Pulled the oil pan tonight, found bits of timing chain guide and what used to be bearing material inside. Rad:

which looks a LOT like the first time I pulled the pan:

Apparently the #4 rod bearing was evicted without warning:

I'm hoping the journal will clean up with emery cloth:

Now I know how a lot of you feel... working in small spaces:

Tomorrow I'm getting rod bearings and stuff so we'll see what happens after that. I want to get steel chain guides to replace what's left of the plastic POSs that currently take up space on the engine.

New rod bearings in, all were within spec according to trusty Plastigage and thanks to emery cloth for cleaning up the #4 rod journal. Tomorrow it'll be buttoned up and some fresh oil/filter will be lovingly applied.

Applied solvent to oil pan and valve cover, picked up 20R for possible hybrid down the road (not Prius, shut up) and got a text asking if the pile was still for sale.

Sure is; everything has its price. *

That last picture is at the house; the wife's Subaru normally lives there. My real shop looks like this:

The T-Bird's trans linkage is funky so it doesn't shift into reverse which is why the winch was employed for its extraction. Fun times.

hahahahahaha... "sweet tool"

What's this garage giveaway thing? I'd like a 3x bigger shop with a level front apron, lifts (in or above ground), plasma chopper, floor winch (for pulling stuff in), 5-ton ceiling crane, downdraft paint booth, tire machine, big-ass vise, torches, TIG welder (and skills), RJD2 bender, sheetmetal brake, nice big compressors, whatever I can get from Snap-On, Matco and MacTools, 220v wiring, sink/kitchen-ish area, cot/futon, music stuff, floor drains, heater and a disco ball.
And a 1/2 mile straight level driveway 'cause I'll get back into building fast stuff again.  :burnout:

That's not asking too much, is it?  :rofl2:

Back to reality (lame)
I'm going to rebuild the engine this winter and do up a 20/22 hybrid; have been melting my eyes searching about this combo and I think I have it figured out. Since my 22R is still knocking I'll use it since it's a pre-85 block which is "what to use"; also I won't have to buy another block/22R engine so there's a few bucks saved.
Rough plans:
tear apart my 22R
-sell leftovers
bore 22R block
regrind crank as needed
engnbldr parts
-22r to 20r carb plate
-261* cam
-timing set
rebuild 20r head
-port/polish
maybe new  :turtle: clutch depending on how bad current one is
turbo

Found out I can get the block honed at school's engine shop; don't know how I feel about letting people "learn" with my crap though...  :bat:  The savings may not be worth it if something goes wrong down the road. Here's what I've got planned so far:

Engnbldr's Master Engine Kit: Pistons, rings, full bearing set (rod bearings, main bearings, and thrust washer set), timing chain set (specify single or dual chain), oil pump, full gasket set (complete with front and rear seal and OEM style steel clad viton valve stem seals), and brass freeze plugs.
Add 261C Cam to the kit, total is      $349.00
water/oil pumps........................      $100? for both
LCE 20-22 carb adapter                     $30
Performance Toyota Valves           $58.00
Re-use 22R valves/seats---
total       $479.......... much cheaper than a $1200+ rebuilt engine

Then the actual engine work:
check and hone block, clean up crank, check head surface, port-job?, clear for o/s valves, check rocker arms, use 20R double timing chain, 22R rockers in 20R head, 22R carb w/ adapter plate, check to see how feasable welding half a 20R intake to half a 22RE intake is (I can dream) and run with it.

I hope

I did, but my 22R puked the bearings and a 20R fell in my lap... so figured a hybrid would be good until I scrape together money for a 3RZ or a completely different rig w/3.4 or whatever. I don't know why I bother making build plans since they never come together the right way. Heck, this was supposed to strat out as a SAS'd 87 4Runner and look at it now! Totally not a 4Runner.

22RE stuff is fairly easy to find in the yards anyhow.

3rz is a great motor! I love mine and it was by far the best thing i did to my truck during the rebuild. MPG is great power is great and so far faster then my buddys with the same mods done as i have on smaller tires.
87 longbed bobbed 12inches, locked, geared,Tacoma dash, 3rz swap Its a never ending project.

Re: 84 reg cab CO: engnbldr parts bad?
« Reply #556 on: Dec 10, 2010, 06:20:16 PM »
I got a random PM from a boardmember telling me NOT to use engnbldr stuff. I checked his build but found no mention of problems w/engnbldr. I also sent a PM for more info since he has done the hybrid build already, but haven't heard back yet. It seemed odd to have this come out of nowhere and without any supporting info.

So I pose the question to Marlin-land:
Has anyone had a bad experience in dealing with EB, his parts, service or whatever? During my research for my impending hybrid, I haven't heard a peep to the negative in regards to EB. I suppose there's a chance SOMEone has had stuff not perform as desired; this is an imperfect world after all. Stuff breaks/fails, your "friend" doesn't know how to machine properly, drinking while assembling an engine... etc.

