What pyro are you going to run?

It's a PLX I also have a vac/boost, AFR wideband, intake temp, oil pressure and coolant temp sending units that I'm feeding to the multigauge display unit.

This weekend was spent cleaning and painting all the last of the engine parts so they can go on. I also had to Tig weld some mounting bosses  for the turbo heat shield to mount to. After breaking a tap I eventually got that done. At the end of the day on Sunday I bolted a few small parts onto the motor

The Turbo oil supply line had been giving me trouble it's in an impossible place to get to and I had screwed up the copper gasket and was waiting for the replacement to arrive. This week it showed-up and I promised myself to get it together this weekend if it was the only thing I did on my truck. I only had Sunday off work this weekend so I spent a couple hours working on it. I just couldn't get a wrench on the banjo bolt so I had to modify one. I also attached a picture of my shop which as you can see is massive. Anyways I finally got it bolted up.

Yesterday I made some EGR block off plates. I had a big 1-1/2" thick chunk of aluminum so I cut a block out of it then cut a 3/4" thick slice and a 3/8" slice from that block then cut them to shape and sanded them to dimension on the belt sander. Lastly, I have a ceramic tile with a sheet of 220 grit glued to it that I use for surfacing. That got it pretty flat so that they would seal. I also bolted the intake and air conditioning pump on. starting to look pretty complete. I was thinking that I might fire it off today but I can't find my water pump pulley :smack: I ordered one on Ebay. So when it gets here in November I should be good to go.

That's called diesel knock. It means my timing needs to be adjusted. My dad's Yanmar tractor always sounds like that. My oil pressure gauge wasn't giving me a reading so to make sure I had oil pressure zippo and I ran to O'reilly's to get a mechanical oil pressure gauge. It was putting out between 40 and 50 psi. I'm hoping that when I hook up the intake constrictor control the ECU will sense it and adjust the timing.

Well, yesterday I hooked up the intake constrictor control. It made no noticeable improvement on the timing. So next step is to take the front cover off and see if I somehow installed one of the timing gears a tooth off.  :smack:

Yesterday I spent some time diagnosing the poor running problem. I made sure that the vacuum pump was building good vacuum so it could properly operate the VSV's, which it was so I then checked if the turbo was building boost, it also was working properly. I decided that just to be sure that there weren't any codes stored in the ECU I should put it in Diagnostic mode and check the memory. This is where things get strange. When the key is first turned to the on position the Check Engine Light should be illuminated and should typically stay illuminated until the engine is started. When the ECU is in diagnostic mode it should do the same for a few seconds and then proceed to flash any codes that are stored in memory. My Check Engine Light never came on in either normal or diagnostic mode. I put an LED bulb in place of the incandescent bulb years ago, so I know it isn't burned out. first thing I checked were that the engine and subsequently the sensors all had a good ground. Yes. then I checked that the ECU grounds were all in good working order, which I was unable to complete because I had to leave. So that's where I'm at. Hopefully it's nothing major. This is why a mechanical pump would be so nice. No electronics to troubleshoot. I had to leave town yet again so it'll be another week till I can finish troubleshooting the ECU grounds.

I know it sounds silly, but what about removing that bulb and testing it or replace it with an incandescent just to see if the circuit works?

Just a couple thoughts...

Have you cleaned your battery terminals and clamps? Have you checked the voltage the alternator is putting out?

I would disconnect the battery for an hour and let the ECU reset.

Also, I believe the CEL can come on and go off if it does not detect a major voltage change from the sensors. If there is a detectable drop in voltage, then you can check for codes and go from there.

Gnarls. :blah:

I know a guy in Portland who just finished a swap into a second gen 4runner. He used one of their mechanical pumps. He really likes it. Steve has a 3L mechanical pump. I think it might be the same pump body as the one used on the 1KZ-t that came from the factory with a mechanical pump. I would just need to have ot tuned for the 1KZ. Trying to find a cheaper way to get a mech pump on this thing.

I haven't checked the power yet but when i was checking the grounds i was using an ohmeter checking for continuity.

I highly recommend testing using a voltage drop. A continuity tests will pass when a voltage drop will fail and show You the problem.
