So updates.

4runner:  i added a capacitor to my stereo system.  Now my lights don't flash to the beat. Lol.

On the dodge.  I have changed oil/filters.   Rotated fuel pin.  Turned star wheel one rotation and cut muffler off so its 3" all the way out insteas of necking down to 2.5"

Dingman.

I let my buddy drive so i could try and get a sound clip.

Welp blew out another power steering pump on the 4runner this weekend.

Do you guys think its just because it was a crappy oriley's pump.  Or just maybe too much stress on the pump while wheeling?  I wasnt even doing anything difficult when it went out.

The first one blew out when i hit rev limiter at full lock driving out of lilbuddy's driveway at his cabin in the snow.  This one i got high center'd on my skid plate and was working the wheel back and forth for a few good minutes.  :dunno:

I know i read its a good idea to clean the screen out somehow on the resivor since you reuse it.  i did not do last time because i didnt know.  Possible reason for early failure?

:dunno:  any thoughts?

I blew a couple on my tacoma using aftermarket pumps they are garbage haven't had any problems with the toyota pump. blew one while snow wheeling moving it back and forth and another one while just normal wheeling. What if you add a cooler inline with the system help keep the temp down maybe help them last a little longer.

an inline cooler with a small fan would be ideal. they get hot. and being as our PS systems use ATF, an AT Cooler would work.

Nope man, haven't done anything to the 4runner for a while.  Been driving it a little bit more around town cause i get tired of seeing it parked, but it hasn't seen dirt in awhile.

Honestly, id like to go take it somewhere, but been more caught up with school, work, and other things than i have with my toyota.  Im just kind of burnt out on it, don't really want to go play with it because i don't want to spend the money or time to work on it later.

greenjacob

i hear that not wanting to work on it. im waiting for my marlin dif to come in the mail now. a nother set of 5.29 bit the dust for me! its allmost time for some snow runs!

So im pretty sure my alternator is going out, or is dead.
All i know is i noticed my gauge was lower than normal at idle and when i woiuld rev the motor up the voltage gauge would not rise with the rpm's like it always has.

Another sign i think, which may or may not be more accurate is, i have a digital capactior for my stereo system, and it has a display that tells me the volts/amps, whatever unit i am not sure. Usually it is above 12v i believe, and now while idleing, with no electronics on it has 10-11volts, barely increases if i rev the motor.  :(

Is this a sign it is failing, or in fact dead?

What to do???????

Direct OEM replacement from autozone/orileys?    $127 bucks  :ouch:

Something like this instead?   Would be about the same price, possibly a little more since i don't have a core unles i went to pick n pull

Or do people rebuild their alternator's like they do with their starters?

IronClad

ive got one laying around if you want to borrow it to see about fitment issues

Man that is crazy to see the side by side just to realize how small most the stuff is on the trucks. i don't think you would regret doing the swap though

Dingman.

So i ended up getting a replacement alternator from oriley's today.
Pulled my alternator off and it looked to be a replacement already anyways, (i wouldn't know for sure because i bought the motor used with 130,000 miles on it)
Got one for a 99 4runner instead of a 99 tacoma.  According to the website the 4runner is supposedly 80 amp where the tacoma one is 70 amp.  I don't know how much of a difference that really is, but the new one was a little bigger than the old alternator.

Anyways lifetime warranty and its working awesome now.  Hopefully gonna go see some snow this weekend!  :booya:

Just went and got these cooper atp tires put on my dodge.   They are really nice riding and grip really well in my opinion.  Especially since it was pouring rain on the way home.
