Chim at it again!
« on: Feb 27, 2011, 08:58:22 PM »
I have always regretted getting rid of my 85 4Runner.. I had bought 2nd Gen runners in hopes of old glory but they are just not the same, and would require a ton of work!!
Old Runner...

But today I struck gold! I had just sold my Subaru Saturday in order to get serious about getting another 1st Gen runner.. so today I was checking craigslist every ten minutes for possible new ads when I found my new 4Runner...

Here it is... maybe the guy who built it will recognize it.. its an 86, 22re, 5-speed with a supposed 25k on rebuild.. time will tell.. it has a SAS, 6 shooter knuckles, 30 spline longs, trussed, armored, detroits front and rear, hi-steer, 5150 Bilsteins on all 4 corners, 63" chevys, 35 bfg mt's, and lots more...
Here are some crappy pics.. I have now been the owner for 4 hrs! It needs lots of little things, but is a driver as is. As always, I will document it all on here :)
Better pics to come.

Welcome back to the world of being a Toyota owner!  What the spring looking thing in the first picture of the new runner?  I would guess air line if it had an ARB in the front.

It does have some good mods which is why I was so stoked about it....

BUT... not so stoked about the drive to work in it today! It has some funky engine issues that I need to figure out... the motor seems bogged down and idles crappy until I get my foot into the accelerator and then it seems to want to go.. but not until I really step on... It starts fine... shuts off fine... I am not sure what it is... maybe plugged EGR? Anyone have issues like this??

My buddy had an '85 that ran like that and it had the timing chain off a few teeth.  We went though TPS and alot of other tings before we figured it out.

I don't think it would be a tooth when it has about 25k on it.. I'm going to try pulling codes at lunch today and see what that says... check to see if my knock sensor is still plugged in.. and go from there... I agree on the TPS though.. very well could be that too...

I just went out and pulled the code... it was 5 flashes which says to indicate bad O2 Sensor... I have a header to the sensor is right before the cat... its a one wire sensor.. does this sound right?

Another couple pics

Here is a quick interior shot...
The 5" tach is going to go.. I want to try to find a sr5 cluster with tach built in.. then get some factory door panels and factory seats.

i will trade yea that tach for a sr5 cluster...

also try disconnecting the TPS and seeing if it runs better.... Buddie down here did that and it runs good. so its been like that for year plus

I want to try the o2 sensor tonight before I start unplugging things.. but I had thought about that as an option to try if this fails...

I would definitely trade you the tach for a cluster... pm and send some pics if you are serious :)

I have some nice seats here if someone has some factory gray buckets they want to trade for... These ones make me sit too high... I'm 6'-4 and I have to bend my head down a little to see out the windshield more comfortable..

If I remember correctly, on the first gen 4runner (second gen p/u) the O2 sensor was mounted in the exhaust manifold.  The newer 2nd gen 4runners (3rd gen p/u) had the O2 sensor down in the pipe right before the cat.

Good to see ya back in the Toy Chim.

Thanks Cheese :) Mine ended being down right before the cat.. I have a header.. so it was super easy to replace.. just two bolts and one wire, and it was only $38.. so that was good.. and it seemed to help.. I think if could be better, but its definitely running better..

I went over to my gramps' house last night and picked up a few things to collect for getting my interior back in order :)
I got a set of factory gray buckets... the passenger seat is taken apart but its there and with no rips... the drivers seat has a good back, but needs a new bottom if anyone has one they want to sell..
And then I need both headrests and gray seat plastics...
I also got two perfect rear side panels for the very back.. I still need door panels and passenger panels at back seat..
Then I got a new stereo bezel so I can get rid of the trio gauges..

So I am still trying to get this thing running right.. There is still some sluggish response on acceleration, then its like it hits its power band and takes off.. its not all the time.. its pretty inconsistent...

Here is what I have done so far:
o2 sensor (because of engine light)
Cap, Rotor, Plugs, Wires, PCV valve
Adjusted TPS sensor,
Tested AFM
Disabled EGR
New Fuel Pressure Regulator
New Fuel Filter
New Fuel Pump

Going to check my engine grounds next.. any ideas, anyone else have this problem?

Even though my engine is not completely dialed in and figured out I am still managing to get some other things done... cleaned the nasty headliner..

Before...

After...

Took the 5" tach out...

Getting ready to install one of these....

I just need to buy the right oil sending unit..
then I can get rid of all these and get my dash looking close to factory...

I actually want to make my dash look like my old 85 dash.. nice and clean...
