation.  Like I said above keeping it under 75 or even at 70 seems to really make a difference.  I did a pretty good port and polish and the balance shafts are left out, that might contribute. I will have to weight the truck sometime, I think I'm  well over 4,000 lbs, when it was a '94 pickup it was about 4,250 with tools but I'm not sure now.

Has anyone actually tested the tach signal with a meter?

Mine doesn't seem to want to change with rpm. Any ideas?

rcbro

Edit to my post above...

The Tach signal output from the ECU is DC voltage. However it does not increase with rpm increase. It simply never changes.

I found the Engine RPM input to the ECU and it is AC and does change with RPM. However does not work with the gauges.

Anyone have some input on what to try next?

Other then finishing my personal goodies, I'd say my motor swap is done. It runs great, drives great and produces no codes. I'm happy!

I like the intake tube. Any info on it? Where to buy, specs, how it's supported, etc...?

In the hunt for an intake without all the flashing autozone bling I came across this while searching through some catalogs. Its made by Airaid for the do it yourself people. Basically a 3" tube with bends and straights you cut to work for your application. May be pricing to some, but its enough to do two so I'm splitting it with the brother in law.

Basically cut of the section I needed and removed 3" from the straight section.

I borrowed a large p-clamp for work :smokin: and used the throttle cable bracket bolt to mount it down. Pretty darn stout!

I've got plenty of clearance from the fan. Plan to make one more bracket for the filter end just to be safe.

I intake tube was rubbing on the coil pack nut, so alittle heat gun massaging and that issue was takin care of. I then found some 3/8 barb fitting, drilled and tapped the tube, coated the fittings with some RTV and we were good to go.

From my build thread here's the info

So I ran codes today and my only code is a P0401 "insufficient EGR flow".  The guy at the place with the check tool says I probably just need more restictive exhaust to get enough back pressure.  I know a bunch of you have probably had this code, do I just need smaller exhaust, freshen up the egr or what?

Other than that it ran great for 3000 miles to the coast and back.  21 miles per gallon overloaded with the family and 800 pounds of camping stuff, tools and food. We got a hesitation at 3500 rpms for a while which has turned out to be caused ( I think) by the negative terminal to body ground on the doner harness being crusty.  We figured this out today when we lost ground in town and fiddled with things a bit. I will replace it with a bigger fresher wire...

I am anxious to know the answer to the "insufficient flow" code also.  Mine has had it from the beginning as well.  I am running 2-1/4" exhaust throughout.  And will this affect mileage?

H8PVMNT

That's what I was wondering too because I'm getting pretty good milage now with the 2 1/4".

I did the jumper for the EGR and am not even using it and I get no codes.. super simple to jump the connector on the harness side with a resistor.

H8PVMNT

That's great! So you just block off the EGR stuff?  What ohm resistor do you use and where do you get that sort of thing?

Use a 10k OHM - 1/2Watt -

You can get them from Radio Shack or your local electronics store.

H8PVMNT

Thanks for the good information!

So I pulled out the sensor that feels the EGR flow and it was covered in a crusty hard layer of carbon.  I cleaned it off with a 3M scratchy pad and put it back in.  So far no EGR code but time will tell.  I really like the idea of deleting the EGR anyway...

Where exactly does the resistor go?  On the VSV for the EGR valve harness, or the EGR temp sensor on the backside of the intake, or where? A search hasn't given me the exact location...  A link to it perhaps...?  Thanks guys.

And H8, I am getting 18.5mpg at 80mph.  19.5-22mpg if I slow it to 65-75.  Better than the 14mpg from the tired 22R, and it couldn't do 70mph... Lol

H8PVMNT

I looked at my harness and it appears from his photo that the resistor goes on the plug that goes on the temp sensor.  This makes sense because the resistor would tell the ECU that everything was OK.

I got a resistor from radio shack and put it in in the parking lot.  It works!  About 200 miles so far and no insufficient EGR codes.  Thanks for the tip.

Alright stupid simple question, take it easy on me.... I apologize in advance.  :-\ What are most of you using for the heater control valve and such? My 87 pickup had the ancient 90 degree metal one and the short stiff cable it used is too short to reach anywhere but where the stock one was. The EGR valve is all up in the way.

What's the ticket? I searched and got nothing and can't make it out from the pics. Tacoma valve and cable maybe? Mounted where the vin plate is? I have the stock Tacoma hoses, and I'm going to the junkyard this weekend to try and score me an EFI tank. Just hopin for a tip on what parts to put on my list. Thanks.

rcbro

I used the tacoma valve setup. My cable is to short because I put the on/off valve on the passenger side. When I get a free weekend, I'm going to flip the two and my stock cable will be sufficient in length.

If I could find a longer cable or make one I wouldn't have to change it. I put it in this location because I saw others did the same thing. What they are using for a cable I dunno, because I couldn't find one at the junkyard. Granted mines a first gen so maybe there's a different. For now I just manually jump out and flip it on/off when I want it.
