I would find out what Toyota recommends for torque and go with that. Also you will feel the gasket crush under the bolt as you tighten it. It will start to tighten up then get loose and then tight again. This is were you will pull till you get the proper torque. What ever pattern you use it should start in the middle and work back and forth until you get all the bolts. Tighten it in two stages, half of the required torque and then to the final torque. Make sure you oil the threads and shoulder of the bolts or you will get an inaccurate reading. If you want you can use a silicone sealer on the threads, but do not get any on the head gasket or that will make it leak. The head gasket should go on dry except for a small amount of sealer around the water jackets if they look pitted with rust or corrosion.

Good luck

Blackdog-

Torque to 35ft lbs and then two 90* turns.  start in the middle, work your way out crossing left to right for torque pattern (middle left, middle right, rear left, front right, rear right, front left, etc...)

As WillyMammoth said, go in 2 or three passes up to the 33 ft lbs, then one 90 on all bolts, then the second 90 on all bolts.

You may consider checking the oil cooler adaptor on the block while you've got the heads off...

Question, hoping that the block is fine, and thatthe reason the headgasket allowed water through, would a bad t-stat lead to this?  Bob at the shop showed me where water had gotten by the headgasket, and I know a crack is still possible, but would it have to right there on the top to do that?

a bad t-stat could cause enough of an overheat to blow a headgasket...but oil and water won't mix at the t-stat.

spent 4 hours or so today on the truck, didnt finish.  I borke a couple of peices that I have to go to the dealer to replace, and We had to back track a little to get some crap out of one of the head bolt holes. (ie had to take the head back off :smack: )  So it has been a real productive day.  We did get the heads back on, and the cams in, and the valve covers on, and the lover intake plenum.  All we have left is the upper intake plenum, the timing, all the hoses and lines and such, the alternator, the power steering pump, the radiator, and the fan.  wish me luck for tommorow :crossed:

lets cover the basics before you go tearing into it again...

Did you:

change the oil and filter
change the coolant
check the oil cooler on the drivers side of the block for cross-contamination
run it for a few minutes and change the oil again to get all the foamy residue out of the block?
check the water pump and thermostat areas

trying to eliminate all that i can  :dunno:

Changed the oil and filter, changed the coolant, didnt do the oil cooler or run it for a few minutes and change the oil again.  But I did stick a screwdriver wrapped in paper into the #4 piston, and the paper came out soaking wet.  also, my temp guage went sky high after mabye 5 minutes of the truck running
