So I finally had to part with my 82' PU and i'm excited to start fresh again (kinda)

Here's what we're working with,

85' 4runner
22RE
W56
Stock T-case
5.29's, Lockrite in the front, Open rear.
5" MISC lift
36" swamper radials
Strait body few dings here and there.. nothing major.
Engine seems to run strong has a recent full rebuild.
Comes with a spare hood, fenders, doors, 2 thirds (5.29 welded,4.10 open)
And a set of stock 2.28 dual cases (not yet installed)

Has some booger welds that'll have to be handled, blown rear seal on the driver side axle. Just a few small things.

I've already started my search for parts so if you guys have anything for sale let me know, i'll be looking for the following

30 spline longs
Hysteer
Springs (havn't decided which way im going to with this yet)  possible Marlin 4" or something similar.
Locker for the rear
Disc Brakes for the rear
Winch 8K min.
Drivershafts once I install the duals.
Gusset kit for the front.
Power steering, maybe tapped for hydro assist.
37's, MAYBE 40's....
A/C parts, YES! running air conditioning in this mofo.

I plan on this being a weekend warrior for now, something I can load the family up in and just hit the trail for a weekend and come back home. Obviously want it to be capable as well, gonna be a big jump from what I had but it's all good. I remember the good ol' days w/ 31's open f/r and hittin it hard!

So help a brotha out, what shall we call this piece??!

John Doe

Well I found some 3" allpro fronts I am using up front. and marlin 4" out back. I would defiantly keep the 1" difference given the weight of the top and rear passengers. From what I understand the TG 3" springs ride real high.

John Doe, you do make a valid point that not many people know about.

The weight difference in a 4Runner is about 1"  so if you plan on keeping it level you'll want to install a spring that is 1" taller in the front than in the back.

Ahh another build up thread.  Looks good man.  I'm glad I was able to help find a home for the 82 and that you got a 4Runner.  Your plans for you build are nearly identical to what I've done on my last few toyota builds.  I've had good luck with all that stuff (except for springs).  Are you planning on building a interior cage to keep the family safe?  After my last few rolls I'm not taking any chances now.

Oh IMO i'd do 4" f/r, maybe a 1" block in the rear if you need it, and cut out for 40's.  That way you won't be so far from where you were before and I'd go with IROKS because they are the lightest 40 I've found.  The 39.5 iroks are the same weight as my 35 toyo's on my tacoma. Kinda crazy but just some food for though.

Shamb

gotrocks, keep the idea's coming bro!  seriously..

The ONLY reason why i'm hesitant with 40's is because of the engine.. I'll need to cruise it at highway speed and through the steep mountains.

Me and Kellert actually talked about the Iroks, I heard him mention that the IROK's where one of the lightest which suprised me!
I MIGHT got IROKs......... again... as a possible DD I know these tires will wear out quick so i'm also looking for longevity of the tread.

Interior cage is a definent YES, especially since we'll have our daughter in the rig this time... I don't plan on getting crazy but it's always better to be safe then sorry.

I'm going to keep to a strict budget this time as well which I didn't do at all last time around and ended up spending more then I should have so i'll be looking highly into priceing and getting the best bang for my buck.

Stay Tuned!  Hope to have the progress starting soon.

Tomorrow i'll be pulling both rear axle shafts to get the bearings pulled and replaced along with the seals.

Oh and a weight comparison on tires for you.

Toyo Open Country MT's
35X13.50R15LT           83 lbs
37X14.50R15LT           92 lbs

Interco IROK
37X14.00-15LT           69 lbs
39.5X13.50-15LT        76 lbs.
14/42-15LT                95 lbs.

Goodyear MTR
37X12.5R15               67 lbs.
40X13.5R17               93 lbs

BFG MT KM2
37X12.5R17              72 lbs.

This is all I could find on the BFG and Goodyear tires.

I have been driving on 37's with a 4 cyl. a few years now and I'll admit it is not exactly desirable but if from the weight that you can see that most of teh 37's are you can just get the 39.5 irok and have about the same weight.  The IROK's are cheaper and if you do burn them down faster you can just buy another set.  In all reality how much will  you be driving the truck on the road.  I'm willing to guess that you will probably not even drive it enough to warrant needing to replace your tires before your ready to build/buy another rig.

Yeah I kinda guessed that from your avatar on PBB of Clark at wally world.  Its one of my families favorite movies as well.  We're always quoting lines from National Lampoons movies and we watch the Christmas one every year because its tradition.

from what i hear those tg 3" springs suck, they are alot stiffer and actually sat higher than the 5" on a buddies exo'd runner

Did you mean you need a 1" taller lift spring in the rear, as in 3" FRONT / 4" REAR to sit level?

Yea that's what I meant,   I over look the obvious when typing sometimes.

So today's progress included spending $300 on new bearing and seals for the rear end. The old bearing were completely shot and the driverside seal blew out on the trip from Oregon.. I think that had something to do with the bearing failure as well but you could tell they had probably never been replaced.

I had a few issues getting rear seals for the 4runner and thought i'd pass on something that MIGHT be obvious to some but was kind of a PITA for me. The outer seal's on the rear axle are actually "Inner seals"  i'm not sure what they're using to reference as "Inner" because I would typically use the center of the axle as the center and the end of the axle tubing as outer.. but long story short... If you ever need to replace those seals ask for the inner rear axle seal and you'll get what your looking for. Other wise you'll end up with a much smaller seal that wont do you much good.
I kept the part number for anyone that needs to refrence it.

Brought the truck home today, cleaned it up a little bit. Washed off all the gear oil that was on the driver side.

Probably be purchasing a new welder, chop saw and a few other misc things hopefully tomorrow along with trying to find a catalytic converter to get it smogged and switched over to CA.
