SloCrawler

rather than going to a diffrent pitman arm I'm thinkin of modding this one with a heim joint on top... any thoughts

superyota

i would get a heim and check it first to make sure it's not going to bind up when the passenger side drops.

jrock

Do it. It should work fine. If it binds, get a high angle spacer.

SloCrawler

heim joint or something like this? right now my pitman arm is really the only thing holding me up. got a new camper and been working on instead of crawler time to finish this  :pokinit: :

jrock

Just drill it out and throw a hiem in there.

SloCrawler

Big thanks to superyota, front axle all welded up ready to intall gears and rebuild

superyota

I'll bring you a drive shaft this weekend so we can hook the front end up.  looks good.  figure out where your bump stops are going to be and we'll weld up the rear shock mount this weekend too.

SloCrawler

Got some 1/4" plate to extend my front hanger foward, some 3/16" for shock tabs, and some square to make a front driveline..

SloCrawler

so my front hanger is 43" from shackle hanger to spring hanger. my tires barely rub and my shackle is a little agrresive. im thinking of extending to 45" giveing me more clearance for tires and better shackle angle. plus ill should give a little lift to clear my pitman

SloCrawler

change in plans, im goint to just cut off drop hanger and push foward tell drag links are parallel, hopefully i dont weakin frame too much

BigBs84

You can redrill your center pins to get the axle forward a bit more, but that wont do anything for your shackle angle. Damn rework :hammerhead:
Build it wright-wind it tight
   High-N-Tight offroad
http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=45027.0 My truggy build

SloCrawler

I also had to special order bearings to make my V6 spool work in a 4cyl carrier, should have axles done soon

Sparkplug

I think you should move the steering box forward, and rotate it. That will put the nut at the end of the spring, and arm level, so the spring cant hit it, no matter how flat your springs go. Its how I set up my 4runner
2008 TRD 4x4 Double Cab Tacoma
1994 12 valve 5 speed 4x4 single cab dodge 2500
1986 22re 5speed 3link 4runner (the beater)
1982 3rz swapped pickup (in progress)

SloCrawler

I want to fix my pitman clearance and tire clearance and shackle angle at ounce, and the best way is geting that hanger foward, so im either cuting it off and moving foward or adding some plate like this..

superyota

cut it off and move it forward.  you've already cut out your core support to make room for the box going through it, now unbolt the springs from the axle, or from the hangers and swing it forward til your tie rod and dragling are parallel.

that's most likely what I'm going to do,  just waiting to get front axle back, then ill see how foward I can go.

SloCrawler

got rear axle ready to be bolted on, got hydro assist to put on front axle and 1.5" spacer match the rear

superyota

sweet! now get it over to sean's so you can get it all mounted and welded up.

SloCrawler

you think i need to have the front axle on to get my rear pinion angle correct?

superyota

no.  get the rear mounted up.  the front axle has nothing to do with the rear pinion angle

SloCrawler

rear end installed and E brake hooked up, just need shocks now, my buddy called me from slo pro and said the front axle is all done he just needs to put gear oil in the closed knuckles, i told him i think they just take grease and hes convinced other wise.

superyota

there is a plug at the top of the knuckle.  pull it and pump a tube of grease into each side.  thats what I did.  do not put gear oil in the knuckles.  thats not what goes in there.  grease is all that is supposed to be in the knuckles.

:yikes:

i'm really suprised that i'm the only one that is posting up on this.  you NEVER put oil in the knuckle's/hubs.  I would be very skeptical about your buddy and the work he does if he claims to be a mechanic and is advising you to put oil in there.  i'll see if i can find a link about this subject and post it up for you.

nice tow rig by the way.  looks good!
