Cast what myself?

I am using the Predator cause I got it cheap and was interested in how I could adjust/modify it.  It is great for air flow metering, but not so good at fuel.  Tends to get crappy mileage.  I have done a few things to try and help with that since I am only running a stock engine.

Did you cast it yourself?

I tried to make a joke in reference to what Glen said. I have never seen one either. It looked kind of primitive, and I was thinking about the Willymammoth and how he casts some of his own stuff., so it led me to ask that question. I guess it wasn't as funny as I thought it was. :smack:

No, didn't cast it.

It is a variable venturi carb.  They have been around for decades, but never really caught on.  They are great in certain applications, but they tend to idle bad so they were not a great manufacturers choice for street cars.

It flows 370 - 900+ cfm controlled by engine demand.

Wow. Sounds like what a 460 needs. This is a 460 correct? Or am I wrong? I don't know anything about vans, or fords... just old chevy trucks and toyotas.

Rocksurfer

Those are 100% hotrod carbs, probably one of the reasons it sucks on mileage.

Yup, I have been pondering and making some adjustments to limit the fuel flow so hopefully I can do something with it.  Besides...How much worse than 10mpg can it get???  I already accept that the Beast will never get anything like decent mileage.  I am more hopeful that dropping weight from that bed in the spring will help.

Repainted the valve covers...looks like crap...weird brown runs.  Don't care.  Just hope it doesn't crack again.  Should be well above freezing all night.

Transfered over all the fittings to the new manifold...ready to install hopefully tomorrow.

Anyone know what this thing is?

A few pictures...don't mind the grease...those covers are supposed to be white.

I may not be able to use the spacer...not much clearance at the top, but I have read that these carbs run better with a spacer.  Anyone know of a real low profile air cleaner?

looks like your gonna need to make some sort of air scoop cause  there aint no dang room for a regular air cleaner,  might shop around for a motorcraft carb

Well I can try it without the spacer, then a cleaner will fit.

A 2 barrel will give you better low end and better mileage   :yesnod:

BTW 10 MPG is good milege for that thing. Just wait till you get 4 MPG.  :rofl2:

You need a 750 Holly with vacuum secondary, something you can get parts for.

Oh, and do you have the Predator on backwards?

It's not bolted down!  Time for some sawzall action!

I'm thinking that you need to find a air cleaner that has a dropped base plate, one that goes down around the carb if possible!  If not, sell that on ebay and find a lower profile carb.

Well I pulled the spacer and it fits fine.  I will give it a try like this and later on I can try the spacer if I want.  It will fit, just gonna need some different sized hardware (studs and air cleaner) to get it all to clear.

Not yet...I wanted to try to fire it by today, but it is just too cold out.  I ran outta feeling in my extremities.  I am also a little confused about some of the vacuum routing.  I think there are lines running back on themselves...very odd.  Need to be culled out and plugged.
