  to convert the engine  to a mechanical pump is possible using a L series pump  but there is more to it than you think because the L series engine is timed on No1 cylinder where as the 1KZ is timed on No4 cylinder ie 180 degrees out
Before I installed my 1-KZ  I made it run off a std 3L pump on the shed floor  but I had to remove the cam gear first and machine another keyway in it 180 degrees out  and refit to the engine useing the new keyway for it to run
I took my 3L pump to an diesel  shop to convert the 3L pump to 1-KZT  and they rebuilt everything  including a new pump body because after 400000 kms the body is worn from the vane lift pump in the mounting end of the body  they also installed a new distributive head ( the metal plate that the 4 injector check valves screw into ) for a 1-KZt  which has bigger holes in it for the greater amount of diesel required , the  bloke  who did the job was the first in australia to do this conversion   and he thought the 3L pump  might be up to it   so he rebuilt a std 3L pump for another customer  and stuck it on the Hartridge machine to set it up and screwed the pump to the max fuel delivery to see how much the pump produced and it still fell short of what was required for the 1-KZT 
 Also you want a boost compensator fitter to the pump to stop overfuelling off boost
own a 1989  LN106r diesel with a 1KZ-T 3 litre turbo diesel  bolted to a imported R151F gearbox with snorkel Rancho springs & shocks & Detroit lockers F & R & 11x 32  cooper sst ultimate dual transfer cases 130 litre fuel tank   full floating disc brake rear end

Thanks cavey! Very valuable info. From the sources I have checked with the OEM pump is no longer available. Is it still available in Australia?

no it was never available in australia only the 1-KZTE  the T is from europe    although i have seen them on ebay for $2500 
 I gave the diesel shop the part number and he found all the relevant parts for the 1-KZT , the distributive head came from singapore

 While the truck had been apart waiting on the motor the driveshaft seized for some reason unknown to me. Zippo and I had tried heat and ratchet straps but it wouldn't budge so I set it aside for another day. With the snow we got this week getting my front driveshaft installed became a priority. So I made a press tool that wouldn't take no for an answer. Using a hole saw I drilled a 1-5/8" hole in both the aluminum plate and the steel plate then cut a notch out of both with the band saw. On the steel plate I drilled four 33/64" holes and tapped them for 9/16-18 threads and installed grade 8 bolts in them. with the aluminum I needed to make the edge rounded over to match the shape of the driveshaft. I used my router with a roundover bit and bearing which work beautifully. Once it was all done I installed it on the driveshaft and started to tighten the bolts it started pressing it open. I used pieces of 2" ABS pipe as spacers when I came to the end the bolt threads. 4WD is now working!

All of this pump trouble makes me want to do what "willymammoth" is doing and bolt a 4M40 pump on my motor.

Cant blame you one bit. A fully mechanical pump is the only way to have a diesel. This common rail and electronic controlled VP style pump is good for easy tuning but not for longevity and simplicity.

DONE! I pulled the trigger on that pump. Its on its way over from England. Im thinking new injectors would be a good idea as well.

New genuine Toyota injectors ordered.

Arrived today. And the pump is likely awaiting me at the post office. they left me a delivery notice today which they usually only do when it is an international shipment.
