Dan I think the builds that don't swap oil pans either A) don't have a solid axle or hi-steer or B) had a T100 donor.  But to be honest, I haven't really read a whole lot of 3.4 builds.  It's more fun for me to figure out things for myself, so I only used the build threads here and there.  So I could be wrong...  But I would definitely just get it, and put it on while you have it on the stand.  I had the 4x4 T100 pan, and it was pretty close to working right.  For it to actually work right I had to move my axle forward about .5".  So I was one of the few that didn't swap oil pans...but it was really just pure luck.

My axle is forward about 2" and the steering box is forward about 3"-4"; I may be in the clear without knowing it. Worst comes to worst I can move stuff around and make everything fit. I'm also wondering how it'll fit if I ditch the 2" body lift... some folks lower the engine, some raise it. Damn variables!

And you forgot to say "Page 23 brought to you by Doris!"   :cheese:

Since this season is shot (no working engine) I'm aiming for next year to get this all together... I hope.

Basic plans are:
rebuild 3.4 (durrr  )
new radiator w/ fancy electric fan
find R150 trans when I need one
2.28 duals, 4.7s can wait (and I'm working-poor)
rebuild front axle 'cause it NEEDS it
rear discs/bigger vac booster (have 1" master now)
relocate fuel tank/do up fuel cell action
14" shocks, thinking 5150s
York 210 for OBA
air out fenders
sound deadener/heat shield inside cab
whip up half doors
under-bed storage
tube doors (maybe)
build some bumpers
new tires, exactly what is yet to be determined

And there you have it; a new truck!  :blah:

Dan,

Sorry on the delay, i'll try to get the ECU down to you soon!  I hope the 3.4 isnt going to be too much of a hassle for you.

Nah, vehicle hassles are my specialty: 88 Celica AllTrac, 67 Chevy K10, 70 into 69 Mustang... each one a hassle. Right now I have too many projects and am knocking them out one at a time so the 3.4 is on the back burner for now. It'll be a slow "over the winter" build since I gave up on having anything done this year. Yes it's only April, but as far as I'm concerned my wheeling season is shot.

Plus I'm researching superchargers...  :burnout:

Thanks again for the engine; someday you'll be able to se it in action!

Thanks for the offer, I may take you up on that depending on how busy the summer gets. Having a house is a lot of work! Work that I'd rather be doing on the truck... dammit.    On the up-side I should be getting some 37s again... it's just like before: get parts before the thing runs. I'll never learn. The wife and I are always looking for an 84-89 4Runner to stick my drivetrain under; people here want 2 arms and a leg for them. Last week a gal was trying to sell her son's 87 without: front clip, trans, wheels/tires for $1600.  :screwy: People are high.

Yep, I put on those sliders. I'd take that puppy in a minute; just can't afford anything right now. In a few months, yes. Now... not so much.  :sad2:

That Runner was pretty clean from what I remember; it felt really odd putting sliders on a 1000000000% stock rig though.

Picked up some used 37" TSLs with wheels yesterday; also a power steering pump for the 3.4 since it was AOWL.  Exciting stuff.  :sleepy:

if you are interested in the runner, we will cut you a deal, let me know. I'm sure you dont need the newer tires that are on there, they are a little small for your liking :)

What are you doing with the old tires?

My old MTRs went to Mr Doug and it's on 31" rollers right now.

Buy this, swap your crap, wheel the piss out of it, rebuild the 3.4 while you wheel it, done

That's the idea... it's a matter of getting the cash together as always. I'd stuff my driveline under that thing straight away... soon as I finish a few other projects that have been in "build mode" for years now.

I was hit with the brilliant idea to stuff an auto behind this 3.4 since it came from an auto 4Runner and has the wiring for it.
I can see needing:

A340F trans (durrr)
gear case adptr
x-member work
external trans cooler ('cause I can)
flex plate/torque converter

in the future; what else am I missing besides buckets of money?

