Hey BD-

I've got a lead on a 3.0 here in Abq...
Rob and I just put new HG's in it, new seals, ignition parts, 3 new valves, countless other parts.  It's in a 4runner that our friends chick decided to roll.  The engine runs beautifully, pulls great and doesn't use any oil.  If you decide you're interested, I'll see how much he wants for the engine, harness, and ECU...

call me tomorrow if'n you want it!

got my throttlebody sitting on my desk in front of me.  What am I looking for? a freeze plug?  on the bottom, correct? there is a metal thing, looks like it could be a plug, but it is in there  :dunno:

Hey ryan, what type of stuff should I be looking for when i check this engine out?  any tips?  i dunno what to look for.  If you could find out the price for the one in ABq that would be cool as well, my only problem would be getting it here.  The guy does have the tranny and starter if that helps :dunno:

Sounds a little high w/136K on it but thats just my  :twocents:

well, the foregin auto recyclers here are talking 1650 for a rebuild, and from 1300 to 1500 or so for a pulled engine from a wrecked truck.  I think CA is higher.  and their warranty isnt all that great either

Easiest way to check that TB is to pressure test it via the coolant line hookups like we talked about on the phone today.  Post up some pictures!

The engine that is out there concerns me simply due to the differences in year model.  They changed the size of the individual pins in the connectors somewhere in the 1990 area.  I know he's got the engine and ecu and harness, but what concerns me is that the ECU and or harness plugs into the dash harness at some point and you may have compatibility issues.  The last thing you need is to drop $600 and not be able to plug it in.  I'll check with Rob tomorrow and see if he thinks it will plug and play.  I'd suspect you'll end up swapping your engine harness and any sensors that dont interchange from your engine to the new engine and retain your ECU to make it work.  If you dont mind the work (like it matters at this point...) that is one possible solution.

The engine that is here would be good, and I know it works because I worked on it with Rob.  We ship engines all the time at work, and its not as bad as you'd think.  I *think* the engine is out of a 92 runner, so it should drop in and fire right up.  The only issue you may run into is wether or not it's a Cali emission spec engine.  As I remember the only difference was an EGR temp sensor, which you could probably swap out from your setup.  Again, let me check tomorrow for you at work...

does it hold any pressure?  that coolant plug looks to be there...any evidence of coolant getting past it?  at this point who knows? :dunno:  :spin:

Do you see any water stains in side of that throttle body? It's hard to see in the picture. Check the gasket for places where water could be getting by.

looks like there is orange RTV on that throttle body.  For future reference, that is a no-no  :nonono:   Always use a gasket on intake and exhaust manifolds- NEVER RTV.  It can clog up ISC motors, vacuum passages, etc....

I'll check on that engine for you today...

no, no water stains, and the throttle body is holding pressure fine

so is $600 fair for a 3.0 with 136K on it? computer, harness, and everything?

Reklund, I'm gonna call you later on about the one you have a lead on too

Has anyone had luck with the alumi fill, or something like that?? A guy just told me about it, he put it in his car, and it worked fine.  I guess it is an aluminum powder that you pour into the radiator? and the powder is supposed to seal up the leaks.  sounds like a "miracle druig"" that wont work for long :dunno:

derek

alumi seal works good for pinhole leaks in your radiator, but wont seal heads or blocks.
they also make this stuff called block seal, but rebuilders hate that stuff.
it can clog up everything, but i have heard of it sealing blown head gaskets.

derek

BLACKDOG

I dunno, I just dont trust additive like that.  There is no telling when they are gonna fail, and how violently. (dad used it on a radiator, and the thing blew the stuff out like a bullet, too much pressure, and ripped a big chunk out of the area around it)  we already replaced the headgaskets so i think it is a block problem

Sorry dude

BLACKDOG

well, we (waffler and I) went and checked out the engine up here.  It seemed like it was in pretty good shape.  I turned over, didnt have any leaks.  Oil looked good (never drained) plugs looked good.  checked around the injectors, no leaks.  Only problem I could really se is the power steering pulley is bent, and there is rust on a lot of the components, but it is only surface rust, mostly on accesory brakets, and other miscellaneous metals.  The block and heads dont have rust on them

so, does that mean you're getting it?

reklund5

blackdog-
sounds like a winner...we figured the shipping on my buddies engine would run around $300.  If you can get that engine for $600 and don't mind swapping the harness from yours to the new one, that will work out fine.

I'm wheeling in Las Cruces this weekend- you should see all the cool rigs here!  Luckily, I'm camping at the Holiday Inn, as it's been raining....
