4Runner Update:

Just finished installing a TRD elocker on the rear axle over the weekend. I did everything with the axle still underneath the rig. Not the safest thing to do, next time I might just remove the whole axle from under the rig instead of crawling underneath to weld and grind.
Very happy to have this installed and working properly. Next projects for the 4runner are sliders and a marlin clutch. Then I will start gathering parts for the SAS.

Here is the cost:
TRD elocker: $550
Skys Offroad electric locker guard: $39 + shipping
Long Range Offroad wiring harness: $180 + shipping
Total: $769 + shipping

Running a selectable locker: PRICELESS

The axles seem to be holding up well, I was running 38's for 2ish years before the 40s and didn't break anything during that time. I have broke a few things on the 40s but I don't know if I can solely blame them.

I keep the ARB diffs open all the time unless they are needed, I'm switching them on and off continuously throughout trails to keep unnecessary strain off my drive train.

I have blown my stock trunnion bearings, but I was riding the truck harddd. Either way, I'd recommend the eliminators or marlins 25mm before going to 40s.
Also have broken one 30spline OG longfield and a stock rear axle shaft on another trip, again I was riding the truck hard lol guess the carnage is adding up.

However, for what I continuously put the truck through i feel it is holding up very well. I have buddy's on 35-37s that break somethings every trip out :headscratch:

Randy here,
Your truck looked incredible at the springs.I'm impressed that you run 40's too big for me.My wife and I were in the willies jeep right next to care keepers place,it's really a 1980 short bed, with all yotobrunning gear.

We were surprised with all the trail carnage that rolled into camp,it was are first event and we had a blast, look forward to anotherone soon.

Thanks to all the great people there that made arevfirst event so fun!!

I love those 40s lol I ran them for a weekend about a month ago now, I have pics I just need to upload them and photobucket is so slow. They hooked up every where and seemed to walk up everything lol. Got them wet a few times and didn't seem to phase them lol. I'm running a spool rear and Detroit up front so steering was about impossible. Now that I have hydro I think I could steere them with ease. I was able to turn one handed on rocks last weekend with the 39.5 iroks. My axles are built though with 30 splines, trunnion bearing eliminator, chromo hub gears, and ARP studs on the hubs and top and bottoms of both knuckles lol. It all felt pretty strong on the 40s I was just scared about ring and pinions lol. I want to go back down to 37s either MTRS or the Treps. Those are true 40s and they are bigggg. Having selectable lockers would be a real nice piece of mind too lol. I had to unlock my front hubs so I could make it onto the bridge at Barrett Lake cause it's such a tight corner and I couldn't steer for anything lol

Oh and I feel like I broke way more on 35s too lol I think I thought "I'm on 35s these won't break anything" then pow pow everything comes apart haha. I've yet to break anything axle related because of the 40s and that surprises me lol

Hey Randy, thanks for the kind words! I was surprised by all the carnage this year too lol this year was my 5th MCR event and by far saw a lot more breaks than previous years. Not sure what happened  :dunno: As always though, everyone seemed very eager to lend those a helping hand  :driving:

Yeah I've been very happy with the MTRs, i like them more than the KM2s. Running a selectable locker, especially up front has been one of the best upgrades I've made. Makes offroading so much more enjoyable. I'm still running just the stock toyota PS pump with a radiator added to it. Steering hasn't been an issue for me since. I remember back when i had 35s with grizzly locker front and back the steering was a hassle! The pump would run hot and whine. Now on 40s and a selectable front, no problems! lol

After wheeling with selectable lockers front and rear ill never go back. I got both my lockers for $600 and sold my old thirds that were locked for $450 so it wasn't very expensive for me. There not quite as nice as arb lockers because they dont lock and unlock as fast but there defiantly better than no lockers or auto lockers in my opinion at least for the front. Its nice not putting stress on things that dont need it.

As far as daily drivers, with manual hubs, the rear is the only one you really need to have a locking differential. I got an ARB in the rear, and it's the best thing I've ever done. For my front axle, I'm thinking either the TrueTrac, or a lunchbox style locker... Depends on the money I suppose... If I have the cash, I'm going to try to get an ARB in the front too... Having full control of a locker is better than I could have ever imagined..

Just read through your entire thread mate. Great build. You must really know how to build and wheel as you have hardly had a breakage on some pretty tough tracks. I like the proportions on the bob too. I'm looking at bobbing my new tub and the 7" you took out looks spot on.

Looked through your thread again, can't find what leafs you've got in the front.. are they ruf?