Trans has its own ECU? I was under the impression of the ECU doing the work for engine and trans etc. Hm...
Engine mounts will be my design; figure some 1/4" plate will do the trick. And box the frame too; maybe 3/16" for that.
Radiator... thinking one from an 84-89 pik-m-up, but "diesel, auto trans HD capacity" as listed on rockauto.com... and it's like $80.
I'd like to run extrenal oil and trans fluid coolers from siliconeintakes.com (here in town). I used one on the Celica (+/- 5"x8"x2"), it fit like a glove and worked like a charm for the oil. Maybe a separate small fan for the trans cooler too...

Radiator:
VistaPro #433198: H/D cooling, with A/C, auto trans  $82.98

Oil cooler(s):
http://www.siliconeintakes.com/product_info.php?products_id=1110&osCsid=bc5e6f7c59441eb9255ac2176236ba01

They also sell PTFE stainless braided line and A/N fittings galore with all sorts of bends so plumbing it should be cake. "Cake", as compared to wedging this stuff in the Celica's cramped engine bay, that is.

Almost a month later and I'm going to part out the whole mess in order to build a 4Runner of some sort. I am keeping the axles/suspension; all else is for grabs:

complete cab/frame (now rust-free)
spare door glass (tinted w/vent window)
flatbed (not my construction)
all sorts of wiring
G52 trans (works fine, new shifter seats)
parts galore
sliders/hoops
4-cyl blocks/parts

I am keeping:
31" roller tires/wheels  :cheese:
axles/springs/shackles
driveshafts
f-shift t case
misc lights
4-points
stereo (like that helps to wheel)
tires n wheels (all 9 of em)
spare axle parts

Come get it; I want another truck to throw money into.  :screwy:  Clear CO title too.

Plus my wife can't fit in it when it's loaded with the malamute and camping gear.

Or my malamute can't fit in it when it's loaded with my wife and caping gear. Whatever.

It's a small cab for us.

Wish I were closer, I'd pick up a few parts from you.

Always liked this build (even though you could never make up your mind ) One of the first builds I started looking at and following after I got my 84 standard cab and joined the site. Interested to see what you do inn your next build.

Thanks, saying I am indecisive is an understatement...  :blah:  I have ADD when it comes to vehicles; that is why there are 4 "long-term projects" sitting around my shop but none are in it.

If the stuff was smaller I'd ship, but a cab is a bit big for any flat-rate box.

Okay, here goes: the prices are based off of junk yard prices here in town (U-Pull n Pay)

Cab: $250 with glass
Doors: $100/pair complete
Flatbed: $200 (I might keep the LED lights)
Frame: $150 with sliders/shock hoops
Hood: $40
Seats: $50/pair, I might keep these... not sure yet
G52 trans: $100
leftover 22R parts: block/crank/rods/flywheels/cams/whatever else is laying around: $100

Prices are OBO; let me know what you think.

Sorry to hear that the '84 isn't going to come together...  But hey I don't blame you.  If you're going to go to all of the trouble to more or less do a frame up rebuild and motor swap, you might as well do it to a truck that works for you.  Have you thought about putting a 4Runner body on your frame?  You might have to bob it...but that would be cool.  :D

Or better yet, bob and chop!  I always wanted to do this...but not such a stupid looking stance.  Level it out down low with some 37s and that would look awesome.

Well... we'll see what happens after the dust settles. Currently there's another 4Runner for $1000; 22RE/auto/tilt-inclinometer too. Gotta get rid of the 84 first then start another build thread.

Oh, scored a top-shift case today with an e-brake and square d-shaft... for pretty dang cheap:

Are the notches supposed to be on the input?

Picked up another t-case; this time it was attached to one of those funky side-shift trans... but hey, for $25 I'm not complaining. It's already clean too! How cool is that?

Had a short day at work so I went and pulled apart the latest t-case... yes, that is water.

 :rivers:

Maybe $25 was too much after all. I was playing with the shifter and I swear it feels like there's no neutral; 2H 4H and 4L yes... but no neutral. I was figuring on building my duals with 23-spline goodies anyway; will that take care of any/all rusted bearings?

Shift forks:

The gear oil was blacker than the south end of a northbound cow at midnight and the t-case input has a bunch of boogery business that just looks really bad. Again, plan on 23-spline stuff so this shouldn't be an issue. I'll post actual pics soon; all I had was phone camera today.

What say you: run it, part it or junk it? I may know of another local top-shift... but not for $25.
