well got my solid front axle now. gm 10 bolt with 3.73 gears, passanger side drop, warn hubs, complete from hub to hub minus the drag link and the brake calipers. got it for 100 bucks. unfortunatly, its one heavy sob  so i'm gonna have to recruit some help getting it outta my suburban. its makin my ass sit at a 2wd height.

other things i need for my sas:
leaf springs, probably goin 56" springs
metal to make the mounts, i'll us 3/8" plate
drag link
shackles

then i'll need a place to do the work. anybody wanna help out once i'm all set? might do my engine/tranny/t-case swap at the same time, or i'll make the axle driver side drop. if i keep it pass side i'll need a t-case that can withstand 400 ft/lbs of torque from the diesel that i'll be dropping in, and i'd like to be able to get good gearing for the t-case. i know a np205 would survive the torque easily, but the gearing of 1.96 is :pokinit:!!! and the doubler for it is about 700 bucks. i could get a dana 300 for about 2-300 bucks, put a new input/output shaft in it, regear to 4:1, for about 1200. how much power would a toyota t-case live up to? i'd love to put a marlin crawler doubler setup under my suburban because the slower i go the less body damage i'll get.

i dont need a dana 60 yet, nor can i afford one for a LONG TIME!!!!
i'll be running 35 or 36"s, and a 10 bolt with chromoly shafts will survive that.
another reason i got this axle is because it already has matching gears to what i have right now, and the only things its missing are cross over steering, brake calipers, and a drag link. figure i could make my own drag link from dom tubing and get those weld in inserts for 15 bucks, then get either some new tie rod ends for it or go ahead and get the heim joints.

I dont know even with chromoly shafts a ten bolt  think of it like this....your putting a diesel in that truck and your lifting it and adding bigger tires....a ten bolt is limited at like a 35 inch tire with the stock weight but then a diesel...i dont know :dunno:

guy i bought it from pulled it out from under his 1980 blazer with 36" military tires and a 454. if i happen to find a dana 60 in a local junk yard, for a reasonable price, then i'll pick it up. i know the 10 bolt will be my week point, but for my initial sas it will do its job. when i 1st do the sas i'll probably run 32 or 33" tires, i'll see how it holds up then. should survive just fine, and if i do break something its a very easy axle to fix and cheap.

it would probably be easier for me to take the axles/engine from the old military truck than for me to modify its frame to mount my suburbans body.
if i could sell my suburban for about 4500 (what i paid including interest, less than what its worth here in texas by about 1,000 bucks), and found an old military cucv pickup or blazer in good shape, i'd do it in a heartbeat. but with gas where it is right now, i really doubt that i could sell my suburban. i might give it a shot though once i get my motorcycle and license for it, then start shoppin around for a cucv.

hmmm, i gotta admit that 85 4runner is very tempting. any more details about it? did you see it in nacadoches, and where is nacadoches? guess if i have to tow something i could just rent a truck.
