your buddy didn't start this thread by any chance, did he?  read through it when you get a chance.  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=81098.0
makes want to drain it and put grease in it

superyota

it should drain on its own and make a mess everywhere if he already put it in there.  I really hope he packs the trunions full of grease.  you might want to check your wheel bearings too and make sure oil didn't get in there either.  people like that drive me nuts.  they don't know what the heck they're doing and throw in their  :twocents: and get paid for it.  I would take it back to him and tell him he messed it up and have him pull it all apart and do it right.

Tell your mechanic to read the FSM next time.

Peterbuilt84

Definitely wrong to put oil in the knuckles, just use grease. That's what the axle seals do, keep oil out of the knuckles.

Like the new tow pig :smokin: Diesel?

SloCrawler

I'm not fully convinced, the felt isn't met to seal fluid only keep it clean for the rubber inner seal. He's a very good mechanic. He builds 1100hp cars and does he's research.  He called one of his distributers and they confirmed the oil in the closed nuckles, I believe a half quart. It's been setup since Saturday and has not leaked yet.

If you trust him... run it and tell us it works :dunno: but he FSM tells to use moly grease.

SloCrawler

If I can't find proof of this not being ok ill Probly just run it, the truck is trailored, if it becomes a problem ill have to clean em out and grease them. I noticed I have to clearance my gussets there hitting the felt rings

Peterbuilt84

Factory service manual. There's a link to download them somewhere on the site, check the FAQ.

I would probably tear the front knuckles apart and and clean the oil out.  your trunions need grease.  i'm guessing grease was never put on them before they were filled with oil.

get everything ready and i'll come by and help you when I get there this weekend.  If you could either drive it or trailer it to borja's house, that would be even better.  let me know.

I was going to try and get started buzzing off hanger and cleaned up. I git plasma and welder hooked up on side yard too so let me know whats best.

yea, i'm talking about sean.  I ordered up a set of injectors and a ecu for him yesterday.  he should have it before the weekend.  it would be easier to do in the garage with some shade.  get as much done as you can.  what ever your not able to finish we can take care of this weekend.  This is going to be a super busy weekend.  We have your truck to finish up, swap injectors and ecu on sean's, i still need to finish building the dual cases on my dads truck, and also this is last weekend I have to finish up my cage and change out my studs before the roundup.  gonna be one crazy weekend.  going to get all my stuff squared away in bakersfield friday and i'll be there either late friday night or early saturday morning.  i'll call you when I get there.  but try to do as much as you can.

From the longfield website,
"5. Now you're ready to put the birfield
and inner shaft in the housing.
Make sure you put grease around
the spindle bushing area on the birfield and the seal area of
the shaft this helps the bigger shaft to slide into the seal
without damaging it. You have to slide the shaft in push
down and inward on the birfield and at the same time turn
your drive shaft back and forth to line up the splines. After
everything is installed
pull the square plug out
of your knuckle and
pump about ½ a tube of
grease in each side."

Thanks, i never pulled a birf before, about to find out how hard it realy is..

superyota

oh yea, when you pull it apart to back your trunions full of grease since they probably never got packed or washed out, repack the birfs too since they probably got all the grease washed.  Mechanics drive me nuts.  especially when they don't know what the heck they're doing.
