gee Glen, that is generous of you, but I don't think that engine was 300 hp.

1983-1986 - 7.5 L 460 V8, 245 hp (183 kW)

1973-1979 - 460 in³ (7.5 L) 385 V8

QuoteBesides service in large luxury cars in the 1970s and in trucks throughout its life, the 385 series engine was also popular in motorhomes, marine, and industrial applications. Over 50 varieties were produced in any given year.

As with the FE line of engines, Ford also offered Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet versions of the 429. The Cobra Jet, rated at 370 hp, was equipped with a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor, larger camshaft, 11.3 to 1 compression ratio and a special set of cylinder heads. The Super Cobra Jet, rated at 375 hp, had a 4-bolt main block, a Holley carburetor, and a larger mechanical camshaft. In 1971, the CJ engine also used a 4-bolt main block. However, these engines were actually underrated and produce power in the 440-460 hp range. This was done to deceive insurance companies (common practice in that era), so that buyers did not have to pay higher insurance rates.

After 1973 emission controls dropped HP numbers to between 208 and 245.  The 385 in the article you posted is the engine series...361, 370, 429, 460 are the 385 engines.

1979 the 460 looks to have had 224 hp and about 350+ lb-ft torque...
due to emissions controls the compression ratio was dropped down to 7.5 to 1.

I can vouch for that, my 35' mh with a 454 out pulled The LBC uphill, though The LBC didn't completely loose it's brakes coming back down. :scared:

She pulls fine, although still needs and exhaust and carb work.  The numbers really dropped at the end of the 70's with the first emission systems.  Steadily came back up through the mid 80's.

How many lot lizards do you think have been in that thing

I had a 460 in my last motorhome and it had headers on it.  That engine was extremely responsive.  They are well worth it in my opinion.

I don't know if I mentioned it before, but while werkin in the beast I kept getting whiffs of BO...YUCK!
Took me a while but I finally located the source:  The rolled up seat belts.  Decided to look around for some replacements and found a really nice set for a decent price at www.seatbeltpro.com

Def. recommend them if you need to replace your belts.  These are actually replacements for older Ford trucks!  What luck!

Due to an inadvertent afternoon nap I didn't get much done, but what I did do made quite the difference.  Finally finished trimming the carpet to fit and installed the trim.  Front kick panels were painted to match the engine cover and all new hardware for the new car feel.
