I'm a newb so bare with me ???. I got an 83 frame with 81 cab. Tell I get a bigger trailer I'm taking it easy :driving:. I bought this rig to be a serious crawler :driving:. I want to build it right the 1st time around. I can accomplish this with this forums knowledge and first hand experience. To start I want 2"x3" tube my rear, inboard F150s with johnny joints on the end not the bottom. Stocks rears up front plus 2 packs from stock front. In the process I have planed to relocate my gas tank and toolbox into my flat bed. Rock bumper and sliders. Ill figure lockers and all the other stuff later on in the build. I was hoping for lots of advice or recommendations, supportive pics or links. Anyways here she is.

axled89

well if you want real rock crawler.  then it can't be a broke a$$ build.      good luck.   looks like a good starter vehical.

i love oregon wheelin.

Welcome to the disease!!!

We've all been there at one point... Super budget, cheap build, etc.. then reality hits  :rofl2:

Great platform though, I joke about the budget thing but in all honesty you can go pretty far with second hand parts, junkyard scouring and some ingenuity.... but the bottom line is money WILL BE SPENT!!  Good luck, you're in the right place.

I bought her for $600, got about $1200 in the motor so far. Got another project motor with 20r head 22r valves. guaranteed to have lots in her as  the time passes :hammerhead:, Trying to save the big bucks for later when I start the duals, lockers, chromo, beadlocks, etc. Like all hobbies they get pricey, and I have tooo many toys for my own well being. going the welding and torch rout for now.

82juguete

Yep... while you can build bumpers, build sliders, weld random pieces of scrap metal together and make a hood ornament  :eyebrow: ... then when you've saved up, find a used locker, gears, etc.  and youll get the ball rolling...  its surprisingly easy to get these things trailworthy (depending on how much of a hammerhead/leadfoot you are haha)

So I found some pics to give an idea what I want to do. What you guys think. any pros or cons? :therethere: I was thinkinking of using banana shackles  to space my leaves properly. I need input im a newby..

ninja turtle

SloCrawler

So I got sum 57" ford F150 springs at the junk yard for $40.  I got a guy whos going to fab sum inboard hangers like these. Got to get highsteer creeper joints and bannanna shackles and my new crossmember weldin in and im ready to put all this :pokinit: on.

Word hard, Keep your head in the game and if anyone gets in your way tell them you don't give a damn !

look at the picture and imagine what would happen with thos shackles, the first tim you cram that tire your shackles will go almost upside down and would probably get stuck. i dont persionally like the idea i would never trust it

i dont know why but that doesnt look as bad  just as long as the shackles dont go upside down on ya. i have never seen it in action im kinda curious to see how it does

I figured if the shackles went up I would be able to shove that tire up more. Im placing those hanger forwards 4" and in 4". and yes ill have to move my perches in as well

IronClad

if you're shackle angle is right then they wont ever flip up. the pic is just making it look alot worse than it is since the front end is like on the ground and the ass is pointing so far up in the air.

I was planning on running 40-45 degree with bannanna shackles to achive more drop.

SloCrawler

My truck has always idled a little high, but just recently she died on me, now she barally idles at all with full throttle. I checked all spark and fuel pressure, its good. TPS, Dashpot, EGR on the list to check. Im stumped been trying for 2weeks now.... GGRRR :hammerhead:

toyotanner

TPS? you got a 22re in that beast?

82juguete

if it has a 22re, i cant help you... if its a 22r, try running some fuel treatment in the gas and clean the crap outta the carb with carbcleaner... ive had similar symtoms 3or4 times and that did the trick...might look into a carb rebuild(like i should be doing)

22r.  Great day to end out the year, We ruled out the carb being the problem, Pulled The cat. and full of crap. :yikes: Beat a nice hole through and It rung great, best I have ever had it running.

82juguete

nice it was an easy fix! funny ive had that happen before too, was coming back from lunch one day and suddenly i had ZERO power or acceleration.... sure enough, the old baffling from the stock cat was clogging the pipe almost completely.

85camoyota

thats a sick little wheeler boggers are the best that front sun visor on the front is legit

SloCrawler

Handles the log piles for now.All stock springs

i love the look of that visor on that thing! im gonna have to get me one of those! nice build up so far, im gonna go RUFs on mine too but chevy 63's in the back since its not going to be to hardcore of a trail truck for awhile. check out my 83 hilux build.

So I took my springs in and fabbed them up. I took the F150 sprngs out of a 97 2wd and threw away the bottom overload, and cut about 5" off the next leaf on both sides and rearched them with a little extra arch. Did the same process with RUF. Well see how they look.

update.Sum updates. Shackle angle is more like 55 degrees. Thinking of adding another pack with more arch to get closer to 45. Need to get sum shims to level pinion angle. Starting to weld flat bed to frame today and relocate gas tank.

SloCrawler

Geting Double axle trailor next weekend. Finally able to make it offroad use only.

Not please with front shackles angle. Was tryng to get around 45 degrees seems to be closer to 60. Thinking of adding another pack or shorter shackles. Got my inboard hangers tacked in and moved foward 11" from stock. Trying to figure out best way to weld in my  crossmember to work with creeper joints. Was going to tack it all in  throw an extra 100lbs and see how it sits. Any advice? Hows my shackle angle looking and my 4 pack springs

SloCrawler

sum updates geting close to finish
