very nice and i like how you work around your problem areas and find ways to make it custom.... without having to rework a bigger part.... you find the smaller things to make the bigger problems go away....
very nice bro.... keep it up. its coming along

i totally agree, you've got some very creative and economical ideas!!! i cant wait to see this badboy on the rocks!!!

No more updates right now....

The helmet is a basic one from Miller.

That exhaust was a killer - Seriously! Last night I think I got a case of "metal fume fever" from welding it up in the garage without the proper ventilation. I should of known better! I didn't notice anything odd when I was welding it, but several hours later it hit me. I had severe shortness of breathe and my throat was burning with every breath and got cold chills. I even was on the verge of going to the ER - Anyways after doing some searching online - I figured it must be "metal fume fever" and took a bunch of cold meds to try to releive the symptoms as it appears there is no real treatment for it other than not to inhale the fumes in the first place! Anyways, today I'm much better but still not feeling all that great. And honesty feel kinda stupid for welding on that exhaust inside the garage with the door closed!

I don't know Ricks reasoning here but I would have done it the same way he did it.  I have been Dyno-tuning motorcycles for 10 years and building custom exhaust pipes for race bikes in exactly the same fashion Rick built that section (except for the fumes sickness).  I can guarantee you that the piece he cut and turned (as it is called on motorcycles) will flow better than the same shaped piece bent up on a standard exhaust pipe bender.  It would need to be mandrel bent very carefully to match the quality of what Rick did...  I give him a big thumbs up for using this technique.  :yesnod:

Transportation is one issue (but I could have waited until it was a rolling chassis) and the other reason is the exhaust bender that my local muffler shop has really decreases the cross-section of the tubing alot and I'm sure with the amount of bends required to get around the front driveline and bellhousing, that they couldn't have gotten it right. Heck it took them two trys on my last toyota (quasimodo) to get the exhaust were I wanted it. They just didn't believe that the front axle / driveline moved as far as it did and I had to show them pictures of my front driveline self clearancing the exhaust on my previous toyota (4runner), so on their second try at it - I just stayed there and made sure they did what I wanted.

As you can see in this picture, the front driveline still might rub the exhaust. Its going to be tight!

Anyways, I didn't want to go through that again - and figured I'd just do it myself and get it right. Plus I figured (in my opinoin) that my cut and turned exhaust would flow atleast as good as what the muffler shop could do because I was very careful to debur & flatten every joint  for a nice fitting butt weld that would help prevent burn throughs.

Holy Exhaust Job... Looks like a pain, put looks sweet

ok cool that makes sense, im pretty lucky to have 2 excellent exhaust shops in my small town so i usually dont think twice about having them do work like that

chim

are you worried about the heat from the exhaust being so close to the trans? Are you going to wrap it or make some sort of heat shield?

DeadlyPeace

Great work Rick. Very nicely done.

I've never worried about the trans in my previous toyotas with a crossover pipe (7MGE & 3rz), plus the trans is a manual, so you should be able to run those hotter without issues as opposed to a Auto. Right now I'm more worried about heat getting into the cab through the floor boards. Thats seems to be a real issue with flat belly rigs where you creat a oven right under you - so I'm going to heat shield for that.

I'm thinking about exhaust wrapping - but I've heard that in the wetter climates (here in Oregon) that the wraps just hold in mosture and rot out the exhaust - so I'm still not sure yet. I can do that at any time in the future pretty easily also. but I'm going to buy some exhaust paint to try to protect the welds and clean up the look some.

Messed around with some color schemes over the weekend on the computer. I was planning on 100% Orange with Dark grey tube work and a Black chassis, But I think the white canvas top would bug me. So now I'm thinking about something like this with the SwayAway RaceRunner Lizard down the side.

better.....

Sorry - orange is going to be on it since I already bought the orange paint and I want this rig to be "bright" . I've never had a "loud" vehicle before and wanted to do something different.
