i would like to see some more partial exos on some 4runners. Has anyone went from the rock sliders to make fender tubes?? i thought about doing it to mine but havent seen any one do it. maybe go from the rock slider to the rear bumper for some fender protection.
When in doubt throttle out!

it means

drawn
over
mandrel

or in other words, seamless.

:talkingn: DOM isnt "seamless" tube  ;)

The DOM Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing process for DOM tubing begins with coils of steel, which are slit to the proper width for the desired tube size. The strip is cold formed and passed through an electric resistance welder which joins the edges together, under pressure, to complete the tubular shape. After testing the weld's integrity, the tubing is cut to length for further processing.

The cold-drawing process creates a uniform, precision product with substantially improved tolerances, surface finish and tensile strength, increased hardness and good machinability. In this process, the tube is cleaned and annealed, and one end of each length is squeezed to a point so it can be gripped by the drawing mechanism. The tube is then drawn through one or more dies and over mandrels. This reduces the diameter of the tube and thins its walls to the required dimensions in a controlled fashion to provide the qualities desired in the finished product. Metallurgically, drawing improves the tube's concentricity, tensile strength, hardness and machinability. Close dimensional accuracy is achieved through tight control of both outside and inside diameters.

Hi, I was wondering if any body has seen or thought about doing what essentially would be a windshield only partial exo cage.  This would be like a regular cage in the back of the cab, but it would come out of the cab just above the top corners of the windshield and then from then on it would continue just as a normal exo cage.  This would provide several advantages, combining several good aspects of both traditional and exo cages.  Because a good portion of the cage is in the cab it would allow you to still do things like easily tying seats and seatbelts directly to the cage, as well as keeping a low profile and eliminating some of the ugly factor of exos, and it would be less likely to get caught up on obstacles.  But because it com,es out at the top of the A-pillars, it would still provide protection to the windshield itself.  Obviously this type of cage will not protect most of the outside  of the cab, but there are many outhere that do not necessarily care about body damage, but don't appreciate burning through windshields all the time.  The big thing with this would be sealing between the tube and where it cuts through the body.  So does anybody have any pictures of or ideas on this?

i get it. instead of that most people just make some roof and/or a pillir sliders. you would just have a normal interior cage then hole saw a few spots and basically make sliders.

oh and for sealing the holes, expanding foam works great! spooge it around the tube and then cut the excess off with a razor blade

That would be sik! Just make a main hoop inside the cab and have the a pillars welded to it like normal. But instaed of going down to the floor board (which takes up way too much space IMO) just run it out the front/top of the cab and down to the slider. You could run the cross bar either inside the cab right before the tube goes through the to or outside right when it comes out the top.

I think Steve and Jud understand what I am saying.  If you still don't get it, imagine the exo on the Mossy Runner, only do the exact opposite if that makes sense.  As far as the cross bar, I am personally planning on putting it outside of the truck, bent out slightly to match the profile of the windshield, with bracing going down in the center to a tube over the cowl...or I may end up just cutting off the whole front clip and just tube it out up there...we will have to see what happens once I get back home from college.  Another benefit of this for me is the fact that my cab corners are smashed up anyways from rolling it, so this could provide a chance to smooth them out some and make the truck look nice again (too bad I have decided that will never happen lol), but for others in that situation it could be a good chance to save the cab on an otherwise good truck.

I love that idea! It really has me thinking to change my whole cage design.

It looks like you could take it off from the top. I'd weld all that up and then weld it to the sliders. I really like the design.

DOM starts out as a solid piece of stock. It is then drill out in the middle. This makes it seamless and therefore stronger the a piece that is turned and welded to form a seam.

Seriously?  Wow, you need to find whoever told you that and kick them straight in the sack for being fully retarded.

DOM is tubing just like all the rest, it starts out as a piece of flat bar and is rolled then welded.  Crawlerdan pointed out the difference, DOM is regular tubing that is Drawn Over a Mandrel to normalize the wall thickness and remove the seam.
