230k out of 97 4unner im pretty happy :) the wiring is going to be the scary part

chim

Mines a 98... So our wiring should be similar... I will try to take some notes

83 Crawler

Going to hook everything up to factory dash?

chim

Yeah, only difference should be under the hood visually :) fingers crossed! Wiring is definitely scary!

This place called toyonlyswaps.com sells stand alone wiring harness for 550 for carb trucks so they might sell something for efi

chim

I have all the wiring its just interpreting the diagrams that I need to do... 550 seems like a ton of money!! Did you not get the wiring for your swap with the engine?

83 Crawler

ya i have the wiring a ecu,

chim

Let the work begin...

Time to say goodbye to 22RE

Had her out in about 1.5 hours

chim

22RE Bell housing

3RZ / 22RE Bell housing comparison

3RZ Housing all bolted up... doesn't get much easier than that!

83 Crawler

yes the good stuff!!! keep it coming! :eye:

chim

Instead of trying to re-bend my existing clutch line I just bought factory 98 Tacoma clutch lines and bell housing bracket... made the clutch line mod super simple and clean!

Oh yeah, new slave cyl..

chim

New clutch.. resurfaced flywheel.. pretty self explanatory..

chim

Then we worked on the fuel line....

The factory fuel line will not reach to the other side of the motor to where the factory 3RZ fuel filter is mounted....
So we modified again.... we moved the 3RZ fuel filter towards the rear of the motor and re-bent the line that feeds the fuel rail....

You can see the filter sticks out just past the block in order for the fuel line to cross over the bell housing and connect.

Then a home made heat shield was added to protect the fuel line from the exhaust EGR crossover tube...

So here you can see how the fuel line was bent and fed towards the drivers side.

chim

Needed to make a new battery cable to reach to the drivers side...
This is a piece 8'-4" long... (4g)

Then wrapped it around the engine bay.. should have used black.. oh well..

Got the motor installed...

83 Crawler

what motor mounts you using?

chim

Used Chilkat motor mounts.. then drilled a hole in the side to support the dipstick and manifold brace...

Power steering was easy... pressure line threaded right in, just needed to curve the line a little... non-pressure line was trimmed and fitted...

83 Crawler

how long have you been working on it?

chim

I thought I could just bend the throttle cable bracket for the 22RE cable but there was a little bind and I didn't like it..

So I added a little spacer plate and now it works like a champ..

not bad started on wiring yet?

chim

Started cutting parts to get the intake figured out..

chim

Got the LCE swap header in... will actually need to be tweaked a little since it just barely comes into contact with shackle bolt.. will get more pics later..

chim

Now the wiring part... ugh...
The two different computers..

Paperwork... lots of it...

The process of identifying and labeling..

chim

So we ended the night with cranking it over and it cranks great, it just wont fire... fuel is circulating but no spark.. we really need better diagrams for the 4runner ECM plugs on the body side.. the diagrams on TTORA don't really show it.. any help would be appreciated!

I will post more pics next weekend of the progress... radiator hoses, exhaust, more wiring, etc.. :)

83 Crawler

i cant wait to get started on mine!!!

i cant wait to get started on mine!!!

Its going pretty smooth so far.. just lots of little tweeks and stuff that add up in time... I will try to document most stuff :)

83 Crawler

o are you doing all the smog stuff? or getting rid of egr and stuff?

chim

I want to get this EGR block off kit
http://www.lceperformance.com/EGR-Block-Plate-Kit-2RZ-3RZ-5VZ-p/1016017.htm
and for now I will be running the evap box until I can figure out how to eliminate it without engine codes..
