The RUF isn't done/started yet; waiting on a guy to get back from Iraq that wants to buy my Pro Comp springs, which will be after the 22nd. From what I've read on the Pirate RUF FAQ I'm going to stay stock and maybe add a leaf or two from some other spring packs I have lying around. I'm probably going to get 5" shackles and see how that works; might drill a few holes for 4" to see if lower is better and still felxy. My goal is to lower the front a few inches (63s out back, looks kinda butt-heavy) and shift the axle forward some... I forsee cutting the radiator support, but that's no big deal.

Right now I'm wiring up the CB and redoing the radio as well.

I run a stock pack of rears up front on my truck and it flexes awesome. There isnt really an arch to the pack though so it sits really close to the bumpstops. Im running a 3.5" shackle, its stock from the rear of an 83 truck although my shackle mounts are under the frame, Not thru it.

That's something I've been checking on... how to mix-n-match RUFs for the best flex. I love my 63s; can't I just get a second set of those? :cheese:

I have a few decisions to make for long-term upgrades:
Bias or radial 36" Iroks
5VE-FE or 3RZ
keep old-school Longs or go 30 spline w/hubs
ARB in front or keep Lok-Rite
full or partial exo
where does the spare go
under-bed storage or bed box
:pokinit: or get off the pot
...and so on.

I'm getting another stock alternator this week even though the blue-top has been awesome without being charged. Later on I'd like to get one from a Saturn 1.9 DOHC since it's nearly a direct fit and cranks out about 105 amps. There's the whole wiring thing... that's always fun.

Okay, forget all that. I picked up a reman'd alt today; tossed it in and am showing a paltry +/- 11.5 volts at idle:
at the battery
at alt
at regulator
at alt with wires reomved

After searching I replaced the charge light in the dash, still 11.5 volts everywhere. I have a new regulator too and checked with the old one just to be sure. I haven't tried a different battery yet; don't know if that will help any or not. Before all this BS started it was charging fine at 14.8 or so at idle and held a charge forever. I checked grounds and wiring to/from the alt, everyone looks happy. I am totally lost here and don't want to post another "Charging Crap" post since I read a bunch of them already without success.

Does 12voltguy.com make garage calls?

Tested the reman'd alt and it's fine; tested the battery and it's fine too. Pulled the charge light relay and checked continuity across the terminals... nothing. I don't have a FSM for this truck, just a wiring diagram from Mitchell. Checking online parts stores is a dead-end for a replacement too; might have to make a trip to the yard to grab a few. Of all the spare relays I have, this is one I don't have. Go figure.

edit:
I also realized the charge and brake lights came on when I was going across a washboarded part of the road, perhaps this killed the relay? It does look factory; nice n dusty/Toyota part number too.

Yes it does! But I'd like to get the alternator/wiring BS straightened out first. Having more than 12 volts would be swell... so would having more than 90 horsepower.

FSMs are on my desktop; hope there isn't a ton of difference between 84/85...

Yesterday we went up Eagle Rock (again...) and flexed enough to let the fan blades chop a hole in the oil cooler line. It was fun; I heard the fan hitting something, then that turned into a hissing/spraying noise, then I saw the smoke and killed the engine ASAP. That was in the space of about 5 seconds. I was able to bypass the cooler and we didn't lose too much oil; about a quart or so. A fella in a Jeep came by and waited for my field-expedient reapirs and also helped out by charging up my battery. We got straightened out and continued on and got pretty far until a few snowdrifts came across the trail. Ever since that first off-camber silde I'm really nervous about sidehilling and snow. Also my tires suck, so... yeah. Turned around and went west to Victor and stopped by my uncle's place to get another battery charge. By this time it was about 6 so I knew there was no way I'd make it back home before dark. We left near 10 and let me say that driving in pitch-black with a whopping 8 volts for lights SUCKS. Made it to town and stopped by the local WallyWorld to pick up a battery so we could se to get the rest of the way home. Tomorow I'm going to the yard in hopes of finding another charging relay; Vatozone wanted $65 for one and would have to order it... pass!
Today I have been staring at the wiring diagrams and poking around trying to find something that will cure my not-charging problem. No luck so far... I have the alt's BATT wired right to the battery (8 gauge w/fuse) and it's still not charging. This is a reman'd alt but I had it tested the day after I bought it and it was good.  :headscratch: :headscratch: :dunno: :dunno:

My alt is the L-E-F style with a black plug; the 3 wires go to the external regulator along with the battery wire. IIRC the 3 wires are yellow, white-black and green; batt is also yellow, but thicker gauge. I'm gonna swing for the fences and pray I find another charge relay dealie tomorrow; the yard's site lists ONE 85 Toy p/u.

That one 85 listed was just the frame; cab and bed were long gone... luckily there's a few other places in town to pick from and I scored another relay for $14 after tax which is a little better then whatever VatoZone wanted.

Now let's hope it works...

It didn't work...

I tore into the wiring some more and found the big connector behind the left headlight was fr-r-r-ried and a few wires had holes, like from previous probing and not repaired. Also the round connector between the alt and voltage reg is stuck. It'll wiggle but it won't come apart. I don't want to trash it (yet) while separating it but that may have to happen. Hm... I hate wiring crap.

So today I have been putting stuff back together and after buttoning up everything it wouldn't start. Cranked fine, no vroom-vroom.

