Nate, when You say that You checked the power and grounds? voltage drop or just test light?
I havenít checked the power yet but when i was checking the grounds i was using an ohmeter checking for continuity.

I havenít checked the power yet but when i was checking the grounds i was using an ohmeter checking for continuity.
I highly recommend testing using a voltage drop. A continuity tests will pass when a voltage drop will fail and show You the problem.

Just a 28 year old pump cleaned up and rebuilt by the local Bosch shop. It worked fine but when adjusting the fuel screw I found out the previous owner bent it and it was broken. Whole pump had to be disassembled to replace that small part so I had them do a full rebuild. Hoping this will give you a little judge towards the mechanical pump.  :eyebrow:

I got a chance today to open the engine up a little and check the timing. To my disappointment everything looks good. I want to find this problem.
I did take for a short spin around the block the other day. Once the motor gets off idle it has excellent power.

Has the pump been rebuilt? Or cleaned? How long has it sat with old fuel that could varnish?

Has the pump been rebuilt? Or cleaned? How long has it sat with old fuel that could varnish?

No it hasnít been rebuilt. No it hasnít been cleaned. It has sat for 2 years with old fuel in it. Talking to Steve, he has the same line of thinking. Im gonna try a spare ECU and if that doesnt fix the problem its likely the pump. Him and his friend Scott who is a diesel pump whisperer are considering modifying a 2L-t pump to have more otput so it would work on a 1KZ-te. Essentialy converting it to a manual pump. At the very least Iíll have to send my pump to him to have it built. Itís $1000 to have it done here.

Personally I would just bite the bullet and go with a mechanical pump. I'm sure someone would purchase yours.

 If it only has the issue at low rpm and otherwise is fine I would think it is related to sitting with old fuel in it for so long.

I just tried the spare ECU. There was no change. So by process of elimination it must be the pump.

No. The only cleaner you are supposed to use if it is apart is diesel. I suppose i could put some diesel fuel treatment in the fuel tank but i dont think it would do enough to make the difference. Only thing left that I still havent ruled out is checking all the connections and checking for a fault code.

But if the alternative is to rebuild the pump, would a cleaner hurt?


What about the injectors?

At low rpm (low fuel flow) mismatched fuel would be more apparent.


Any way to do the equivalent of 'pull the spark plug wire' on a diesel?

Unfortunately no, best you can do is shoot the exhaust manifold with a temp gun to see if there is a difference in temp from cyl to cyl. On the injector thought, have they been cleaned atleast? If you have issues with expensive places up there, my local Bosch dealer just cleaned 6 for me and it was $80. You could send them to me and I can have it done if need be.

Thanks for offering. I might take you up on that. Itís silly because itís essentially a bosch VE-3 copy.

is it done yet?

I've been driving it to work lately trying to burn through this 2 year old fuel in the tank. I got some help this week when the fuel return line popped off the injectors and distributed about 7 gallons of diesel along my commute. I didn't know it was happening until I got home and saw it pouring out of the engine compartment onto the road.  :shake:
I guess I'm supposed to have clamps on that hose? :dunno:
in other news old blue's transfer case has a bearing going out in it. It is rattling so bad that it loosend a few bolts in the transmission causing it to leak oil. Transfer case rebuild kit is on order. honestly I'm surprised it held up this long. I remember seeing rust in it when we put it in getting ready for the round-up.

The old clutch that I put  back in has been slipping bad lately. Last week I almost got stuck on a hill. I haven't been able to find a replacement for this mystery Taiwanese flywheel that I have so I ordered a genuine Toyota solid mass flywheel from ebay. It's coming from Steve's island so it'll take about two weeks to arrive. My brand new power steering pump showed up yesterday, so that is ready to be installed. My genuine Toyota fuel return hose with it's clamps also showed up. Try finding 4mm fuel hose at your local auto parts store. You wont find it. Once these parts arrive I can install them and then try to figure out why my ECU is in limp mode.

Last night two shipments arrived. A transfer case rebuild kit from Marlin for blue and a genuine Toyota flywheel from Toyota Europe for the goat. I just need a little time to install all these parts now. Earlier this week I had fuel line burst thst took up the time I was going to spend working on diagnosing other problems. Iím gonna take a thermal image of the engine while running as redneckcustoms suggested.

doesn't show much. I think the exhaust heat shield is dissipating the heat too much.
