My new radiator came with the trans cooler since I planned to use/am using at for an oil cooler. And I got it for $80 shipped. What all is needed to go from manual to auto? I can't imagine much... not like going auto to manual. Probably different x-member?

Since I am 2/3rds through the swap I can answer a lot of your questions about it. I also have a guy that does conversion harnesses for these swaps.

I'm still in the "thinking about getting it" stage; what happened with your 4.3 anyways? And how much for an R150 trans and a wiring harness? It shouldn't need much since it's a front-cut and my truck is carb'd... but what do I know?

and on the 4.7 gears, pull the rear drive shaft off the back of the t-case, have buddy watch for how many rotations the flange makes, and spin motor over with a 19mm wrench on crank pulley bolt, 2.28 spins on crank pulley bolt to make flange spin once brings the suck, and 4.7 spins on pulley bolt brings the win

I tried this again since the trans is out; 4 turns on the input spins the rear flange 1 time with the trans in 1 and the case in 2H What gear/range does everything have to be in?

4.3 is still in my truck, I have a 1992 4runner that had a spun main so i bought a 97 4runner for $800 complete and I am swapping the 5vzfe into the 92. $200 for the trans and you will need a marlin adapter to use your gear driven tcase behind it (same applies to the auto if you use it).

The guy charges $200 for a plug and play wiring harness, you supply connectors from your dash harness and  the 5vzfe

That's another question; are those autos any good/reliable for wheeling or are they more useful as boat anchors?

That's not hard to do... for a few months I was buying PBR by the keg because it's cheaper than buying 30 packs all the time. And 'cause it's cool to have a keg outside the shop in the snow...  need to get a fridge for summer.

I want to get that 3.4 but we'll see how money looks soon. If I get it now it'll just wait in the shop until the 22R dies or winter comes next year; no point of starting a swap in spring... that's wheeling season!

So far most of the swap builds I have found (and have ben shown to me) are the 3.0 to 3.4; not many 22R to 3.4 and damn sure not many for early trucks like mine. One thing I haven't found a reason for when dealing with the exhaust: Why not just run dual exhaust and forget about the crossover pipe?

Why not just run dual exhaust and forget about the crossover pipe?

Twice the cost for an exhaust system and twice as much piping to get destroyed by the rocks.

there are a lot of people who run headers and then crossover under the trans and run it back in the stock location. If you get later model manifolds and crossover you do not have to flip the crossover. Early models have a 2 into 1 crossover 1996-2001. 2001 and later have a tubular style that goes into one pipe from the start

difference seen in this thread http://www.yotatech.com/f160/build-your-own-3-4-crossover-pipe-138902/

That would work.  You could get rid of the defroster in the cab as well, the Zoomies would do a pretty good job of that during the winter :D

Got the transmixer back in today; the last inch fought me a bit but it slid home with that great-to-hear THUNK at the end. I'm still itching for that 3.4 but it may not be in the cards/$$. Time will tell; c'mon Powerball!

Time says a new engine isn't likely for a good while... oh well; maybe the prices will drop by the time I'm ready for one. In the meantime I'm gonna rock the 22R to its full potential; which may mean a tune-up and a new cam. Why do the fun things always cost too much??

I'm in the same situation with my 20R.  I would really like something that isn't working itself to death and blowing out my eardrums just to drive highway speeds.  But for now it doesn't make sense financially, and it still runs great.  So I figure by the time I decide that something really needs to be done about it, I will get a tow rig and a trailer, or swap in an engine if I have to.

I plan on having a diesel tow rig and trailer before I swap motors.  There's been a couple of times wheeling that I've wanted a bigger motor but for the most part, the t-case gearing makes up for the lack of HP.  I say rock the 22R (or in QuickDraw's case, the 20R) until it dies.

That's pretty much what I've decided on; just kep it running until it quits while saving for another heart. It seems to do fine with the 5.29s in the axles now; going up Old Stage it has a bit more pep than the 4.88s. I actually used second gear a few times too!
How about a better cam to help it out? Engnbldr cams aren't going to break the bank and I've read a lot of good things about them; maybe a used MSD box from ebay too-dang things are close to $250 new... used is good enough for me.
I've done the fuel float mod, pressure regulator mod, vent tube mod and have a header; a cam seems like the next step to help the engine move along more.
On the regulator note: I got a Holley from Summit and a gauge but the gauge doesn't move no matter how much I turn the adjusting screw either way. How much fuel pressure does a stock mechanical pump push anyway? Maybe I got a bad gauge? I'm going to check that today and try to get the idle to calm down; it's still around 1000-1200 to stay running.

eh...

More will come along, just think of all the fall/winter first snow and black ice wrecks! No need to buy it just to sit on it for 5 months anyway.

Agreed; it's a common enough engine and the prices ought to be lower by the time I have money to burn/the 22R expires.

This weekend's going-ons:
de-shimmed the front axle since 1 was broken anyways
alignment... kinda
spacers for the rear axle
heater control calbe (finally)
horn magically started working

Maybe:
turbo/tach dash
rock lights
try the Subaru seats again

Let me take it up a couple of time... Maybe, I could "help" the 22R expire sooner. ;-p Totally kidding. It has done great so far, good winter project.

Yeah; a winter project for sure. Luckily the yard is full of late-models thanks to the cash for clunkers BS...

So today it was just what I said above, couldn't get the tach to work and the fuel gauge didn't work either. I did read the write-up about using the connector by the ignitor and wiring it to the 6th spot on the blue connector without any luck. I'd like to get that tach dash going; the 'turbo' light comes on with the ignition but goes out after it's started.

Didn't get the heater cable in; tried but failed since the cable housing hold-downs are a complete PITA to remove/get to. I'm going to set aside an entire day to pull the dash completely out. May re-wire the stereo so it doesn't lose memory when the ignition is off.

Tomorrow it'll be either Mt. Herman again or Old Stage to poke around some side trails.

What had happened was after going up this part of a side trail (skip ahead about 20 seconds):

the little trail got little-er and I had to turn around. I was going to use a slightly clear spot but the 4 inches of snow-covered ice had different plans. Someone had been stuck in the same spot before, as indicated by tire makrs everywhere. Somehow this didn't raise a warning flag to me... so I crept forward, only to slide off to the driver's side anddown about 10 feet off the trail. Later it was discovered the trail had been washed out and had a mean slant to it. Oh, and there was a lot of ice still there too. Yay.
After winching to 3 different trees, disconnecting the fuel pressure regulator (carb wasn't getting fuel at all) and lots of digging, we managed to get on level ground. Then I effected the sweetest 97-point turn and got pointed back down the trail. Going over the ice a second time was equally fun; the rear wanted to walk back off the trail a few times, but after gathering the last remaining courage I backed up and gave it hell and made it across. The ice patch was about 50 feet long, but from where I was sitting it seemed a LOT longer. And being on a side-slope didn't help at all. It was scary as hell; if that big rock didn't catch my left-rear tire there were some trees about 20 feet after that which would have. I have to thank Optima Batteries, rocks and trees, my shovel and Suz for keeping farily calm throughout all this... she was a tad worried too.
