Well heres my dilemma.... Im just saving as much money as I can in order to get my engine put in ect..... Well as most know I have my 3.0 V6 and im pretty sure I have all the parts I need but I need to have it rebuilt.... Now would it be cheaper to just buy a rebuilt 22RE and a new transmission for it? Or should I pay to have the 3.0 rebuilt and hope that the transmission that I got with the truck (auto) works? Any help or comments would really be appreciated.... Im confused as to what to do.... Keep in mind I'm trying to get the best value for my buck.... thanks guys... Gonzo

i would say best "value" for your buck is going to be 22re and new tranny. thats what i would do if i was in your shoes.

DONT rebuild the 3.0! i started to rebuild one and after $500 on the top end it was gonna be another $900 for the bottom. plus they suck fuel like its going outta style. since you have the engine out sell it for a few hundred bucks and use that money plus what you got to swap in a better motor. be patient and find a good deal on a 3rz or 3.4 and go that route. believe me you will just keep dumping $$$ into that 3.0

looks good so far though

GONZO97

My only concern is putting it in... is it a "b" to get everything to fit properly, mounts wiring harness ect.???

A 22re will barely move that pig.  The V6 wheezed its way around also but a lot better than an re will.  I would look for a low mileage 3.0, and swap it in.  If you have the time and money do a 3.4 swap.

Well thats the issue im a college student working part time and trying to build this truck as much as possible so money is just a matter of saving right now as for time i have time since i do have a car that i DD. Now i used to have a 3.4 in my previous runner and loved the way it ran and it didnt do too bad on MPG either... I spoke with my dads friend and he mentioned doing a 4.3 swap... Any thoughts on that? and 88pathy you attend Fresno State? I saw your rig in the Parking lot today out by Kremen

talk to jim putney. he is the man. He will tell you what you need to do. I have a swapped 22re in my truck. It had a 3.0 in it...... i wish it wasnt. I am going to put a 3.0 back in it. They arent a bad motor. Trust me just call him and tell him your situation.

what!
Cody, you actually like the 3.0s

I did at one time.

I say do a 22re swap before another 3.0

but think about somethin with a bit more power.

How shot is the 3slow? tranny and everything could turn into a mess i just put new 3sloxs back in .Just put one in think it has a broke spring tearn it back down tommorrow

yota_krawler

i didnt say i like em, i just dont mind them. a 3.4 is better but they have problems too......

I have nothing against the 3.0 im just wondering what is going to be more affordable and workout better in the end.... when it comes to doing it right I am not afraid to spend a little extra money to get it done right but im not going to spend more if it isnt worth it... the gamble is if my automatic transmission is any good i know i can get the engine rebuilt and itll run just fine for what im going to use it for but if the tranny is bad then idk what would be the best way to go about it... even if the best thing is to buy new engine and tranny together then i will so that way its done right the first time.

and lucky 7 to be honest i dont know exactly how bad it is... it was out when i got it so i had no way of doing a compression test so i started taking it apart and took the heads to a buddy of mine and put them in his parts washer when we took them out he said the heads looked burned up idk how credible his word is but thats what he told me... i can post pictures of the pistons maybe thatll give everyone a better idea of what im working with... because if i dont have it machined i could spend 400 on a rebuild kit and start putting it back together but im not sure how bad the heads or block actually is

I don't know if it's an option but I vote 3.4. With the cost of getting a motor rebuilt and any other things, swaps are pretty comparable especially when you consider say 22r to an re, or a 3.0 to a 3.4. I'd say if this isn't your daily, keep an eye out for one & save while you wait  :twocents:

I know it would cost more, but I personally think the upgrade would be worth it. A 22re would be great, but I know how heavy those 4runners are and I think you might get sick of the lack of power in a heavier vehicle. I had a 92 runner with a 3.0, and now I've got an 84 w/22r, and I'd say I've got about the same power to weight aside from be being able to pull hills faster in the runner. I would not want a 4cyl in a 2nd gen runner unless it was a 3rz.

Also wouldn't he have to rework his harness for an re? I've never done the swap but I would think a 3.0 to 3.4 would be easier than 3.0 to 22re. As far as cost, I'm no motor specialist so I had mine built, spent around 1300 after all said and done w/warranty and everything. My friend is doing a 3.4 swap from a 22r, and he's gotten everything for the swap, motor, harness, ecu, tank, cluster and bell housing to fit into his 84' for 2k total including shipping. To me that sounds worth it, but again that's just me.

i would say get a low mileage 3.0 just to get it moving. then do a 5 speed swap later.

I've went trough 3 motors 2 tranny's the 3.4 swap is great with a donner vehicle.but wait it out and out and search 4 a motor i just sold one for 150 bucks that needed a headgasket but was good.Bought one 4 350 think it has a broke spring since i have a dead cylinder i hope :hammerhead:

GONZO97

see i hear what everyone is saying and i keep leaning towards the 3.4 i just need to find one.... the issue is i have that auto tranny no clue if it works at all and secondly if i were to do 3.4 how hard would it be to change the runner over to manuel?