I'm still moving forward on my hybrid build with EB's parts on the list. If anyone has dealt with EB please let me know how you felt, how the parts did/are doing and so on. Both positive and negative feedback is welcome!

Thanks  :beerchug:

engnbldr uses mostly rock auto parts, just at a slightly lower cost than you can get thru them normally

Here's the dude's PM; I don't know the guy so I'm not gonna bring up a name.

if youre thinking of building a 20r/22r hybrid or even any 20r or 22r, avoid engnbldr!  I used to buy a lot of engine parts from him, but I quickly learned that he provides crappy parts in a flashy box.  I have seen countless failures in these motors from ENGNBLDR's parts. you need to use JAPAN made parts and NOTHING else.  no USA bull crap parts.  Its always best to use FACTORY parts, but anything made in japan will work great.  trust me on this one, I have learned the hard way many times over and so have a lot of people I know.  basically...you get what you pay for.  engnbldr has inexpensive parts for a reason.  Definatley dont use his cams either.  He only offers 2 different cam profiles...and either one doesnt get you anywhere.  Dont use engnbldrs valves either.   Their parts work, but they dont last AT ALL.  Using their parts is asking for failure.

if youre gonna build that hybrid motor, I can give you very detailed information on what the best parts are to use (for YOUR truck) and HOW to actually set up the entire 20r/22r motor.  its not as easy as it sounds.  theres a lot of little tricks and a lot of parts that ARE NOT interchangable.  theres also many many little tweaks you can do here and there to get more power out of these motors.  I have a wealth of information about these motors that im willing to share with anyone who can use the help.  dont let the complications of this hybrid motor scare you away from doing it though.  its totally worth it!!!!!!

I agree with Japanese parts but I like the EB kit because almost everything is there; I won't have to piece everything together to get this thing going.
This week I want to start tearing apart the 20R for cleaning and such; what should I look for, keep/toss, re-use and so on? I'm keeping the head (no duh) so that is going to get checked out, luckily it has the power steering bosses too. As far as the 20R block is concerned, should I keep anything? Crank? Pistons? Con-rods? Anything?

Got the pile rolling hard on 31s...  :stopit:  it's in the shop and getting ready for heart removal/rebuild. I'm trying to come up with a nice fat list of to SELL from the two engines. I don't have much and I kinda doubt the 20R block is worth much more than a 40oz of Steel Reserve. Or three Pabst tall boys, whatever your poison. I've seen the old-school valve covers selling on ebay for about $30+ lately. That could buy the LCE carb plate I need... here's hoping more stuff can be sold to help the rebuild process.

I found out the previous owner saw fit to "weld" the top bumper mounting tabs (home-made bumper) to the frame. If these are the same anti-quality as his other welds it shouldn't be tough to remove; a strong breeze would take care of it. It was also held on by 6 grade 5 bolts, 3 were hand-loose. Awesome.

Well, progress is progress!

Trade, you say? What do you need that I have? Or how much are you looking to sell it for? I was going to re-use the 22R carb with an LCE adapter plate; also have been checking out the Weber 38s. I'm pretty open to ideas since it's still way early in the "rebuild" stage.

Today transformed this:

...into this:

Amazing what a difference an almost year can bring, eh?
The 22R is coming out Sunday, the donor 20R is going to be pulled apart as well. While working up front I'm going to:
move the steering box waa-a-a-ay forward, like 4"
re-check the wiring to get the stinking charging system to work
stick a GM alternator in
re-do battery tray area (it's just really ugly...)
re-mount the ARB compressor and find an air tank for OBA
trim fenders
do up some RUFs
get a bigger brake booster/master cylinder
wire in actual relays for stuff instead of BATT HOT/IGN HOT   :hammerhead:
LED front marker/turn lights, already have LED tails

Then I'll move into the cab:
CB mount/radio stuff
sound deadening/heat shield
half doors (finally)
heater core for good measure
...and whatever else I come across.

Then I'll go to work on the ass, ha ha ha. Basically I have plans for under-bed storage and maybe moving the fuel tank and re-doing the exhaust.

Sounds easy, right? We all know how that goes...

Will make a list tomorrow; pulling the magical bearing-eating 22R.
Offhand I have:
rear d-shaft
u-joints
IFS calipers
IFS rotors?
spindles
stock birfs (in/out)
empty carrier
stock front d-shaft
'n more.

Finally removed the 22R, tore it apart along with the 20R, sorted the pile-o-parts and checked out the differences between the heads. Crap, the engine bay looks soooo empty...   I can't wait to get this hybrid built and stick it back in. Noticed the front trans seal is leaking, awesome. Found out my clutch was pretty much toast, had really bad oil contamination on the disc and hotspots on the flywheel; danged if I could tell while driving it.
Next will be cleaning and sorting the parts; I already have a wheelbarrow-load of stuff for scrap-20R block/crank (spun #2 rod bearing), worn clutches, air pump, misc brackets/mounts and so on. Maybe it's time to invest in a parts washer...

Sure, just know we're leaving the 30th and won't be back until the 5th. I'm sure we can strike a deal for stuff.
