EVAP

I know what vacuum lines you are talking about.  I will take some pictures tomorrow morning when I get off of work.

Does anyone know if you have to run all the emissions bs like the cat, etc.?

Thanks for the diagram SFD4X4. That clears up the fuel line (had that one right, just needed to check).

I still am not clear on where the vacuum line from the intake plenum goes...from the diagram it would seem to be #1,  but I could have sworn I had something else plugged in there.  I'll go take a look and report back w/ pics.

If you don't have your O2 sensors hooked up its not going to run well since the ECM needs the feedback(could probably get away w/out a CAT though?).  If you don't have smog I've seen multiple posts on deleting the evap box, but no first hand experience to verify this works without issues.

i know you need the o2 sensors but i was mainly talking about the cat.

I ran my swap with only one cat until recently. With only one cat i was getting a code but it was not effecting the way it ran at all. After i put in the second cat it ran exactly the samemwith no check engine light, the only difference is i lost a lot of top end power wen i put it in.  I found a company online that makes a device u plug in instead of the 2nd o2 and it sends the correct signal to the ecu so it thinks it has a cat and the o2 is working properly.  Once i get my truck refered and smog the cats are comming out and that device is going in.
Just my 2 cents. :)

That mechanic is a joke.

Heres some reference material for you.

2jz motors are non-interference
VVTi (98+) 2jz motors are interference

1MZ-FE is non-interference
1MZ-FE with VVTi is interference
3MZ-FE is interference

All VZ blocks are non-interference

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/archive/topic/37831-1.html

4A-FE is a non-interference
4A-GE is interference

I also found this:

Engine:      Interference
1.5 (1A-C, 3A-C) Yes
1.5 (5E-FE)      No
1.6 (SOHC)       No

and here

Toyota Motor Corporation has produced a wide variety of automobile engines. The company follows a simple naming system for their modern engines: 1. The first numeric characters specify the engine block's generation 2. The next one or two letters specify the engine family 3.
The suffix (separated by a dash) specifies the features of the engine:
Suffix Feature  A Valvematic variable lift intake head
B Twin SU-style side-draft carburetors
C Carburated / California Emissions Controlled
D Twin Downdraft carburetors
E Electronic Fuel injection
F Economy narrow-angle valve DOHC
G Performance wide-angle valve DOHC
H High compression like 9.8:1 (example: 5E-FHE)High pressure charged (example: 2L-THE)
I Single-point fuel injection
J Autochoke (Early models) or unknown pollution control
L Transverse
M Philippines' market (meaning unknown)
N CNG fuel
P LPG fuel
R Low Compression (For 87 and below octane fuel)
S Swirl intake (1980s)
SE Direct injection (1990s)
T Turbocharged
U With Catalytic converter Japan-spec emissions
V Common Rail Diesel Injection (D-4D)
X Atkinson cycle (typically also indicates a Hybrid engine, as Toyota only uses the Atkinson cycle with hybrids)
Z Supercharged

For Example•
4A-GE  4 - 4th Generation Engine In The A Engine FamilyA - The Engine Family it is inG - Wide-angle dual camshaftE - Electronically Fuel Injected•

22R-TEC  22 - 22nd Generation Engine In The R Engine FamilyR - The Engine Family it is inT - TurbochargedE - Electronically Fuel InjectedC - California Emission Controlled• Note: Toyota, in 1987, began assigning dual letter engine codes to some of the "engine family" categories in some engine lines, particularly six cylinder models. This can create potential confusion.

Eg. 1UZ-FE - This is not a supercharged, narrow angle, fuel injected U-series engine, but a narrow angle, fuel injected UZ-series engine. Confusion is easiest to avoid when using the dash to separate between the engine series and its own characteristics: for instance,
1UZ-FE rather than 1U-ZFE

I ran my swap with only one cat until recently. With only one cat i was getting a code but it was not effecting the way it ran at all. After i put in the second cat it ran exactly the samemwith no check engine light, the only difference is i lost a lot of top end power wen i put it in.  I found a company online that makes a device u plug in instead of the 2nd o2 and it sends the correct signal to the ecu so it thinks it has a cat and the o2 is working properly.  Once i get my truck refered and smog the cats are comming out and that device is going in.
Just my 2 cents. :)

Anyone have first hand experience with LC or Paradise cams/heads w/ a NA CA smog legal application?

