It's fine; I have the oil return line for it too. I picked it up from a friend who's into the older (82-85.5) Supras. He bought a 93 (?) JDM 2JZ engine and tossed the twin turbos to get one big turbo, so they landed in my shop. One turbo was frozen, this one seems fine. It has a little shaft play but doesn't come close to hitting the housing. I had pipe dreams of sticking it on my CRX but I don't want to do that anymore.
At least not for a while...

I also have a Garrett from a 97 Saab 9000 ready to ship; the buyer hasn't paid in a month so screw him.

I want a 'charged 3RZ

I meant TRD sooper-charged; not turbo.  :burnout:

I still think a 'charger is better because a turbo has lag, whereas a 'charger is boosting from the get-go. I love turbos, don't get me wrong... but for crawling/wheeling it seems a 'charger would be the ideal choice.

But then again, what do I know?

I do know that toyota stop offering the superchargers for the 3rz due to the stress the super charger puts on the engine.

Got half the frame back together; cutting 3/16" with Home Depot discs SUCKS.

Had to cut out a little more on the left side:

Also tried to clean out as much dirt/rust from inside as I could:

Patch installed, going to do the shear plates tonight :

And there you have it.

Both of you hush...I was doing a bunch of other stuff before I tackled the frame today.
I want to lower the bed about 3" and re-do the shock crossmember since it's not really welded to the frame. Plus the factory fuel tank support/exhaust hanger is rusted through on the top side somehow so that's on the list to get replaced/repaired later. I took off the bed side metal which wasn't hard since the welds didn't have good penetration at all. A hammer and chisel took care of a lot of them; had to use the cut-off on a handful. Great welding; hope there isn't more of that lurking in some other important loaction. Seeing the crappy welds that connect the bed to the frame got me thinking of re-doing them and lowering it later. Like "after I get a plasma cutter" later. While staring at the bed I got the brilliant idea to build a storage compartment just behind the cab within the bed/frame area. It'd be 12"x10" and 4' long if I can swing it; I was also thinking of raising the fuel tank somehow but that would interfere with the storage box idea... unless I shorten it to 3 or 3.5 feet long. It's a long way off and I'm focusing on the frame and getting the Chevy springs in this week.
Which brings me to another thought: (I know, I'm dangerous when I think)
Should I extend the frame rails (a foot or so) so I can move the axle back/mount the Chevies? Right now it looks like the front spring mount would be just in front of the frame's curve and the rear would be just at the end of the frame.

I don't know...

Duh, forgot to add eye candy:

Got the shear plates on:

Nekked frame:

Is the shock mount supposed to be tilted forward??

Possible storage between the first and second vertical bars; will move the second to 90 degrees and maybe back 1-2":

And the rust doesn't end... how important is this and can I make another bracket to hang the fuel tank?

I'll try to have the front of the springs mocked up and get some hangers built since I have steel now. I think it'd be slick having that storage area... except the exhaust may be in the way or get things hot. Hm... forgot about that.
I am ready for some wheeling; fixing problems is fine but when it's during good weather that just sucks. It was nice to have the shop doors open though; no more welding fumes killing me.

Thanks guys! I still think I may end up chopping off the back half and making something silly... 4-link or something. That's way down the line though and I'm just learning how to wheel. I may need another liner for my welder; it gets sticky from time to time and I just replaced the tip but that didn't help.

Matt, bring down some DOM; I'll se what I can do with it. The shocks may need new axle mounts since the current set are pretty crappy looking. Should I just stick them back in the stock location on the frame or go inboard-style like they were before?

C'mon, tax return! (and plasma cutter)

we can use plate to make axle tabs... its pretty easy to do we can weld bolts on to the tubing or drill a hold through there to mount the upper part... on my old truck i used the sky kit but we can recreate it easy.

this was mounted way to high

tabs i used were premade but we can make them

gives u the idea... we dont really need to bend them just mount them up pretty high and i think we are good

Awesome sauce... "too high" may not be a problem since I don't have an actual bed. You'll be happy to know I'm about 1/3 done with the right side frame.
In that first picture it looks like I could drop a hanger for the fuel tank off the shock mount and get rid of my rusted factory hanger... thoughts? As for shock tabs I could use the old spring hangers; cut-n-grind to fit. Recycling isn't just for hippies!

It's also for broke folk like me...

Got the right side stitched in today; still need the shear plates, but the big sections are in and look goooooooooood!  :eyebrow:  Let me just say that using cardboard templates is always a great idea.
I'm going to fab up some front spring mounts tomorrow and prep shock tabs for Wednesday or Thursday; have to chop off what's on the axle first. I'd like to do some mods to the carb but that may wait until the truck is a complete vehicle again.

Just a few pics from today:

The vertical 'welds' are filler for the cut-off disc (took off front bed mounts), not structural:

Not my best welding, I was upside-down and jacked up on Mt Dew:

Welded on the inside:

Welded on the outside too:

I'd like to hose the inside with undercoating or some sort of rust-proofing when this is all done.

Anyways... :goodnight:

Tonight's progress:

Should I make shear plates for the outside?

Inside BS: (don't grind near fuel lines BTW...)

The beard is going away on the first day of Spring, along with the hair (less burning when welding):

Slivers from the chunk of 3/16" plate:

How far back can I stick the spring hangers?

The front end will go around here:

Input welcome!!!

You should add a piece of 2x3 tubing to the back of your frame to box it in.  Then you can put the hangers on the very edge and not worry about it.  Actually if you do that, you could even hang them on the vertical part if you had to.  Just make sure that your front eye to center pin measurement (when flat) lines up with your front eye to bump stops (or where you plan to put them) measurement.

Got my flip kits today!  No washers came with it!   Luckily I have tons of old flat washers lying around so I was able to find a bunch that fit. The front set are on and look pretty dang sweet; I'm making spring mounts for the rears now. After checking out a few other builds I'm going to get some 2x3 box for the rear of the frame and sling the springs off the vertical part... unless that makes the ass-end too low, we'll see and adjust as needed later.

Forgot to stick up some pics from last night:

Flip kits are on:

Should I chop off some of the excess u-bolts or just leave 'em?

Springs are on (kinda):

This will be taken care of shortly; going to get 2x3 to go between the frame rails and hang the shackles:

It was just a little rusty: :shake_head:

Since the suspension is unloaded, what kind of angle should the shackles be? I'm still trying to get the axle back as far as I can; it looks like I got 3 inches so far... and with the overload leaf still on it sits about 1" lower than the front.
