what is that tank to the left of the mount?  It looks like the tank mount is delaminating.
Or is it a propane bottle sitting on a piece of plywood?
I have helped part out 3 toyota motor homes.  They did some crazy stuff as far as frame extensions with less than engineered mounts.

edit:  Unless you find an early celica EFI head i don't think you would be able to do EFI on a 20r.  EFI block had a different shaped piston if I recall correctly
thats my 20 lb propane tank. sitting on on some plywood, with an 1/8" sheet of masonite on it (painted). so it not delamination, its just the wood on wood set up. for a propane tank platform.

yes i know about the differences in heads and square runners going into my circle head ports and all that jazz.  :smack: but still would like to see it all for myself, and see maybe, just maybe, with some side by side comparisons at the yard and with some welding of coarse, i could fab up a throttle body to fit.  :dunno: . or at the very least just get some good brain storming time to see what i can do.

i would like to keep my motor with the money put into her already, plus with future soon to be hybrid  always wanted on of these motors

i'm pretty happy with the power she puts out right now. its not much but with the LC street cam i have and the plan for a 22r block. for a hybrid. i know i would really love her. especially if i can EFI her for smog. this is my most desired option, a unique motor for a unique build

motor swap would be next best.

i got the LC pro street cam for low end, loved it on my last rig., just about to finish up my hybrid, like the camper you got going.

That's the "pro torquer cam" now right?

I've got the street performer cam now (not yet installed ), got it for drivability and also has improved torque so it's a 'win win' mild lift cam in my mind.

What y'all think? fuel injecting the hybrid build? Or swap to 22re?

MAYBE  to 3rz, I say MAYBE because this swap is BIG money for my budget. &  because all the money spent for building my 20r can be swapped to a 22re. Cam, header, exhaust. Only thing can't be swapped would be weber carb (obviously). The reason I lean to this would be cost effective and no money wasted. Keep in mind this comes from a guy who actually likes the power of a stock 20r with a weber and header & exhaust.  :dunno:

Not sure exact cam. They changed the name since I bought 6 years ago.  Use your existing propane tank and run propane. Do they even make a fuel injection setup to bolt to 20r head?

Yes they did, but only on the celica s from the years with 20r ' s in them. Which would be like finding a needle in a hay stack... so it would have to be fabrication. And no thanks on the propain, the only reason I'm doing this is to pass emissions, with the obvious Benefits from EFI. Besides I don't really need pane since I'm not really crawling.. gas is just fine with me.

A guy on IH8MUD did a GM TBI on a 20r.  You can use a spread bore carb adapter. I don't particularly like GM TBI myself but I know a bunch of guys have real good success with it. I actually have a holley manifold to put a spread bore carb on a 20r head.  That would probably work. It's at my buddy Don's in Lolo.

Yes I have heard of the GM TBI have a guy little bit closer to me than Lolo that already has one fitted up to a 20 R motor. however he has not had it cleared for smogged since he was never planning on driving it on the street. not saying that it won't just makes me a little bit skeptical about trying it. his initial asking price for this GM TBI already set up to 20 R is $600... maybe a tad bit high. :dunno: This does seem like a good option though he has a video of it on YouTube.

Yeah Hey immortal, I really would like your input on this decision I'm going to be making. Giving you and I have both driven the same trucks 80 s with the 20 R and with you being one step ahead of me with the EFI swap already done on your first gen. You did like your 20r right? I know you've mentioned this in your own build-up thread but if you could just give me a quick rundown of what you felt between your 20 R  and your 22re?  your 20 are have the stock carb and the stock exhaust correct? put a header on your re right? Just give it to me straight how did you feel between differences in all aspects with drivability between the motors. I would love it if you could help me out bro.

Basically convince me bro, because I'm really thinking this route.   Would you do it over again? Or do you think you would have saved your money for the 3rz and gone through the trouble of that swap instead?

I just went from a 22re to a 3rz.  There is really no comparison in performance.  The 3rz runs better in every way.  That being said, motor swaps always leave "unfinished" things in my case.  The wiring is kinda a pain.  If you have the patience to do the swap right, then I say there is no real question.

ya i understand... how much did your swap end up costing you? im trying to get by as cheap as possible. Since i was happy with my 20r power, and this was more of a getting caught of guard with this emissions crud.

and i get it, a 3rz of 3.4 would be the bees knees. but not really looking for an all in swap just yet. unless some miracle happens and i can do one of these swaps for dirt cheap. $700 or less. im looking for 22re swap for $600 or less.  :help:

Im guessing mine cost close to 2k.  That is alot, but I see tons of people spending 1000-2500+ rebuilding 22re's.  Just doesn't add up for that price.  As for saving money, Id just find a doner truck with a 22re for 700 bucks, part the truck out and use the engine/harness.

I spent $3500 on my 22re in my 4runner... For you at this point, I would stick to the hybrid build, cheap, easy, reliable and a blast to drive! If i ever pull the hybrid out of my 78 it will be getting a JDM 20v 4age blacktop powerplant and the hybrid will go into my 85 or my 93.

going to the yota yard tomorrow to really study 22re vs 20r heads and intakes, to see how do-able. .....

If you know someone who can TIG aluminum then adapting the 22re manifold onto the 20r flange is not very hard. I will be building a full custom intake manifold for mine, 3.5'' upper plenum equipped with 1200cc PTE injectors, 4 direct port watermeth injectors and NOS ports to top it off... Should put down some power with a 60mm turbo

If you really want to EFI the 20r then I could get you a manifold built. Wouldn't be too much $$$ either.

Have to talk to my partner in crime this evening as he is MUCH better at aluminum welding than I am. I'd imagine itd be in the $4-500 range including all materials.

OK let me know what the partner in crime says, I'm not looking  for the NOS imports. Or anything fancy  just what's needed for EFI on a 20r .

Efi on a 20r/22r hybrid would be badass. The 20r heads flow better than the 22r/re and the added compression from hybrid would really help. I think if you could manage to do that that would be the ticket you already got half the parts and I don't know anyone that has done that yet it would be badass. Now on my 20r it was pretty much stock except I did have a webber. It was guttless but I did have all the smog stuff hooked up to so I'm sure that didn't help me much in the power department. I love my 22re. The swap was easy relitivly cheap and I love being able to turn the key and have the motor run every time I turn it. Decent power upgrade I haven't dynoed my motor but a stock 22re makes like 115-120 Hp at the flywheel and I would guess mine probably makes 150  :dunno: now compared to a 20r that's a pretty big difference. No matter what was you choose to go I vote for some kinda EFI swap. Especially living in the mountains big changes in elevation really effect a carberator

Hey that's  pretty tight bro. Now I wonder about  all the vacuum lines I'll have to plumb  in from scratch. ??? And emissions lines. What exactly is there involved for this with a 22re. EGR vavle? no smog pump right?

My 86 22RE doesn't have a smog pump (CA version even)

I can only speak for the early 22re's 85-87 but all there is for emissions is a egr valve, O2 sensor, and some models have air injection. That's it pretty simple to plumb the lines except the egr valve is different the 22re egr may not bolt up the the 20r head properly might have to get custom or just completely get rid of the egr

Ya ok that's what I was afraid of.... twisted can you see if this possible with your custom manifold? Before I buy? Please.

I found I still have old egr. So if it is possible I could maybe use a 20r egr with the efi emissions? :dunno: and same with air injection. But I feel this should easy because  it goes strait to the 22re plenum  right?
