How short is that rear driveline going to be? Are you going to use a CV back there?
Colorado...its where the cool kids live

Yes - I'm planning on building a CV rear shaft, also.

The distance between the pinoin flange and T-Case flange at full compression is:
Front 25 1/4"
Rear 26 3/4"

If I built the drive shafts to the correct length (24.75 fully compressed) - I should be able to swap them front to rear! Well thats the plan but I haven'y cycled the rear yet to see if it doable. If its not - I will just make/buy a driveline spacer so it will work.

It's all about interchangeability!  :grad:

Looked shorter in the pictures, anyways good plan. Any reason for running coil overs and not air shocks?

I wanted the dual spring rate and remote reservior capablities which AirShocks don't have. Got to remember that this is not just a rockcrawler - but a general use 4wd which includes: Snow, Sand, Rocks, Mud, Trails, Prerunning......

Although - I might have to run airshocks in the rear because they are more compact.

No, my own private shop with more room than a small two car garage, so I could actually have some real equipment.

What brand are you going to run Fox, Kinig, Racerunner? I thought that air shocks were in a way dual rate due to the adjusting or both nitrogen levels and oil levels, but i am prolly wrong. Are you going to run any kind of limiting strap?
Colorado...its where the cool kids live

4RnrRick

#734
I already bought the 2" SwayAway RaceRunners with remote reserviors for the front.

From my understanding airshocks are NOT dual rate. However they do have some progressive rate spring qualities to them. and don't seem to be linear like a coil spring. Anyways - I choose coilovers and BillaVista just finished this killer tech articles that I still need to dig in and read.
The Coilover Bible- Part 1: http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/coilovers/Part_1/
The Coilover Bible- Part 2: http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/coilovers/Part_2/

For limiting straps my current plan is dual winches with in-dash controls......
Front: Warn HS9500i
Rear: Warn M6000

Made a heavy wall rear CV shaft tonight. Front shaft is 24.25 fully compressed. Rear shaft is 26.25 fully compressed. I wanted to make them both the same length, but its just not feasible with stock toyota parts and I thought a 2" driveline spacer was a bit much. But I did find out with some test fitting that in an emergency I could run the shorter front shaft in the rear - I would just have to limit my droop (easy to do with a rear winch), otherwise it can seperate. I'll probably just make a square shaft for a spare that will stay in the trailer.

Pinoin angle at ride hieght is about 17 degrees.

4RnrRick

And this is how I'm gusseting up the axle link mounts.

THK Matt

man the angle at the flange on the Tcase... is steep at ride height.

Not really since I'm using a double cardan joint... 17/2 = 8.5 degrees per u-joint. I didn't measure the angle at full droop, but its probably about 25 degrees which I think was about a degree or two from the CV binding. I've ran these joints at 14 degrees with no issues and don't expect any here.

Matty

great work as usual.  im looking forward to seeing the rest of it come together.

I'd like to know a few more details on your drive shaft assy. Like what size tube you used  and how to set up your dial indicator apperatus if you've got a minute.

Found my new rear diff inspection / fill plug at lunch today. Its a #16 SAE weld-on bung and hollow hex plug with o-ring. I got it for about $15 from a local hose and coupling store.
