How do you shorten your shafts? I knew someone a long time ago who made a special input shaft for a gearbox out of two shafts grafted together, one was tapered on the outside, with a straight end that was threadedand the other was bored withe same taper, drilled and threaded. the two were screwed together a v was turned where the two met and they were then welded together. This was a rover / Buick v8 mated to a jaguar gearbox! I am interested in your machine shop methods, modifications and alignment as I am building up a home machine shop/ foundry so any techniques, methods or usefull tricks are really interesting to me.

respectfully, Matthew

Stock 82 tray bed 4speed petrol 18R pickup- soon to be diesel 5 speed.

If you can machine or grind the shaft to suit your needs that would be fine, but I wouldn't recommend welding a shaft because it won't be the same material and hardness. This could lead to a broken shaft when you need it most. The only shortening I did is to change the tail shaft from the g54 to a shaft from a L52. They are the same exact gear sets except they are in differant cases.

What are you trying to do?

I'm not trying to do anything specific yet, I'm building my workshop at the moment, 12m x 14m (about 40'x46'. I collect tools and machine tools (I have a beautiful 1840 pan brake that folds up to 2,05metres long!). All of the modifications that you have made interest me I am a mechanic and a sculptor (trained in both) I build structures, machines and modifier cars for television and cinema. Modifying to make unusual things work is my bread and butter! Fun thing I made recently was a radio controlled electric wheel chair!!

respectfully, Matthew

that sounds really cool Matthew. Where are you located?

Paris, France. I'm a Brit, I've lived more of my life outside the UK than in it! I lived in Maryland for a year way back in '67/'68. I took up home foundry work a couple of years ago, and I'm getting a machine shop together. I couldn't help thinking that it would have been nearly as easy to to cast an extension case as to shorten an existing one!

One of the great thing about my job is that I never work too long in the same place with the same people. I have to invent things all the time which demands a wide variety of techniques. Hence my interest in your modifications. How do you go about aligning engines and gearboxes when you make your bellhousing adaptations?

I have really enjoyed your " Making Of The Willy Mammoth", great problem solving, I'm sure that the resultwill be worth the effort. I am very pro diesel, I spent nearly ten years as a diesel mechanic. Here in Europe, there are a lot more Diesel engines around "petrol" is monstrously expensive. All that low down torque has to be good!

Respectfully, Matthew

Well you could over think it or just get'r done. I took the backing plate for the engine and used a caliper to scribe a line around the center line of the crankshaft. I then welded a flat bar across the center of the backing plate. Then adjusted the caliper to half of that mesurment and scribed cross lines to find center. I drilled a hole the size of the pilot shaft. Then placed the backing plate onto the bellhousing over the pilot shaft and moved it around ontill I got it lined up where it would be straight up and down. Marked off where the new holes had to go and started welding and drilling.

One custom bellhousing! :acclaim:

What you NEED is some on board air and an old pneumatic die grinder converted to blender-driving duty to go with that PTO driven ice machine.  NOTHING beats trailside Margaritas....  :boozer:

I tend to "over think" and then get it done! I thought it would do something like that. I presume you drilled on the miller, my Aisian pillar drill has 1/16" run out! Acurate drilling becomes really difficult!

MrW got called out on a job about 6am this morning :tantrum: and is still out working.
I'm cooking a sausage and cheese grits casserole for breakfast.  :chew: Decidedly southern I must say and then it's time to shear the dogs. Time for their summer-doo, by the time I get done with them they'll look like someone hit them with a weedwhacker but they'll be all cool and happy. I don't know why MrW doesn't want me cutting his hair myself  :headscratch:
