looking at these pictures now i just answered my own question... spacer welded in the front ...less leverage on the shock bolt and the shock should be mounted as close to the center of axle tube as possible (the gusset itself is dead center on the axle tube)
Sounds like good logic to me. Why not just a shorter bolt then?
