Make sure if you are buying a 14bolt and plan on putting new bearings in it, to not buy an 84-85 axle.

Just found out i have an 84' tonight and the damn pinion support bearing is not the same as any of the others.
(Stole this picture that i found on a different forum just trying to find a bearing that would work.)

The left bearing is the weird bearing in the 84-85 axle while the bearing on the right side is the more common one.

So i guess as of right now, i need to determine if my bearing is still good and reuseable, find a  bearing (the only bearing i could find was $50 and it was a questionable website), or just go buy another 14 bolt.   :tantrum:  :blah: :blah: :blah: :blah:

What pisses me off is i never heard the 84-85 was a problem year, eventhough i tried to read up on axles befofre i got one.
I guess the only way to tell is to pop the cover off and look just fyi.
Just letting you all know so you don't waste money like i possibly have.

What are the bearing numbers?
If you see it, its for sale.

Im going to make some calls at work to our suppliers and see what they say.  Ill find out what to do today.

Dingman.

Cool.  Called our supplier and he said that they nobody makes that bearing anymore and i basically have a boat anchor housing.

Anyways...  Guy on pirate has a new full spool for a $150 i was going to buy but i am unsure now.
I have a few choices...  I guess i will inspect that bearing closer and either reuse it, pull it out and not run it, or go get another 14bolt.

I was planning on replacimg every bearing in that rear axle because they were not the greatest.  Am i making too big of a deal over this pinion support bearing?'

Because if i am going to reuse it, i might as well be cheap amd pass on the spool and just weld it.
Or i go to the junkyard and get another axle that isnt 84-85' and just run used wheel bearings and whatnot

(My axle sat dissembled so there was some surface rust on stuff.  So i planned on all new wheel/ diff bearings and whatnot

Dingman.

Dont know yet.   I need to inspect that bearing closely and see if it is good or bad.  I want to put all new bearings so i know its new, and with my track record you know why.

If i didnt have this axle i would just buy this new spool off pirate and a instlal kit and gears and be on my way.
However in my mind it is janky reusing one bearing when the rest are replaced.  So if im going to do janky :pokinit: ifeel like i might as well weld it and  save money and i am against welding diffs in my rig.

Then the other thing is the axle came with 4.56 so i dont know if i can get 5.38's.  For some reason i feel like i have only seen 5.38 thick gears for a 4.10 and down carrier.

I dont know

1985CRAWLER

yea if that bearing is the stocker from 84-85 i wouldnt run it, just if everything else is new you know thats gonna be the weak point.

yea id look into that, shouldnt the carriers be the same or are they different?

would be a pain to get another 14 bolt now.

welded diffs are sketch but they work until the weld gives way,a spool is alot stronger imo.

Dingman.

The carrier break is 4.10 and down am 4.56 and up, i believe i need a 4.10

zippo

I called a bearing place I use a lot for ya. They have almost everything.  Everything but that bearing.
If you see it, its for sale.

Dingman.

Thanks anyways i appreciate it.  I looked online at a bearing place in chico and they didn't have anything either.

zippo

You could always machine the housing.
If you see it, its for sale.

Dingman.

possibly..

It is hard to see but i think the bearing still looks good.

Concerns me though because THIS is what i am working with.. the axle was stored taken apart.  I KNOW that.

zippo

Side bearings look good two. :-p
If you see it, its for sale.

Dingman.

Yea... that will definitely need new bearings.

I think that pinion support bearing looks good for the most part. i honestly thought it was new when i started removing the oil/grease on it.
I would just prefer a new bearing.  Honestly how much does that bearing even matter?  By the size of it i bet it doesn't "support" the bearing "that" much.

Like i said, i bought the axle off a guy in town.  i know he had it torn apart because he had to find all the parts before i bought it.  the axle itself doesn't seem that bad/rusty, but other things like that carrier bearing/pinion are rusted so it makes me wonder..  That pinion support bearing i posted looks damn good for a used bearing.  Im thinking about running it.

Dingman.

I think i am going to buy this spool off of pirate.  it is a new yukon spool someone bought and never used.  Said it would work for thick 5.38's, so it is a 4.10 carrier.   Guy wants $150 shipped.  that is $100 cheaper than i can get a new one for at cost.

My buddy said he thinks he has another housing for me if i want to drive a couple hrs to get it.  Then i can decide if i want to just run my housing or find a newer one.. but i read somewhere people were saying the 84-85' axle has different length shafts compared to the other ones.   So i don't really want to make the drive if it is going to be a PITA to get shafts for it.  In that case i would prob perfer to just go buy a whole complete axle from the junkyard i guess.

1985CRAWLER

aw ,man sounds like a cluster.

that bearing looks good, yea the cheapest i found for those part numbers was around 50$ to 60$, little much for a carrier bearing.

Dingman.

wheres the build up on your tacoma?
I got your message the other day, and no i don;t know anybody who gets decent deals on lifts btw..

Dingman.

So i bought that spool off pirate for $150.  Guy said he would ship it today.

Also bought the rear disc brake  brackets for the 14bolt for $50 today from my boss.

Think i might order my gears/install kit tomorrow, but i might wait until next week

Dingman.

got my gears and install kit, disc brake brakets/hardware, and spool will be here monday.
I just need to make a flange and find some time to install it all.

Dingman.

Waiting to be installed:

Started making my flange today.
