It's counter weighted for when Diane isn't in the Mammoth!  Especially, when she decides its better for her to "take" pics instead of riding!   :yikes:

All three thirds are done and two are installed. I still need to clean out the rear end and get all the metal shavings out.

The knuckels also need to be checked out and put back together with the new studs.

The axle bearings and seals have been replaced and are ready to go back in.

BTW here is the differance between the 5.71 (left) 5.29 (center) and 4.88 (right) pinnion gears. Notice both the 5.71 and 5.29 have 7 teeth and the 4.88 has 8 teeth?

IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

I wondered who was going to ask about that.  :rofl2:

It is a bag of desiccant beads. It is to keep the gears dry and rust free in the spare.

Owww, sissors anyone?

Mark I ran 4.88's in my 4Runner, I loved the gearing. If it feels just a little low with 5.29's I think you are gonna love them too.

They may still be a little low. They are only going to drop my rpm by 200 rpm. This diesel has a lot of low end to overcome a higher gear. I just hope the rpm isn't too high at hwy speed.

Will soon find out, it is almost done, I just need to put oil in the rear and put the drive shaft in.

Nope, just gears and I need to keep them for now.

Packing up tools and heading out for a nice long road test. Some where around 80 to 100 miles. That should good enough to find out how things are doing.

BBL with a full report.

Were back, We drove out to Astor next to Ocala National Forest and this is amazing. It gets right up to speed and cruises right along at 60-65. Still could use a 5th gear, but feels right at home at 55-60.

There is still a bearing locking up in the trans or tcase, not sure just yet, but they will need to come out and get inspected.

Other than that it was an uneventful 80+ mile trip.

and it was HOT! I got sunburned!
I just checked on our topo software, it's about a 70 mile trip one way. That was a good drive, I just wish it was a little cooler out or overcast at least.
