Yep  getting excited to see this motor in person. And even though it will use it still has about 30,000 miles on it less then my 20 R.  I will be taking this next week to clean up what I can down at home, and then about this time next week head up to Glenwood and do the climax of the swap. yes it totally helps to have connections and buddies like Mitchell and twisted and Glenn and 3rz to 22r swap (sorry haha). and all the other dudes willing for a helping hand. Thanks alot guys.

And yes about the 5.29s.  It's a big dream. But I was thinking about maybe doing some kind of locker? In the back? E locker, auto, :dunno: . Been browsing this subject, and read that auto lockers arnt  as bad/noticeable with longer wheelbases. But maybe I'm being "materialistic" and don't really even Need lockers. I don't know, I was just thinking if I'm going to make the jump to 5.29's, maybe I should save up the cash, And make it locker... :dunno:

Is this the 19 yrs old, thinking I need a supercharger, mind again? :hammerhead:

Yeah at least put an aussie locker in the rear.

Locker is the way to go bud. And trust me selectable is the way to go Ive had lock rites before and they were NASTY to say the least. Every once in awhile you think your diff exploded. Then yo think man i wish i had gone selectable.

I went with yukon zip lockers awsome product!

Supercharger? is unreasonable, but a locker is great think there is nothing that will help more on a trail than all four tires spining.

Ya The direction of the build isn't really a camper crawler, as cool as that sounds,  but a reliable expedition  rig.  So I can't imagine I'll be doing too much of your guy's level of wheeling,  but on trails non the less.  And for long peels of time I hope. And the Yukon zip locker?  Is that a cable engaging locker.?

4xChinook4

Never mind,  just checked em out. Not sure I want an air locker. The less steps there are the better. I think I would either go e locker. Just a switch relay and locker.  Or a cable locker.  Any experience with cable lockers

4xChinook4

There's no such thing as a cable locker is there?  Not with out an e locker to begin with huh?

I believe my  axel is from a 91 ifs. Truck, could you use cable engagement on an arb diff?

You can convert the elockers to cable actuated.

H8PVMNT

Yeah get something back there.  Maybe someone will hook you up on an e-locker.  I've seen them go reasonably priced.  Some kind of rear traction devise will save you lot of wear and tear and keep you out of most of the stucks you will get in an expedition vehicle.

I would  have to mod the 91 axel though right? To a Como date  an e locker

Yes. You would need to notch out where the motor shift arm is. Weld an extended gasket surface. And change the location of a few studs.

Motor shift arm?

Yeah. Get yourself an e-locker gasket it has a notch where the shifter arm moves to lock and unlock the diff. You can kind of see it here:

Well boys today's the day, I'll be out to pick up mitch 22r.

And the locker talk will probably happened down the road. Once I switch to 5.29. How's the experience  with and aussie locker? I get the fact it's an auto. But the reviews seem pretty good, do they act similar to an open diff when driving on the street. The only difference  I heard about really was the faint knocking noise when making tight turns. Like in a parkinglot. ? H8PVMNT  suggested it, have you had experience with these lockers bro.

4xChinook4

After some other research. I may go with arb. For an expedition  rig I'm sure having an air compressor  on board would really be the way to go for self dependant.

Still would like some input on the aussie though.

Over the years I have ran the lock rite, the detroit ez locker, full detroit locker and the aussie locker.  Of all the auto lockers I've ran the aussie is by far the smoothest operating.  You get a little click, click, click when you are in a turn  but very little ker-pow type stuff like the lock rite and the detroit.  The detroit is the strongest and the aussie is the smoothest.

That being said, I personally like the dependability and simplicity of an auto locker vs. a selectable.  Nearly every time I have been on an extended trip with someone with a selectable locker they have a time when the thing won't stay locked.  I have seen this with both the ARB and the OX locker.  I'm sure results vary depending on installation.  I know a ton of guys on here have no problems at all.  Toyota e-locker is the only exception I've been around and have never seen them fail.  I guess it all depends on your driving style and how much time you spend jockeying around in tight parking lots with sticky asphalt.  Auto lockers are a lot more noticeable in town driving than anywhere else.  If you are in town all the time I could see the benefit of a selectable for sure.  On dirt or even snow it's no big deal.  Lots of long highway is also no big deal.

For me I'd rather have something simple and automatic.  The auto lockers just aren't that bad do drive if you figure the quirks out. You kind of apply less throttle in a turn on pavement and let the coast side disengage and do it's job. Or if you get on it it peels like a spool.  Anything in between is what causes the "bucking" and harsh disengagement everyone complaint about.

We have gotten to the point that all we do now is carefully weld the rear and let it cool down really slowly after welding and slap an aussie up front.  Even in the front end you can barely tell the aussie is up there except for a few faint clicks and you have full traction.

If I could choose and I wasn't a cheapskate my ideal would be either the aussie or a detroit in the rear end and an aussie up front.

You have to choose based on your budget and what kind of driving you do.

Thanks bro. I was really just scared of the finicky character  of an auto. Like there is a big learning curve. And kind of taking the average driving day to day no longer fun. :dunno:

Check her out. Got my buddies  chevy c-10 1972, and went to pick her up. It's definitely  an 88 block. But the valve cover looks 82 to 84?? Reasons???

in that camper with its heavy butt I would seriously go Elocker.  I fried the motor on mine and got the Downey Cable locker kit just before the closed the doors. although after getting it in the mail and having to "fix" the crappy machining they did I think my sister could machine a block of aluminum better. but after working out the bugs I LOVE my cable locker :bumpinbutts:
