I'm not sure if it was ever mentioned, but since Glen is adamant about building up a first gen, I'm all about building a bobbed longbed. You get the bed length of a shortbed, less overhang, and a longer wheelbase.  :beerchug: Woo hoo for that one!
The only down fall woud be the breakover angles, and turning radious. A shorter wheelbase will make it easier to get into those mall parking spots. A flat bottom would help with the breakover angles. Its still easier to drag the back bumper than it is to get unstuck after being bellied out on an obistacle. I think the best options lie somewhere between.

Hug your kids, pray for a soldier, and don't sweat the small stuff.

With a seriously fat wallet, I believe Glen is on to something. He tried to give me his vision for it, but I got lost when he tried to tell me about using a t-case between the rear two axles. It was wild, but I'm kinda intrigued!

Hmm, I can see that. Get the divorced adapter, and mount it between the 2 rear axles. Reverse the "front" rear axle, and drive it with the front output. Drive the "rear" rear axle with the rear output. Then you could have 2X6, 4X6, or 6X6. Would you need special gears for the "front" rear axle??

Glen, you have enough rear axles, you should give it a shot with that longbed frame. :cheese: You need that divorced adapter though

That's the thought, but I'm not sure there would be enough driveshaft from the rear t-case to make it work. They would be quite short, and the box will have to be quite low as well.

There is a fella here in town with a divorced adapter (OTT I think) with a built in ebrake for 350 bones.

You could always use some sort of airbags to raise the front/rear axle in order to get it off the road when needed, and to handle heavier loads....kinda like a dummy axle on a gravel truck.

Flipping a rear axle around would cause it to drive off the coast side of the gears like a front diff so no special gears would be needed.

A samuari tcase might be a good option too, as it would allow the inputs and outputs to be used accordingly, becouse the outputs are inline. You could even tilt it 90* out to have the input directly above the front axle housing. This would require a new fill plug on the case but who can't drill and tap a hole in aluminum. It might even be possible to mount the tcase to one of the housings and then you would need a coupler/adapter there and one small drive shaft to the rear axle. Fix up an air shifter and you could have a low range for just the rear axles.

You would be looking at haing a sizeable distance between the rear axles. This is all simmilar to what heavy duty(read semi, logging) trucks are offered with. 2speed rearaxles, 6wd, its been done, but I've never seen it on a toyota.

Cheesemaker

He needs the early 80's nissan divorced transfer case for the 6x6.  Has a high input with the outputs lower.  Plus they are tough t-cases.  Chain driven, but tough.  Can go from 2hi to 4hi on the fly!
Just turn around the front rear axle and put a high pinion in it!

There is a guy that runs the TSF with a jeep that has 6x6, I never got close enough to see how he did it!

Just out of curiosity what is the swb length and how much longer is the long....  Just so I know what you yota guys are talkin about...  But I always understood that the best wheelbase for trail ridin is over 100 and under 120, so I vot for the one that fits in there...

X2, For the trails he runs a shorter wheelbase is better imho! Stock wheelbase is 103" and I run 106" with 36's and still get hung up regularly on some of the more extreme stuff.

Glen what size tires are you planning on running?  What effect do larger tires have on wheelbase? (obviousely it would make it a bit shorter as far as contact times)

If your going to try 6x6 wouldnt it be easier to use axles desighned for it?  rockwells would be alot easier to do 6x6....  How cool would you be!!!

And with 3 steer axles even cooler!!!   You couldnt beat the girls off you with a stick, probably not even the boys!!!

Are you really concideering 6x6 glen?  Do you guys have any pics of how these dual rear outputs are set up for 6x6 I cant picture it, seems like the shaft to the rear axle would always be hitting the front axle...
