Went to the yard and picked a few brake parts to get rid of the LPSV (or whatever) tonight; am going to follow this build:
http://www.4x4spot.com/proportioning.htm
and hope for the best. I'd still like to get a big bore master cylinder down the road but at least this is a decent start towards better braking. Also picked a day/night miror since mine is neither. There's an 87 2wd that has decent doors (and they're silver) if you've got the half-door itch, Matt...  :psss:

LSPV is gone; have to bleed the brakes tomorrow. Still thinking about dropping the fuel tank to clean up the loose vacuum lines since I found a few more tonight. Am holding off on the hydro until next week just in case something decides to break/go wrong during the switch-over. Might get sliders on tomorrow too if I get up early enough  :ha_ha:

It's getting closer...  :driving:

Got the tank out; guess what? I'll give you a hint:

It sucks!!

And it's starting on the driver's side as well:

Awesome...  what the hell am I going to do with this rust? It's insane! But on the plus side I got the vacuum lines taken care of and am going to get new rubber fuel hoses since these are old brittle factory goodies.

That side of the Frame is thinner then the opposite side, Just cut it out make a cardboard template and weld in new steel, The main structure of the toyota from is the outer C not the Inner part.

Bet it sucks more in the cold...

I'm going to the yard in a few days for Chevy springs; then get/make some front hangers and check out double shackles for the rear. I'll also stitch in some metal after I hack out that little rust spot  :hahaha: . Maybe that had something to do with my death wobble, eh? Bat it didn't help the rust at all either. I'm surprised it didn't split the frame as bad as it was shaking!!

I am still in shock about that F'n rust.

I can deal with rust but it's a shock to see it that bad. I have a 67 Chevy 4x4 that needed almost an entire new floorboard; rust is not a stranger to me at all.

I'm in Colorado Springs up in Black Forest to be specific.

I was looking at that on pirate; it got me confused... but then again that happens easily.  :headscratch:

I'd take a triple flange from ya too and whatever else you're getting rid of if you sell that Runner. Don't sell your Runner, nobody else goes wheeling around here and it's risky going alone!

It's too cold to go to the yard but their inventory shows about 10 88-98 GM trucks there so I'll be able to get 63s easy. It's the front hangers I'm trying to figure out. The FAQ Bible said CJ hangers, or 3.5x3.5x1/4", or 3/16" box tube; bet I can make something at school for this. We'll see... eventually.

Jake, your 4runner is badass, Id buy it if i had the cash, Will you take Payments :D

I started on the hydro tonight; got everything undone except the box since it's WELDED TO THE FRAME!!!!!  :punish: What else... re-did the negative terminal end and ran a second ground to the engine, cleaned off the sliders (they were oily...), drank a beer or five and stared  at the IFS box in disbelief. Another thing I noticed was the bumper bracket on top of the frame is hitting the steering box; I'll notch/cut/trim it when the box is out.

Oh, and get this: even though the box is welded to the frame it still had 3 bolts on it; a 17mm, a 15mm and a 9/16" nut and bolt. The 17mm goes into the frame but is stripped out... super awesome fun time action time is here!  :shake: And the torque bar was chopped off but the frame mount is still there. Dang it, if you get rid of something get rid of ALL OF IT!!!!

Crap!

Make sure you brace the area under the steering box.  That sucks the PO welded the steering box to the frame  :slap:

I read some tech pages and getting plate steel is on "the list" for today/early next week. Would the Marlin IFS box kit work or should I just stitch some metal on the frame?

Since the box is welded on I thought about cutting it off with the chunk of frame it's attached to. Not the entire section, just the outer part that it's actually welded to. Bad idea?  :dunno: Figure it'd be okay since I'm going to weld in beter steel to mount the box to.

just take a angle grinder and go to town u will prob poke some holes in the frame... you can just make your own plate motor pretty easy.... if you have the steel .... i wouldnt take the entire frame out

Don't cut that frame out in the area around the steering box.  That area takes a ton of abuse from the big tires and steering them.  Just add some 1/4" plate like this under the steering box & on the inside of the frame rail.  I just bought a kit since I was on a time crunch but it would be easy to make them.  Make sure you fishmouth the ends so you don't have vertical welds on the frame.

Okay... what's bad about having vertical welds on a frame?  :dunno:  I may break down and get the Marlin box mount kit since Home Depot only has 2" wide 1/4" plate and the steel place I go to sells it in huge chunks and charges $20 per cut.
I'm starting the cutting process; it should be extra fun since the welds are mostly bidrpoop consistency. I wonder if I could chisel the thing off...

Got the box off; it wasn't too much "on" to start with. 1 cut-off disc and some grinding and it was off. The frame's cracked by the bole holes though... what a surprise. Anyone want an IFS box with slight weld damage?

Quick Draw

Go to K&K Surplus at around I-76 and 88th. kksurplus.com  They have lots of scrap they sell for 50 cents/pound and if they don't have it in scrap, the new is reasonable.  And they charge $5 for a cut.

EDIT:  Now I see you're in the Springs...so nevermind.  But do some searching.  There has got to be a K&K equivalent down there...  Or it may even be worth the drive.

Okay... what's bad about having vertical welds on a frame?

The shear effect.  It's easier on the frame to have a fishmount or angle cut.  Plus it's easier to weld something at a 45 degree angle compared to straight up & down.  The weld puddle is hard to control on a vertical weld.  Notice how far I had to move the box forward.  You might consider doing the same.  I had to cut the front fishmount off of the frame brace so I had to weld it vertical.  It's just recommended to have an angle.

This is the way you want your tie rod / drag link to line up, parallel

My steering is pretty parallel now; should I move the box forward anyways? The frame cracked around the bolt holes anyways... but that should be fixed with a Marlin kit and welding; right?

Hey, I have a retarded question: Should I run a stabilizer once I get the hydro installed?

Other than that, no new progress or the Rust War.
