Until they are sold, are they ever really done?

Dunno, you may be the expert on that...

It will never be done. There always changes that can be made, different turbos, better axles and suspension, fun gadgets to build for the interior.

Yeah but is it done yet?

"Done" is defined as you're able to use it as originally planned and if you never added anything it would be a want and not a need.

I must have missed it - Did the 1KZ-TE swap into the 1988 4Runner require new engine mounts and custom oil pan? I thought the 3VZ-FE, 5VZ-FE, and 1KZ-TE all shared the same engine mounts and trans (R150/151)?

The 4runner is an 1987. So it came with a 22-RE. Yes I did have to fabricate motor mounts. I ended up redoing them when I rebuilt the motor to lower it and give them a better angle. There were photos of the work on page 17

Thanks so much for the info.

I want to swap a 1KZ-TE into a 1st gen Tacoma. Do you know if the R150F transmissions are the same between the 1KZ-TE and the 3.4 liter 5VZ-FE? I thought I read that the bellhousing and input shaft is slightly longer on the 1KZ-TE version. Can I just use my original 5VZ-FE transmission and bellhousing on the back of the 1KZ-TE engine? I realize you used a R151F transmission.

TIA!

The bellhousing on the 1KZ-te is specific to that engine and has the starter motor on the opposite side. The bellhousing is still available from Toyota Europe brand new. The input shaft I believe is also still available. This would allow you to use your R-150f I obviously haven’t  done this but it seems like I have heard of others doing it. I dont see any reason why it couldn’t be done.

Rockcrawlintoy and I are trying to figure out at time that we both have off work so we can go wheeling. Does that meet the definition?

10-4. Did your 1KZ-TE engine come with an R151F (and appropriate bellhousing/input shaft)?

No. It came with an auto. I had to hunt down a R151f and order the bellhousing, flywheel, and clutch

Way back in the very beginning of this thread you mentioned a sweet custom triple stick setup for your duals; do you have any details you'd be willing to share?  you mentioned it was different from the radesign's setup in that it didn't require a bodylift/trans tunnel cutting.  getting ready to put duals in an 85 surf and your triples sound very intriguing

Yeah. I’ll have to dig up those photos and post pictures.

Not the greatest photos but you can kind of see what I did. I made two low profile housings, one for each T-case. Then I used some brass o-ring fittings to seal around the sliding rods so that don't leak oil. I added a breather to each housing since the t-cases are vented through the shifters. each sliding rod is attached to a finger that engages the shifter rods inside each of the t-cases. each rod is connected through a linkage to a shift lever. it works very well and has only let me down once when my motor mounts tore off on a trail and bent one of the rods and left me stuck in low range. I was able to fix it on the trail, but I had to limp home to fix the motor mounts. since then the motor mounts have been completely re-done.

did you have to do any trans tunnel cutting with this setup?  left and right links look like they'd clear just fine; definitely a slick setup

No tunnel cutting at all. I bent the linkages so they would clear. A setup like this would almost be mandatory on a pickup with a bench seat.

No. But I did some more cleaning on it. I have another #1 fuel injector leak I gotta fix first. It is washing the whole side of the motor with diesel. I have a new injector pipe on the way. Everything else is new so it has to be the pipe.

In other news this is happening:

Snip... I made two low profile housings, one for each T-case.

I’m almost to this point myself, can you share more detail on the shift linkage you made?  Pics or drawings?
