84 reg cab CO: HALT! Now an 85 Runner
« on: Oct 11, 2009, 11:07:03 AM »
Hi everyone,
EDIT:::
I was getting an 87 4Runner but this 84 fell into my lap and I couldn't say no.

So far I have bought:
used 37" MTRs ($180), a complete 22RE with new full gasket kit ($200!), front axle with:
a Lock-Rite, 5.29s, hi-steer, 27 spline Longs/chromo inners, vented rotors/IFS calipers, spacers, Marlin brake lines and set up for hydro ($700!)
spare birfs and some old seats too.

What I'm getting sooner or later:
5.29s and Detroit for the rear axle, winch, OBA, front bumper, half doors, square front driveshaft, CB/regular radio, paint and some other stuff I forgot.

This past July I tagged along with some other members to the 4Runner Jamboree near Buena Vista (here in CO) and those are the trails I'm aiming for... maybe not Carnage though; my wheeling skills aren't too great yet. I really enjoyed doing Holy Cross, Iron Chest and Williams Pass though; my girl wants to come along but I don't know how she'd like some of the sketchier parts of those trails.

Thanks,
Dan

nice start
Any guy who takes his woman wheeling enjoys her. A woman who is owned is left at home to cook, clean, and keep beer cold. So if this offends you you should stop looking and go have some tacos.    :rofl2: And a beer. If your old enough.   :beerchug:

Thanks guys, I had been poking around for something locally for the longest time but most everything is stock-ish; some trucks had a little lift and 33s or 35s.   Hardly any were under $2000 and not worth much more than that. This Runner has all the right parts I was looking for but there's always room for improvement. It's going to be a while before I actually get it home; I'm making payments on it which is tough without a job. I'm hoping to have it trail-ready by early Spring though, I'm not in any huge hurry on this project...

I drove on those things with my 37's and the 4.3 and they didnt break and i am not afraid to get on the throttle. And no not yet I have not had the time with school. I'll pick a weekend and install the cage and assist.

Good to know about the axles; I'm keeping the 22RE for a while and will throw some "go-fast" parts in it later. Are you going exo or internal?

Here's the axle I picked up yesterday:

And the seats (since there are exactly none in it now):

If I ever paint it I'd do some stripes like these:

It'll get there...

I won the sliders from Addicted; the certificate is still sitting in my glovebox...  :shake:  Might try to put them on my ex's 79 since this runner has sliders already.

I may put in a call when I'm off of work release the 25th. Until then I'm kind of stuck at school/jail. It's a lot of fun...  ::) plus I won't know what I need until I get this puppy home; still trying to sell my Celica too. Any suggestions of where to start on the Runner? I was thinking along these lines:
front axle/steering
matching rear gears/locker
seats/interior
(by now it'll be mobile)
machine my Chevy wheels to fit the hubs and mount up the 37s
4.7s
bigger radiator
electric fan
radio/CB
winch
OBA
....................?

I'm one of those guys who runs electric fans on most everything... just because. I had an 80 K10 Chevy and I stuck 2 Cadillac Catera fans on it; no worries at all. Plus they sounded cool when they turned off.

dual T's would be the way to go... you have more of a selection of gears when on the trail.  Really nice to have opposed to a single case with a 4.7 gear set.  Good start on the build.

Duals before 4.7s eh? From what I read the process seemed to go 4.7s then duals. I guess the second case takes place of the 4.7s? Remember, I'm not a Toyota expert by any means so I don't know how stuff goes together... but I usually figure out how to take it apart.  :hammerhead:
Would the locked 5.29s and stock t-case be 'enough' to start with? It seems like people do the lower gears and 4.7s for "lower-low" gears.
At any rate I still have to sell my car and get off of work release (this Sunday!!) before I can do anything else for/with the Runner.

Patience, time and money is all it'll take...