Turns out I forgot to plug in the igniter...  :hammer:

Fired right up, still not charging. Checking the wiring behind the fuse block, so far it looks good; not burned or poked or crap. WTF else am I forgetting?? I have continuity from the battery all the way to the alt; the wiring diagram is making me cross-eyed and I am pretty much out of ideas/options here.

What I have done so far:
new (re-man'd) alt; tested good at 2 different parts places
new voltage regulator
new wiring from batt post on alt to everywhere
soldered lots of connections
new battery
used charge lamp relay
checked every fuse; kick panel and under hood

There's got to be smoething simple I am not seeing...

Going to swap out alts tomorrow with (another) reman'd one; I don't want to spend the $$ for new when I plan to upgrade to the Saturn down the road.

May get rears (for RUFs) this weekend; we'll see.

No RUFs yet; haven't heard from the guy who was going to buy my Pro Comp springs and give me his old rears. Hm... crap. Went up Old Stage this wekend; managed to break a shock mount and lose a caliper bolt before I hit any trail! The caliper bolt was fixed with another bolt, nut/washer for a spacer and a few wraps of thread tape since the bolt hole is stripped out. Awesome.
The shock mount was welded on poorly and I didn't bother to fix it since "it's done well this far..." dammit.  :hammerhead: As I was turning onto the trail the left front tire locked up going forward at any speed so I pulled over to inspect. That's when I saw the leaning shock hoop of Toyota and figured something might be amiss. I bent the hoop back to its original position and tried to turn again; same thing happened. I peek at the rotors and notice I am minus one lower caliper bolt. Great. Thanking God I brought my 4-way lug wrench and Hi-Lift, I proceeded to remove the wheel to inspect the damage further. Thinking it wasn't "that bad", I removed the caliper and wired it to the hoop (yes, now I know "duh") and went on down the trail. About 1/4 mile in I can hear the caliper being tagged by the tire so I pull off again to see WTF is going on. Since I forgot about gravity, the weight of the caliper pulled the hoop back into the tire and took the caliper with it. Crap in a hat. This time I removed the caliper completely and pinched off the brake line with some line-locks I happened to bring along "just in case". So I continue on to the campsite with 3 brakes and 3 shocks. Way to go, tripod! Made it to camp and left the truck alone while we set up camp; plus I needed a beer.
After we set up camp, we drove back down the road to get cell phone signal and called a few friends in hopes of getting another bolt to us since they were coming up Friday. Luckily a few showed up and I was able to "make it work" with the aid of the aforementioned washer/bolt/thread tape. Gheto-fabulous, indeed! Now I am still minus a shock but I didn't let that deter me from wheeling Eagle Rock and finishing out Mt Baldy Road on Saturday. I even pulled out a high-centered Jeep! It's about time, too!
That's another thing that burned my ass all weekend: I saw 1 (one) 1st gen 4Runner , and that was the ONLY real Toyota I saw all weekend! I'm not counting the 7-10 FJ Cruisers I saw drive past; they've got that IFS crap and were all shiny and dent-free. About everything else was Jeeps... My friends need to buy Toyotas already!

Crap it's been a long weekend...

Sounds like the electrical bug is contagious... shortly after your battle everything on mine went on the fritz.  One headlight went dim, cig lighter was out, turn signals worked SOMETIMES, and to top it off it finally stopped charging.  I ended up replacing all the major grounds, then I took out all the fuses and cleaned the oxidation off the contacts, and tightened everything up.  That seemed to solve most of the problems...  And the charging problem was something stupid.  I thought that I ripped out a ground wire...so I reconnected it to ground...turns out the wire was supposed to be just left alone, connected to nothing.  ...The previous owner put in a GM alternator, so it's a little screwy that way...  Anyway if you ground it, the truck won't charge.  So I'm hoping that's all done.

You make me glad that I rewelded my shock hoop.  Mine was kinda screwy and I also thought "It's been fine so far..."  But I imagine it was just a couple big bumps away from flying off...  Good luck with the parts falling off/shaking apart/ deteriorating stuff... mine seemed to lose something almost every trail run last year.  Went wheeling today, and my carburetor shook itself apart.  Now I've got an air leak, and i almost sucked some bolts down into the intake manifold...  Damn it, will it ever end?

My electrical business is still messed up but I'm charging the Optima before/during/after each time I go out. So far, so good... from what I've read the GM alts are grounded through the casing same as Toyotas. I checked the grounds and everyone looked fine; I have no idea what to do now so I'm not doing anything.

Besides, I've got some shock hoops to re-weld...  :slap:

The crawl box? That's long gone; it's in Matt's former 4Runner I guess. This stuff came with his truck and it ended up in my shop when we replaced his windshield and stuff. Well, it's going to the scrap yard tomorrow then; thought I could use something from it.
Swing and a miss...

On another note I have started thinking about a turbo engine but using the CT26 for more pow-ah. Should I just get a 3.4 when the time comes or build a turbo engine? There's a pre-85 short block locally for $100; I could yank a 20R head from the yard and make it a screamer (I think)... or what?

Me, "Let me paint your sliders"

Dan, ""

Me, "I promise, I will not paint them pink"
Dan, "ok" (makes the mistake of walking off to get another )
Me (spraying on some shiny  :bling: and  :haha:)

Dan -  :yikes:

(He is lucky I was close to the end of the can or there may have been more than just sliders painted.  :eyebrow:)
