Abso fn lutely, step up my friend, pay someone to make up some decent mounts if you cant do it. Think bigger. You have the beginings to a really nice rig. I think if it was mine Id just walk around to get into it.Keep the cab sealed up,nice and dry and warm.Do what you have to, to smog it , a PO box or go back to stock, whatever you have to do to get it to pass smog. You have been very lucky to get a decent 35 year old truck and a decent 38 year old camper. Now pony up ,work or money, what ever will make you rig better.I like it or I wouldnt be giving you  :pokinit: .Check out Toyotamotorhomes.com/Nolan's_76_chinook. I have a 1980 4 wheel drive hilux and a '77 chinook,so you are farther along than me,but I like what you have done so far,but you have to take this project more seriously, you will be happy you did

Ya I'll probably  do the square tubing mounts, I just made my initial wood decision based on the factory blocks were wood. But I see what saying.  And yes I have seen Nolan's Chinook build, very top notch classy. and as far as emissions go I have some friends in higher elevation that I can probably register in their address. And by the way this is not the extent of the camper mounts. I will be welding this angle iron to the frame as well for more stability. and structure.

Thanks for taking so much interest bro. Cool to hear you have similar rigs. :yesnod:

I'll use my first post here to say the same I said on mud; this is a dream rig to me!
Looks like you're doing it some justice, keep it up.

Hey coat that wood in a thick slather of oil based paint, then it won't rot over time.  I officially want a chinook on a 1st gen 4x4 now.

I have a smog pump with brackets and a bit of the egr junk from my '81 22r if you want it.  Pretty sure it's the same stuff. Say like $10 plus shipping?

I would have a snap in vinyl closer made to close of the chinook camper part from the rest of the cab when you are using it for daily use.

BRO!! your a genius!  That's is a perfect idea, and very clean looking too. Right now I have some thin curtains from target to separate. (Well this is what I had orginally  on the old chinook. As you can tell now in the recent pictures with the new 80' cab the rear is still in tactic.) But I'm really digging the button vinyl separator. Down the road of coarse. Plenty of a list with more priorities .  For now.

Is the wood only a spacer?
Yes, and no. It gives the height(spacing) required for the Chinook overhang to clear cab. And also bears the weight of the Chinook itself, but I do plan on some welding from the angle iron to frame to help with camper sway and weight distribution.

I hope this makes sense. ???

Oh man thanks  bro!  Don't worry about just yet.  I may have a friend up in the hills, going to try that registration above 9000ft trick first. Seems the easiest for now.  Just know If this doesn't work,  THEN I will pm you about the smog stuff .

Thanks again bro.  :)

If you end up only using the wood for the weight in compression, with steel for movement (criss-cross); the wood should be fine.

We have used these ledger board pucks for minor body lift spacers.  They work well and don't deteriorate over time.
I love both these idea s. Going with the wood in oil based paint for now.  But I will consider these if my confidence doesn't stay with the wood. Thanks guys.  :) . To be honest  I like these ideas more then square tubing. Better vibration dampening. [emoji106]

The hockey pucks are a good idea. My dad had used them for years for body lifts. They haven't rotted and they've been in the truck for 29+ years

Anyway here's what new. Talk to a buddy of mine in the hills and I pretty  much  have a county to register in without needing smog   so for now that's in the clear.  And with many other distractions.  I'm past the hump  of installing the angle iron body support, with an 1 & 3/16" additional body lift. And man am I glad I did it!! Without something strait (angle iron) right there to compare to, you never would have known how bowed the flooring was!! Due to the inset from outside shell/frame weight to the original floor mounting location onto the chassis. Between the center of angle iron and center of chinook floor (underside) I could fit my complete 4  fingers. But once I tightened my 5/8" x 6" bolts it sucked her back to flat. :) I have the 2 rear angle iron set. And the front 1 is there but just needs the be tied in. Here's some dark pictures I'll post clearer ones tomorrow.
I'll most likely  paint the iron itself aswell now that I have it in.

I have read that a lot of people replace the floors in their chinooks with thicker plywood because of this problem.

Seems like I got them for like $2.00 each at a contractor supply place a few years back.

so im sticking with the wood for now. im sure it'll do just fine ESPECIALLY with the additional welds of angle iron to frame.. like mentioned earlier by someone, it's  just weight bearing, no "sway weight". and i finished bolting her down, but no pictures. would have got em taken but......caught up talking for hours and researching realizing something with my plan for emissions and registration.

call me a tool or what have you, but once i realized the " slight spice of illegal-ness" in this recipe i started to feel a tad guilty and figured this wasn't a "spice" i wanted in this build, im looking for another route. :hammer: even though my engine is actually burning WELL BELOW the limit. actually very clean. (had her tested at my local auto clinic, unfortunately that doesn't hold any cred with the actual DMV  :headshake: obviously not with the visual )  so with talking with the Emissions referee in person for some time. he said i could either

1. put on old carb emissions junk. and retro fit to weber  since this would be a step in wrong direction. and very likely Not actually pass the real emissions. :screwy: (still open to it though if i can be convinced otherwise)

2. fuel inject current motor( GM TBI, 22re throttle body onto hybrid) or other ...

3. complete motor swap. (22re, 22ret, 3rz, 5vz, 7mgte)

so what do ya'll think.  obviously option #3 is probably the most $$$ . and dont get me wrong i  my motor, but.... i just need some educated opinions  :therethere:

OM 617 is a Mercedes straight 6 3.0 liter turbo diesel.

I would say go with the 3rz. You'll be glad you did every time you drive it.

what is that tank to the left of the mount?  It looks like the tank mount is delaminating.
Or is it a propane bottle sitting on a piece of plywood?
I have helped part out 3 toyota motor homes.  They did some crazy stuff as far as frame extensions with less than engineered mounts.

Unless you find an early celica EFI head i don't think you would be able to do EFI on a 20r.  EFI block had a different shaped piston if I recall correctly