Don't have room for a supercharger, but after talking w/ LC their aftermarket head should produce about the same power as a blower at 4psi for less $$$ (but not much less).

Does anyone know if the Vehicle's VIN# is stored in the ECM?

Hey guys need some help. I got a 2000 Tacoma with a 3rz (4x4) with the 2 coil set up. I'm swapping in a 3rz with the coil on the plugs out of a 2000 4 runner (2wd) I have the complete motor, harness and ecu buts its an automatic.   My tacoma is 5 speed. Could I use the 5 speed harness and ecu from my two coil 3rz and wire it up some how to run the 4 coils. Or do I have to buy a m/t harness and ecu that came from a coil on plug 3rz. Any help is appreciated.

My truck is a 1982 pickup, donor is a 1996 Taco. Been ready through pages of info, my head hurts. I have a complete Taco to strip,
Do I need the radiator?
Should I get the fuel tank from the Taco or maybe just fuel lines?
Will the crank from a manual trans accept the A340 torque converter?

What about a the a/c system? Anyone ever swap that into their old trucks, I mean if I can get it for free?

I did a 3rz into an 85 carb'd truck and my stock radiator works great, never gets hot and no mods were needed besides a custom lower hose. If the taco tank fits i would use it, i used the tank out of a second gen efi truck with the original pump amd lines from the efi truck.  Those are the only questions i have answers to.

I started with the A-pillar dash cross bar, and used the AC,Blower and heat boxes all from the Tacoma.

Did you have to cut the AC,Blower box any to make them fit? If you have any more picture I would like to see them.

Does anyone know if a 3.0 V6 3VZ flywheel is the same as the flywheel on the 3RZ?  The bolt pattern looks the same to me.  I know that Toyota reuses parts where ever they can.

I just finished tearing down a 3RZ that I got from a junk yard.  It's from an automatic.  That's why I'm looking for a flywheel.  They said they head might be cracked because there was coolant in the oil.  I found that the head gasket had leaked at cylinder #1.  I'm taking the head and block to a machine shop tomorrow to find out if it's rebuildable.  If someone could answer my flywheel question, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

The 3rz flywheel has raised letters on it that says 3rz.  The 2rz has raised letters that say 2rz as well - don't get the two confused.  The 3rz has more suface area for the clutch disk to ride on.

Thanks guys for the info on the flywheel!  My next challenge is a big one.  I have an IFS frame with no lift.  It seems that the only real solution to getting the 3RZ to fit into a non-lifted IFS frame is to use ChilKat's altered T100 2wd oil pan.  I've been wondering if bloggerunner's reversed front sum pan would fit?

BUDDERS

I'm pretty sure a 2RZ oil pan will bolt up too.....  I just can't remember if it's front or rear sump.

My '96 Tacoma service manual shows both the 2RZ and the 3RZ oil pans.  They are both front sump.  The 2RZ pan is boxier in shape.  I tried to post a copy of that page from the manual, but the system won't allow it until I have eleven postings.  Oh well.

Do I need the radiator?
Should I get the fuel tank from the Taco or maybe just fuel lines?

What about a the a/c system? Anyone ever swap that into their old trucks, I mean if I can get it for free?

1:You need the radiator that came in the truck you plan to drive (82'). You DO NOT need a larger one like BigMike has. I run the stock 85 one. With a BlackMagic E-Fan.

2:100% yes the other option that I like is cutting off the old mounting flanges for evap and the pump from the donor truck (96') and welding them into the 82' tank.

3:Yes, except the condenser.

Anyone have pictures of the fuel tank mods? My '82 tank looks to be an inch short for the the fuel pump assembly?

SFD4x4

I got a 2nd gen efi tank from I believe a 2wd short bed, it bolted up perfectly to my 83.  No mods needed and I have never been short on fuel.  Like others have said, you do not need to change your radiator.  I have had no problems with overheating with my stock 83 radiator.  I also used my 83 fan and fan clutch.
