its not actually mounted yet. its just mocked up with the c-clamp to drill holes. Yes, I will be using this to plate it.

Same here ...My build was done from reading, rereading and somewhat memorizing the pirate FAQ. Why try to reinvent the wheel?  someone has already figured it out somewhere, we just have to make it work for us.

We all know the merits of a drill press, but after doing 2 boxes myself, I don't see how it would be easier to use a drill press for this. It doesn't take more than an hour to do anyway.

well i'm sure it doesn't take that long, and i'm sure you don't need to have one, but if i have one, why not put it to use....regardless...DTB keep up the good work.

I have a couple questions maybe u guys can help me with. I need to extend my steering shaft by about an inch and a half or two. I read about people drilling out some plastic (shear?) pin to allow the shaft to extend. I cant seem to find one on mine just a solid metal tube with this steel accordian sleeve on part of it. Do I cut the shaft, sleeve it with a piece of tube and weld up to extend?




Also, I cant figure out if I should mount the brakelines on the inside or outside of the frame rail. It seems if it is on the inside it might not have enough reach when at full droop. If it is on the outside it seems that it would be prone to attacks from rocks and sticks coming up in the wheelwell and damaging the line. Any thoughts on these?

The brakeline might be prone to attacks, but I have seen a few on the outside of the frame with no problems....

I already have an IFS shaft so I guess Im gonna have to sleeve it then?

Also I am looking for places to mount my rear shocks. The rear round tube crossmember seems to sit directly above the axle so Im thinking I can just drill a couple holes thru that and weld a bolt sleeve in. The problem is that the front side of the crossmember is rusted out pretty good in some places...i dont have a good pic sorry...is there a way to strengthen this crossmember tube without replacing it completely?

the gas tank mount is attached to that crossmember though i suppose i could cut the mount off and weld it to a new relapcement tube...dunno i was just looking for an easy answer...i know there never really is one lol

Somehow my list got longer? I have taken 2 weeks off cuz ive been so busy...tuesday is GO time again

Go the extra step when you replace that crossmember, and raise the gas tank an inch or two. You will thank yourself later. I know the truck tanks don't hang down like the runner tanks but it would still be smart to raise it a little. You can use some spacers or something, with new nuts welded to them to raise the front. Then build the new mount higher in the rear.
Oh and replacing the crosmember is the easy way. If you were to try and weld to the old crossmember you would just burn right through it. Those factory crosmsmbers are(tinfoil) thinner than the frame.

My lines are mounted outside the frame and I have never ripped off a front brakeline.

for my steering shaft i just used a section of my stock tie rod off of my front axle. i cut the steering shaft in half and used the grinder to make them fit in the ends tie rod section. measured and checked to find the right distance. worked really good.  i dont know if you have a stock tie rod though

I ran my lines on the outside on my 81, that's where they were anyways, and all (except very old vehicles) have 2 piece steering shafts so that when you have a frontend collision it will colapse instead of pushing into your chest killing you. They are held in place by a pin that if you remove the pin it will allow you to extend it out.

That will work DTB. That is what I did except I added my extension on the other end of the shaft.

Why do you need to cut out that crossmember in the back? My shock hoop fits easily behind the round crossmember.

He shortened the wheelbase just enough that his rear axle is under that crosmember. He wants to mount his shocks there but the crosmember is rusted.

DTB, just weld some angle iron over the crossmember.  then you have a square mount to have the bolt heads rest against.
