I figured that, thought I'd throw it out there though.
would have thought that would have worked too! they were so flat they were folding over on themselves. it freeked me out., but it still didn't fit.
I love that RV, it would be so cool to be able to kick back on the couch or make some lunch on the road but we really don't NEED it.

What about one of them toyboxes? either the RV type or trailer type??  I saw one the otherday that had a flatbed rear, with the front part  a popup trailer   It was pretty cool, had a buggy on it, so the Mammothe should fit

LOL! MrW has actually been floating the idea of getting a flatbed trailer and putting a sleeping quarters on the front of it! A popup, that's pretty cool!
I think it's going to depend on what we might be able to get for our trailer.
It would be a lot easier hauling a flatbed across the country.

several guys in our local club have 30' or so gooseneck trailers.  They put a slide-in camper designed for the bed of a truck on the front, with the sleeping part above the goosneck of the trailer and tie it all down, then put their rigs behind the camper.  It's WAY cheaper than a motorhome, and a nice slide-in camper with slide-out compartments is plenty roomy for 2.  That's what I want to do eventually, but my old IDI Ford struggles on the hills with just my Pickup on the trailer...

I have seen that done and it would be cool, but I want to buy a $2,500 school bus and cut off the back 10 or 12 ft and make a flat deck for the Mammoth. The rest could be for us to use as living space. I should be able to do all that for under $5,000. Thats way cheaper than some $30,000 motorhome.

Just run those Pathfinder wheels in the mud, you will kick some serious tail then!

As if you didnt have anything to do, and incase I missed it on a different page, can we get a weight reading on this bad boy?

Thanks

How much Al casting have you done? The scrap that you are using looks like pieces of Al that were not cast originally. I have been "homecasting" for a couple of years, which means that I've read a lot and cast a little! For the kind of structural strength you want, pistons, alloy wheels, gearbox caseings etc are a better bet. The other thing is to "ingot" the metal first, this drives out the gasses given off by the first melt. A good way of ingoting is to put All soda cans with the tops cut off (well washed and dry) in your sand and fill them up!

Home casting is really sometrhing! Hope this helps, Matthew

Most of the scrap is T6, that should be plenty strong and with a little thicker cast it should be way strong enough.

Matthew

Never the less it is what I have and I am going to use it. If it fails you can say you told me so, but I doubt there will be a problem. If you know more about this than you are saying then post up some links or articles for us to read so maybe we can all learn something.

When I posted the sujestion that you use Al alloys such as pistons, alloy wheels, transmissions etc and that you ingot them, it was based on what I said, a little experience and quite a lot of reading. Most of my information came from

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hobbicast

There was a break away group that unfortunately no longer exists, there are probably new groups on the web since I started, but I've been reasonably sucessful so far. My casting to date has been mostly things like pulleys and machine tool parts. I've nearly finished a dividing head and have a tool cutter grinder under way as well. I'm not very good at explaining some of the things that go on with the physics of casting. Even though I've been fairly sucessful, I have had gas bubbles in my castings, they weren't a problem for me, but they could be for you.

I'm not interested in "I told you so", it just seemed to me to be a shame to not have as much chance as possible on your side. I've really enjoyed the "Willy mamouth" build up, I would be pleased to have been of help.

Wishing you sucessful casting, Matthew

Matthew, Thanks for your information. I will do some more research before I am ready. I haven't even figured out the placement of the gears yet and I will need to do some machining before that. So I still have time to research this further.

Rooting around in my "old" favorties list I came up with the following.

This has a lot of good information on venting and sprues. This applies to "lost" polystyrene, you can vent by using soda straws to create  air ways! Polystyrene (styrofoam to you?) gives off a lot of gas, obviously don't breath it, the gas can "choke" metal flow.

http://www.host33.com/casting/

The casting section in this is good for the "principals.

Another thing that was usefull to me in the begining was a pyrometer from harbor freight
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=37772 at a little under $20 it's really usefull!

Have a good weekend, Matthew
