my advice where i had to do one DONT TAKE IT TO A SHOP. doing it yourself is really not that hard (even for a first timer) and it will save you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much money and if your anything like me you dont have much to spare. but like i said i did mine myself and it took a little while but the savings was worth it. :_order:

I offered you my driveway in my IM to ya,  :beerchug:

I've never touched a V6 but I can swap a 4cyl HG in about 2 hours so it can't be that bad..

Be sure it is that first though, run a compression test and a gas test..

Brandon

just re-read your thread - definately a HG or cracked block! Next you need to determine what bank it is coming from (no need to replace both HG's)

Your plugs should tell you that, one would be white from burning water..

Possibly..

A compression test could tell you also, need to do both of those first. Then grab the new gasket from FPS and a case of good brew and come on over ;)  (my wife is going to kill me)

Dirty Yota

An easy test to find the leak is to pull the spark plugs and fill the radiator with water,(coolant isn't nessary your going to tear it apart).  The water will come out of the spark plug hole with the broken part. A cooling system pressure tester will speed this up.  ALWAYS HAVE THE HEAD CHECKED AT A MACHINE SHOP! They can clean it and inspect for cracks.  Cracks can be fixed with a tig welder. If they want to rebuild the head (new valves) you'll have a lot of options. Both heads, new motor, engine swap or just the one head.

I'd suggest replacing both headgaskets at the same time.  At the dealership, we remove both heads at once and leave the exhaust manifolds and crossover pipe attached.  With 2 guys, the heads can be lifted out and you dont have to fight the friggin bolts that hold the xover pipe in place.

Also, go buy a good set of TOYOTA headgaskets.  Aftermarket gaskets fail all the time.  Better yet, get a valve grind set- that way you'll have all the upper intake manifold gaskets you'll need.  It'll come with new exhaust manifold gaskets, which you don't need to mess with unless you have an exhaust leak at the head.  Also, don't remove the upper intake plenum from the truck.  Un-bolt it and fold it over onto the passenger side fender with all the vacuum lines attached.  Buy a new knock sensor and the wire for it- we always replace 'em at the dealership.  It's in the "V" of the block and a real pregnant dog to replace, so why not do it while the heads are off?

Heres the order I usually do them in:
1.  remove the battery (it allows easier access to the power steering pump bolts)
2. Drain coolant and remove shroud/radiator assy.
3. Remove Fan and accessory drive belts.
4.  Remove upper and middle timing covers.  No need to remove the crank pulley or lower timing cover
5.  Loosen the tensioner and remove the timing belt
6.  Remove the Power Steering pump and alternator
7.  Remove the Camshaft pulleys and back timing cover
8.  Remove the 90* hose/box thing from the Throttle body to the hose coming from the filter box
9.  Remove the upper intake manifold and fold onto passenger side fender- you'll have to undo the cold start injector line and electrical connector, one large vacuum hose from the passenger side.  Remove the coolant lines from the throttle body once the upper plenum is loose and you can get to the clamps.  I think theres one or two more vacuum connections on the back of the manifold you'll have to disconnect too...
10.  Unhook all injectors, knock sensor wire, etc. and move wiring harness to front side of heads.  Do not remove harness entirely!
11.  Remove the lower intake plenum.  If theres a ton of dirt and :pokinit: in the valley, vacuum it out first.
12.  Remove the valve covers.  Be careful.  They're plastic.
13.  Remove cam caps and cams.  Keep them in order front to back and left to right- it matters when you put 'em back!
14.  Remove the head bolts.  You'll need a large allen head tool with a 1/2" drive.  I can't remember what the size is to save my life...  But the head bolts are tight.  They get torqued to like 40 ft/lbs, and then two 90* turns on top of that, so break 'em loose gradually and carefully.  Use the order in the manual, or just go side to side, from the center out
15.  Crawl under the truck and undo the 3 14mm nuts that hold the exhaust down pipe to the collector at the drivers side manifold.  They're probably rusty muthas, so spray 'em down with some PB Blaster or equivalent...  They usually bust loose pretty good with a 24" extension and a 3/8" impact gun...
16.  Get your friend/spotter/mom/neighbor to come and help jerk the heads off of the block and onto the ground.  Watch for the hook on the drivers side and the reed  valve on the passenger side.

OK.  What did I forget?

so.. sat?

keep in mind if you wanna get the heads resurfaced it's gonna take a few days (I like ram auto in west sac for machine work)

I need a hand pulling my engine etc so this could work out good  :eyebrow:

BTW what I am offering is all the tools (air, whatever) and a place to work on your rig - I can't commit to helping do ANY work (although I am sure I'll get dirty, always do)

In return here and there I might need a little hand for 15 minutes here and there to pull my drivetrain and set it from one rig to another..

I'll be around this weekend if you need to borrow anything, just follow the manual and you'll get it. There are short cuts but they don't save ya that much in the long run. Personally I HATE the FSM, it's all bass ackwards. Haynes (autozone or FPS) is fine..

no problemo...I'm sorry if I forgot anything, thats just what I can remember off the top of my head.  I haven't done one in few months.  My buddy did, however, pull the ORIGINAL as in FACTORY INSTALLED spark plugs out of a 93 4Runner today with like 140k miles on it.  They were a little worn  :gap:
