It'll have to be the Runner; dude just now tells me the Tacoma got sold just after I called him this morning. Said he was going to be outta home for 1-2 hours so I call; no answer. Sends a text, tells me it's gone. Dammit... it was just down the street so we went to try and find it too; no luck.

The Runner is acceptable to me; some rust (no surprise) but overall decent shape for an 88. I'm thinking $900 or so; we'll see what happens tomorrow afternoon.

I don't care about the rust but it is a bartering point... and I kinda like the blue. I haven't seen too many early Yotas that color.

I'd sell:
A/C stuff
rear heater
bumpers
side pieces
mud flaps
tailgate/glass (to do truck tailgate mod)
IFS box
rear axle
wheels n tires
3.slow
chain-drive t-case (or scrap)
fancy grille

Didn't get it, missed a few other Yotas, sold more bits-n-pieces from the 84 and picked up a 92 Civic along the way.

Messing with the idea of making the 84 into an F-toy kinda thing... lotsa tube work and such. However, there's an 87 4Runner (I may have posted earlier) that is being offered for $1000; it was $2200 a few months ago and the guy just wants it to go away.

Also thought about modifying the CRX's shell to fit the 84's cab floor and making some kinda custom crazy crawler outta it... sticking tons under it too. Why not?  :screwy:

Well, got a guy coming by tomorrow to get the cab and maybe the frame which leaves me to ask:

"How does one start building a tube-framed rig?"

I kinda don't want to... I'd rather keep the frame and run tube off of it.

We'll be seeing ya on the trail 10 years from now if you go that route.  Building your own tube buggy is a PITA.  If you're headed that way, just go Hendrix Chassis.  Or just buy a 1st gen 4Runner like you've been talking about for the last 1.5 years and go that direction.

Dude bailed on the cab, nobody is serious about any parts, just a lot of calls "Do you still have x-y-z? Okay, thanks." Click...

I figure I'll just build off of what's left... which is pretty much everything.

There are the minor details of:
engine wiring
--getting original ECU this week
--3.4 swaps harness?
trans
--got a 5-spd from a 98 w/flywheel
seats/interior
--stockers and bedliner
--heat shiled/rubber mat
doors?
--half or none
hood
fenders
--optional; wiring is inboard
bumpers
--non-stinger front, beefy rear
duals
--duh
bed?
24" wheels
:bling:

Easy, right? I figure if I end up exo-ing this I'll run tube doors built into the cage; maybe have some plexiglass door panels or something. Who the F knows...

>>Dan

edit: Oddly enough, I saw that 4Runner rolling down I25 this morning; still had the same stickers on the rear glass.

Figured a month.5 was a long enough break...

Picked up an R150 trans from a 98 Taco, scored a 2-piston York from the yard (and it's not busted up this time), got a rear Ford fuel tank from a buddy (with sender/wiring) and have been gathering info and more pieces to get hopping on this puppy in the next few months. I'm starting to get excited about this again; should be pretty sweet whenever it gets "done"... or at least running.

From an 83/84 VW Cabrio of all things:

Deuce!

The tag info is:
No: ESC 211683
Pt: 1718 20805XHM
08-83

I'm not 100% sure what its specs are but the clutch still works, it has suction/pressure and it's a twin piston... a win in my book! I have a 5-gallon air tank that will be used for OBA; now to figure out where it'll all fit.

Scored a front end today: fenders, hood, doors grille and markers for $100... I was tempted to get a Taco grille and "make it fit" but that'll have to wait. Dude has a LOT MORE 84-89 body parts; radiators, shrouds, d-shafts, spring hangers, engines, a few trans... bought a 98 V6 trans/case for $100 and sold the t-case for $80 today.

Doors need panels but that's no big deal. They're in decent shape and I'm not worried about any dents/rust since they're going on a trail rig.

Planning on running rear discs with some SFA calipers since they're laying around... oughta be fun. I already have a 1" MC and an adjustable porpotion valve; just need flex lines or custom hard lines.

In due time...

The same 84 reg cab... since nobody bought the cab when I was parting it out, I figured "WTF... might as well build it back up again". I was looking at the pile-o-parts today... seems like once I get the engine situated, stab in the trans, fart out $$ for a R150 to gear case adaptor, a dual adaptor, get 23 spline stuff and 4.7s it should be easy. Then the wiring. Exhaust. Plumb the Ford fuel tank. Build a bed/storage. On-board air. Welder. Interior. Paint. Exo. Tires. Fakk....  :outtahere:

Holy crap... that is gonna be painful.

New year, new(ish) parts... got a 2WD T100 oil pan coming and picked up the 3.4s ECU from Okiyota today. Thanks again Tommy!   I still owe you a meal at Kings Chef whenever the stars align.

Today I spent a few hours reading 3.4 swaps over on yota tech and have printed out many diagrams to assist with the wiring. Now to unearth the 84's wiring from the depths of the "storage cab" and get it cleaned off. Of all the swaps, Elvota's stuck me as being the most complete and COMPREHENSIVE (easy-to-follow) swap out there... so that's the one I will be following. Yes, his swap was into a 90s 4Runner that had 3.oh-no power and mine is nowhere near that, but the wiring is key and there were a few other perks in his build I'm going to use. I'm not too worried about the nut-n-bolt aspect of this swap, just the wiring.

Tomorrow I'm going to get the wiring diagrams all together and make a master diagram so I can build my own harness. Sorry ORS, but I just don't have the $ to spend on an awesome harness...

This is gonna be fun!  :disturbed:

Dan, do you still have all of those diagrams direct from Toyota that I sent you?  I still have them saved on my computer under "Dan's 3.4 Swap" ...  If you do still have that file, the main one you will be using is titled "engine control".  There are versions for both 98 and 99 4Runners, because you said you weren't sure which your engine was.  That file should literally have EVERYTHING you need document wise.  That's all I had to do my swap in addition to several more documents that I wish I had.  If you need for me to resend you those, let me know.

BTW, Off Road Solutions went out of business about 4 years ago...  It used to be located just down the road from the house I grew up in.  When I got into Toyotas around the age of 16, I used to go in and bug Mike and Una in there all the time.  But last I heard Mike is still kicking around somewhere, and could potentially be reopening in a new location not in CO.  But so far, the website says they are still closed.

Yes I do; they are being printed off this morning. The ECU and wiring part numbers cinfirm I have a 98 4Runner engine/ECU so that's what I'm going with. The trans was from a 98 Tacoma as well so this al should work without too many problems. :crossed:

I remember hearing about ORS going away but also something about them coming back? I've emailed Mike a few times about this swap but like i said I just can't shell out the green for the harness. Hell, for that price I can get the R150 to case and dual adapters and be that much closer to running this pig.

This week will be interesting since wiring seems to give people all kinds of hell; here's hoping I'm not one of them. Preperation and good soldering are key, apparently.

I am building this with 23 spline stuff 'cause that's what the cool kids do; unless it can be swapped from 21 to 23 somehow? I'm not familiar with the internal bits yet... still doing the wiring business. And how much $$ ?

it was 360 new shipped to me, it has less than 400 miles on it, so 270 plus shipping takes it
and u can get the 23 spline coupler for it too, marlin and inchmorm both sell them

Yeah, but one of "your miles" is greater than or equal to 5 "normal miles" to anyone else...  :gap:

Sounds tempting... we'll see what happens in the next few months. I finally sent you $ for rear disc tabs today; damn post offices have been busier than a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest.

The magical T100 2wd oil pan oughta be here tomorrow/soon, got a remote oil filter dealie from Summit today, worked on more wiring... so far I have stripped down both 84 harnesses (I had a fire and got a spare) and labeled whatever I could. Now to make it work with the 98's harness... fun. Only 5 days until I go back to work; think I can get a harness built by then?

Me neither; I'm lazy and it's been in the f'n 60s this week. Gotta love "winter" in Colorado...  but I bet we get a few feet of snow in April.

3.crap to 4.3 is a helluva upgrade... I'll keep it in mind after these next few paychecks; got to get caught up on holiday spending.

Today the magical 2wd T100 oil pan came by; yay UPS! Cost about $50 with shipping from a junkyard in Missourri; it's worth it even if the local pick-n-pull has oil pans for $25 or so. But then I'd have to find a damn 2wd T100 first, hope the pan didn't get punched for some reason, pull it, get greasy as hell and still pay $2 to get in the gate.

$50 shipped? Sure!  :hammerhead:

Got the rear disc tabs from bogger, set them on the "Hopes and Dreams" pile that almost fell over on me, picked up four "slightly used" wheels I traded my decent wheels for (I don't care about wheels right now) and am trying to work a deal to grab another 4Runner frame and body from a TTORA member here in Colorado. He's parting it out but I just need the carcass... looks like I'll be building a 4Runner after all! Oh yeah, it needs a topper and maybe a tailgate.  Details...

New build thread? Oh yes... yes.

So if anyone wants an 84 reg-cab and/or frame (set up for 63s) let me know otherwise it's going to scrap.

Damn man, seems like it takes you as long to build rigs as me   Excited to see the new build, always liked this one, that is if you ever start it  :gap:

Ryan, the guy I got my sheet metal from has a bunch more; all $20 each. He's kind of hard to get ahold of but he's home most weekends; out in Falcon.

I'm waiting for the word so I can get this 4Runner shell; this weekend I may clean out the 84's cab to get it ready for a-scrappin'. After that, all I'll need to do is unbolt the springs and say goodbye to the rest... which isn't much. I oughta save the front glass since it's in decent shape.

I'm already messing around with colors at work... in the yellow category, but brighter somehow.  8)

It's over; I picked up an 85 4Runner body-n-frame this week and it's waiting for the snow to stop so I can unload it and get hot on it. Now I have a spare hood, grille, doors and fenders; the firewall is already tubbed and the fenders have also been cut out. It has rust in the quarters (don't care) but otherwise is in pretty good shape. The mirrors are intact and matching too! It's an SR5 so it has the tilt column (keeping) sunroof and tilt/incline-o-meter (keeping). I think nearly all the EFI wiring is there along with the ECU, that may get pulled/sold once I get back to wiring the 3.4 into it.

The 84 still has to be fully gutted (springs, glass, dash stuff etc...) then it's going bye-bye. The wife asked, "How much would it cost to build it back up again so we both have crawlers?"
