81 Trekker Build
« on: Dec 04, 2011, 04:24:10 AM »
not really new to the forum but haven't posted much of my trekker on here so here is go--
81 Trekker, got it about 4 years ago-
started with this;

first thing was a marlin rear bumper:

three layers of carpet contributed to the normal first gen floor panels turning to crap;

rear bumper was converted to a rear swing out:

did the usual too high of lift,

cedar tree trail:

33's evolved to 35's:

aussies front and rear with 5.29's

cage work:

rattle canned to desert tan:

started bobbing it a few weeks ago:

fiber glass work isn't perfect but it will just hit a tree some time:

have an extra top off an old Sky's offroad Trekker to practice bobbling the top with:

hopefully in a few weeks it will look like this:

Coming down Mini Rubicon at TSF
i met the guy that used to live in oregon city who had skys trekker
This top is off that Trekker.  the guy in OC actually sold my trekker to the guy I bought it from so that he could get the Sky's Trekker...it ended up getting parted out.

got some time to get the tail lights mounted:
went with a piece of diamond plate to mount the lights so it would give me the option to change to round lights or single lights down the road and not have to do a ton of fiberglass work again, just replace the aluminum:

cleaned up the lower portion of the rear valance and cut holes for frame mounted bumper brackets:

Nice truck.  A trekker would be cool to own.

That cedar log trail always makes me laugh.  One of my high school buddies was the first one to dig out from under the log enough to squeeze a truck under.  At that time it was kind of outlaw and mainly a dirt bike trail.  Now it's in Toyota ads.

yep, cedar tree trail has seen some trucks that shouldn't be one it..wheel with some guys from church that have suburbans that do 90 point turns, about fall asleep waiting for them :sleepy:

they come up every once in a while.  there are 3 of them local to me.  A friend of mine has been restoring his for the last several years.
I just traded an extra back half for parts:

kind of which I kept it but don't have a ton of room for big stuff.  thought about using it to make a 2WD Trekker.

like the build!
Thanks...

thanks, always good to hear from a fellow round eye owner.. :beerchug:

This is mod from last summer..
I really would love to have a set of true suspensions seats some day, like PRP's but way out of my budget for now so I picked up these things at a pick and pull 50% sale this summer:
Seat version 4.0:
Late 80's Prelude with 60k on the clock:D

The driver side had adjustable side bolsters and lumbar support.
I used 3/8" 1.25x1.25" angle and just bent the front mounts to a 90* and was able to use existing holes:

Full plate across the bottom (just noticed that I need to finish a weld on my s slider):

For the outside corner I tied it into the seat belt lower mount, though I might have to rethink this mounts..suggestions welcome:

Ideally some day I would like to make a new subframe for the seat mounts but this should do for.
Trucks seem to disappear on a semi regular basis around Portland..I have a couple of other methods to slow down/deter Thieves but thought since  my friend Paul gave me a Grant Steering wheel out of a truck he was parting out :
I would pick up a Grant Removal Mount.  Cheapest place I found was from Jegs. Ordered on a  Friday, got here on a (tuesday) awesome service IMO.   About $50 lower than Auto Zone and $90 cheaper than Grant's List price of $215 :eeek:

Put the Grant Removeable steering wheel security thing in :

Put the key in, a slight turn to the left and pop off the steering wheel:

Put the Red 'can't drive this one' warning in:

I think this will be a great way to help me keep my truck around...

Rolled the truck out a few days ago to see what the bed bob looked like, not perfect but it will do..

Got a little time to work on the top today.
The bottom of the top had a crap load of butyl tape/adhesive still:

Soft ball anyone?

Got the windows out,

Built a frame out of 1x2 strips to help steady the top and keep it the right width:

Started the cuts:

The framework seems to be doing it's job.
I can flip it over now, not at flimsy as it would be with out it.
Just have to undo a few screws and can slide it forward...
Hopefully be able to make the real cut tomorrow and maybe start layer of glass but with Christmas this weekend have a lot of misc BS to take care of..

not much progress the last few weeks.
I hit the local pick -n- pull and picked up a set of sliding windows:

Cut the frame down on one and did a test fit, nice to find that the frame matching the existing cut out on part of the top:

picked up some junk to start on new bumper mounts, also scored some cool thingys to make light mounts out of:

$14 for scrap.. Price went up a little but it should clean up nicely.

Finally got off my fat butt and finished cutting the top. A little to wet and chilly to start the fiberglass

Used 550 cord for a straight edge

Cut came out Good, the overlap method worked like a charm

Added some Bracing underneath, will Glass the top first

Window opening will end up around 36"

I will graph a piece from the old Sky's Trekker Top to get the correct opening up front for thewindow frame. The wood strips on the top are temporary until I can get the fiberglass done.