:woohoo:
I'm out of work release and back in the shop; I am now determined to stay out of trouble more than ever. Since I got a DUI I'm looking into getting an interlock thingy in my car so I can keep my license instead of having it suspended for 1.5 years. I am going to try and get my record expunged (cleared) this week in hopes of avoiding further legal matters in the future.  :crossed:
Other than that... not much going on yet. Went up to Tin Cup yesterday in the girl's Tribeca... yes, that's what I said: Tribeca from Subaru. It made it out and back fine; I thought the street tires would let us down but they held on through the snow and we made it to the 12,200 foot top. She was happy so I was happy. Now she's interested in wheeling too; maybe this Runner will be a "His-n-Hers" build...  :smooch:

Duals will get you your stock low range of 2.28 to 1 along with 5.2 to 1 (2.28*2.28).  Going straight to a 4.7 box is nice but you will lose your stock low range.  On most trails, I usually am running in my 4.7 box, front case in high.  If it's an easy trail, I've got the front box in low and the rear box in 4H (aka stock low range).  You could get away with a 4.7 box only, but you'll be in 4th & 5th gear between obstacles on most trails.

Did you end up with that 4Runner in your first post?  What size alcan springs are on it?  What size tire are you planning on running?  If you plan on running trails no tougher than Holy Cross, I'd suggest 35's and 5.29's to make it easier to get around town and up the mtns.  35's will take you anywhere you want to go.

That sounds confusing...  :headscratch: but I'll cross that bridge later. So with duals there's no "low-low"? Hm... I have much to learn. Eh, I'll figure it out later.

It's in the "extended payment plan"... since I am unemployed and all that goodness. I think the Alcans are 5" and I have 37" MTRs and spare wheels for the trails. I'll run small radials around town; like P235/75s or something cheap. That front axle has 5.29s and I should be picking up the rear third with a Detroit and 5.29s in November; I'm thinking about selling the stock axles (open/open 4.10s?) down the line and I'm planning on having this ready for next year's CO4RJ  :crossed: .

Yes, duals have low-low.  2 stock dual cases will get you 5.2 to 1 low range.  One case with 4.7's get you 4.7 to 1 low range.  Dual cases with 4.7 gears in one case gets you 10.7 to 1 low range :)  That's also called a dual ultimate crawler setup.

It's in the "extended payment plan"... since I am unemployed and all that goodness. I think the Alcans are 5" and I have 37" MTRs and spare wheels for the trails. 37" MTR's will work great!  You'll want something bigger than 235/75's for town with 5.29's.  You'll be spinning 4K RPM at 50 mph.  35's with 5.29's put you back to stock gearing.  I'd sell the open axles for sure to get you some $$$ towards your rig.  You have until the end of July / start of August to get it done then if you are going to make the next CO4RJ!!

I got some paint to spray on my Celica (been trying to sell it forever) so here's hoping this makes it more appealing to some buyers. I'm going to try and get that Detroit w/ 5.29s this weekend or next week before all my money goes away on pesky bills. Also picked up some side work on a friend's friend's girl's 02 Nissan XTerra; some shop wrote a work ticket for $1800 that included everything from an oil change to timing belt replacement. Ah, honest mechanics... some of the noted items are BS but others are correct; we're discussing what to do first and how much. Ought to be a few bucks either way...

At the yard today I saw a loose (someone pulled it) t-case from an 86 and it got me thinking about duals... but it's forward shift. I called Ryan but I couldn't hear some of what he said thanks to my low battery, wind and weak signal. Later on I saw a 92 4Runner that looked to have a top-shift case and now I am confused (as usual) so here I go asking questions:
What years are compatible
Which case goes in front (top or front shift)
If I build duals should I go the "dual ultimate" route and get 4.7s
Does the t-case crossmember need to be moved
Will the floorboard have to be cut (I have nothing against chopping metal)

I have/will search but I'll end up forgetting what I find so I'm trying to get all the info in one spot; call me "Forgetful Jones".
