It rubs on the case?

No It doesn't seem to be rubbing on the case. But I cant seem to get any thrust lash on it. Maybe a prybar is called for to get it to shift a little. the timing idler gear has a heavy duty clock spring in it to eliminate any gear lash. maybe I just need to overcome the clock spring with force.

How would they expect it to change just by taking it apart and putting it back together?  Weird.

Haha! No. I was at king of the hammers all last week. I think that’s a pretty good excuse.

I was feeling inspired by H8PVMNT and worked on my engine outside in the snow last night. It was only a dusting of snow but it is all we get around Seattle.

Only thing left on the bottom end is the oil pan, and since it is currently an oily mess I am avoiding it and moving on to the alternator. I had been having charging issues so I pulled the alternator apart and installed a new front and rear bearing as well as a new regulator and rectifier. I am using all genuine parts and also pulled out the coil and put a fresh coat of insulation on it. I inspected the brushes and the shaft dimension; both have plenty of life left in them and are barely worn. Using an Ohmmeter I checked continuity. Should be good to go as soon as the new rear bearing shows up. I will then reseal the vacuum pump and power steering pump which I have already cleaned up.

looking good man!
were did you find the bearing, regulator and rectifier? Are you improving the alternator or just replacing with equivalent stock parts?

I can’t remember where I have found all of the parts. Some of them have had to be ordered from lands far away. Others can be ordered through my local dealership because they are used in other engines. Right now I am just making it stock. I’ve looked for upgraded components but haven’t been able to find much. As far as increasing the output of this alternator, thats beyond my ability.

Thx for the response. Iirc the certified and regulator can upgrade your alternator to a point.  Or so I have read, I mean you can’t take a 60amp and turn it into a 300amp monster, but I thought I saw parts to upgrade to 80-100amp with new parts.
So, yes you are quite capable.

Interesting. It is 70 amp right now. So once I get this one working right I might dig into the second one I have to see if I can bump up the output.

I’ll try to find the alternator rebuild parts sight I found a while back. I was looking at swapping my alternator out for a hiace since the vans came with 110amp units.

Doing a little research, it looks like the hi end G spec HiAce had a 110amp alternator with an option for a 120 amp alternator.
These VIN’s:
KZH110G-GPDT
KZH116G-GHPDT
KZH120G-HHPET
KZH120G-HHPNT
KZH132V-EFPDT
KZH138V-EFPDT

110 amp alternator part #27060-67050 I can’t find a part number for the 120 amp model.

Try these guys
https://alternatorstarterrebuildkits.com/
No experience with them but they’ve got a video and reasonable kits.
And they are changing out the windings, I was wrong earlier.
But I think for the price of a hiace alt I’d have a good spare while I rebuild the 110amp. Just sayin.

Today I bought a 130amp unit from a place in Van Nuys through eBay and paid a decent price considering what I paid for the 60amp unit at NoHo auto parts 3 years ago that still works just fine but, it is only a 60 and is coming out of my rig.

So searching Toyodiy and found a 130A for the KDH201 Hiace 1KD....new partsouq.com list $662. Or a Denso on Ebay for $156 USD...

For the 1KZ, I'd search through the different Hiace models since they have varying levels of trim.  Most of the 1KD's (serpentine system) I have seen all mount the alternator in the same spot/bracket, not sure about the 1KZ, which is why I was looking at the Hicace as an alternate.  I briefly looked for a 1KZ powered Hiace, but i couldn't find the model on toyodiy

This engine is confusing me at the moment. I see the injection pump has a gear but also a bearing. Then it has a toothed pulley on the outside of the case. What are the purposes of the pulley and gear together? Also in the pictures on previous page, I see the balance shafts and gears that drive them. It being and ohc engine does the toothed pulley drive the cam shaft?

^^^ Not sure i understand, but maybe the OP will chime in... The IP has a timing belt that runs to the cam shaft, so it needs to be a toothed belt.

OP...
Try also to cross reference the Toyota OEM number with the Denso one, i use their website for Europe or Aussie land. I found more options online for the alternator using the Denso part number....hope that helps

That’s right the toothed pulley drives the camshaft via a timing belt. It is being driven by the timing gear.

So if the timing belt takes a turd you ruin the pistons/valves, possibly head and block ???

Geez, finding a different alternator for the 1kz is difficult. The years for the 1KZ in a Hiace are few, and the part number is hard to find a cross reference for also. I'll keep looking, but I wonder if it just has a different pulley than the 1KD model?

EDIT.... Stupid side note, the Ambulance Hiace (3rd Gen) was available with the 1UZ.

Yeah if the belt goes the engine is a boat anchor. That is why Toyota encourage changing it every 60,000 miles. It's a cheap and quick job.

The part number I listed was for the Hiace 1KZ 110 amp alternator. It was a 1998.

110 amp alternator part #27060-67050 I can’t find a part number for the 120 amp model.

Alright, I am not having much success trying cross reference part numbers.
I did find the 120A number: 27060-67160 and Alternator A2283 LRA02283 LRA2283 102211-0710 27060-67160 1022110710 2706067160
Those popped up on amazon at 220pounds. Maybe try searching those numbers  also.

Link:
Denso Global Sites at the bottom of the page:
https://www.denso.com/global/en/products-and-services/automotive-service-parts-and-accessories/

Denso US site, use the find part button and then the cross reference function
http://densoautoparts.com/alternators.aspx

So, I think the issue is that the Hiace 1KZ was only offered in Japan, or at least it appears this way to me making the allusive OEM high-output alternator difficult to locate.

Hope this helps,

I just remembered, that there are marinized versions of these engines in the states. Nanni-Diesel used to make a 1kz based marinized engine you may be able to find a boat shop that is a dealer for nanni-diesel, I know I have one about 50miles from me in Annapolis. If nothing else they may be able to provide another part number to cross reference.

Found a discussion on this site to try to find the name of the 1KZ based engine, I think it comes with a 100A alternator.
